New Social Features: A Community Effort

We're very used to matchmaking features in games to bring people together. However, we're not often trying to think outside the box to come up with new ideas to serve that same function. People are complaining about the lack of matchmaking, but in reality they are complaining about the lack of social features that work toward bringing people together. We need social features to help drive proper communication and camaraderie. What's most important is not reducing the randomness of the people we meet, but creating a temptation for us to want to communicate with strangers. Meeting new people shouldn't be taboo! Meeting new people is inevitable, and so we should be working to let these people be social together and foster community rather than finding ways of fooling ourselves into thinking reaching out to Reddit or Clans will mean we meet people who we completely know and trust. Instead we should try to foster social communications with the strangers we meet within the game. So let's hear all of your ideas. What new feature can we create to bring people together? Maybe you'd just improve upon an existing feature? We have clans, we have groups, and yet much of that is still very external (i.e. They're not in the game). *** The key here is that the feature MUST be within the game. Anything that takes us out of the game out of necessity (rather than being something optional like the Companion App) is a major inconvenience for players. *** Edit: The following have already been suggested (but you can feel free to improve upon them if you wish). 2nd Edit: I've expanded the suggestions list, going into more detail and providing credit to those who suggested it (click their name for a direct link to their reply). For a TL;DR just read the dashed portions of each suggestion. Suggested by The Gamer, Khorick, Tanmeister69, Folchinator, NEWNS, RaunchyRam, NineBreaker, and AaOo: - Text chat, voice chat, proximity chat, Companion app chat ... chat is the most suggested feature so far. Pressing the assigned button will switch Fireteam chat with Proximity chat (i.e. It will swap what your primary chat option is and dictate who you can listen and talk to). Holding the assigned button will let you listen to your secondary chat option without swapping. 2. Have an option to be able to disable Proximity chat. *expanded by DanielKBoom and DawnBlue: 1. You could gear-check/inspect players right within the bulletin board or menu 2. You could queue up with specified intent (e.g. I want to be the sniper, and I want to do achievements at the same time). This includes all necessary traits such as difficulty and mission. 3. There were polls or quiz systems in response to queues (e.g. "Would you be comfortable talking with us on mics?" or "Would you be comfortable playing the sniper & doing achievements?") Make it a mercenary board where you can pay players to raid with you. - A preset checklist/filter you could mark to help the game phase you with players of the same personality at the Tower (e.g. "I prefer meeting people who are playing Crucible matches right now" or "I can't use a mic at this time") - An -optional- rating system where you can rate fellow Guardians on Friendliness, Cooperation, and other positive factors (with the impact of the rating varying depending on play circumstances. e.g. someone who invites you for 5 minutes and then rates you low will have less meaning then if someone does a whole raid with you and felt your cooperation was 'meh'). - A feature where you can string together preset text or phrases like in Dark Souls. Preferably these messages would go to a player directly, or would be placed on a message board in the Tower as a type of 'queue-up' feature. Either this will be natural as in hanging around an NPC who gives rewards for a specific Raid, or artificially created as in hanging around well-known sites around the Tower. - Phase players so that when you enter a specific wing in the Tower you will only meet people who are on the same missions and strikes as you. This wing, or lounge, would allow players to gear-check and communicate before creating a team. Suggested by ShadowKnightMDH: - Be able to search for Fireteams and Raid teams in orbit, while also allowing you to talk to them. This idea came from someone on a seperate thread about matchmaking in Raids. I thought it was an great idea that is already in existance most notably from my experiences SWTOR. Add a group finder or "Find a Fireteam" The way I see this in Destiny is that it will group you up with randoms and start you in the tower. You will start in the tower for a couple of key reasons; 1. Insure all players are outfitted and prepared for action 2. Introduce the fireteam to each other to insure proper comunication. When searching for a fireteam you can chose 3 catagories; 1. Mission/explore 2. Crucible 3. Raid. This will insure the randoms you are grouped with will have a similar goal in mind as well as insuring the proper size fireteam.

    • Clans need to be supported in-game. You should be able to see who's online in your clan, and invite them from such an interface. There should be some way for high ranking clan members to send communications to the clan (even if it has to be through a keyboard). There should be clan chat channels. People should be able to join and leave clans through in-game methods. There should also be more general in-game communication methods. Maybe something like a "looking for group" interface where you can specify the type of content you're looking for, and some info about yourself. And other people can browse it and inspect people before messaging/inviting.

      • There's plenty of ways to do this stuff in-game. Put "I'm looking for..." icons next to your username. But there's a better way, that doesn't require a single change of code. By consensus, certain parts of the tower are where you meet people who want to play certain game types. Want to find a PvE team? Stick around the hanger. Looking for a Raid party? Stick around the upper deck. Etc, etc. The nice thing about social games is that they can self-organize. Heck, in real life big cities, people know which street corners to hang out at to find a ride into town. The driver gets to use HOV lanes, the passenger gets a free ride. Same idea. If it works well, people who are in the right location and dancing are looking for invites. People sitting have a group. Heck, maybe just pointing will become the "join up?" question. Point back and you'll get an invite to the fireteam.

Better in-game communication I would say. (lol "better" isn't even the right word....give us at least ONE option to communicate in-game without doing gestures with our characters).

Pair up two fire teams. If you have a 3 man team, have the option to join another group. It's the halfway point between traditional matchmaking, and the current option. I explained it in this post http://www.bungie.net/en/Forum/Post?id=67170274 This one does a better job http://www.bungie.net/en/Forum/Post?id=67168788

Proximity chat in the tower would be nice. Heck, simply the ability to seamlessly "party up" and chat with other players without having to add them to your friends list would be enough. But I'd like to see Bungie go a step further and make a lobby system for people looking for group. You could host a closed or open join lobby, and players could pop in, chat, check out eachother's profiles, and decide where to go from there.} EDIT: Forgot to mention, thank you for making this post, I hope we can keep discussions like this alive and visible for Bungie.

              • My back up idea is a bulletin board in the tower. It could be like a mini-forum at the post office. Steps: Post office -> bulletin board -> category, e.g. Raids -> select "Create Fireteam" or request to join a player who has already done it. If another player requests to join you, you can accept, or decline via a notification like the ones we already see for invites. Canceling your post, or leaving your team could be the same as normally leaving a fireteam. You could also have categories for strikes, crucible, clans, and other social functions.

I would like to see larger and longer public events. Maybe events that require x amount of guardians to complete.or planet wide assaults by the darkness causing alot guardians to work together. Edit During these events there should be full com's between gatdians. Then allowing them to branch off into groups afterwards.

                  • how about proximity chat? so you know... you can actually socialize in the social hub, of the game based around trying to make things more social.

Better yet just add a feature to the D-pad that allows you to ask for help. Like a for example down is to lay down so I'm suggesting add an option that allows you to select a few pre written texts like. Hold LT = Left Trigger D-Pad in any direction "Searching for PvP players" Left "Searching for Raid players" Right "Searching for Strike players" Up "Searching for Story mode players" Down Like lets say they add a more complex interface that allows you to dive deeper into the D-pad pre programmed sets ups. Hope you get what I'm saying. It's easier to elaborate via speaking lol (=^ェ^=)

                    • I'm still confused why the most common communication features to every mmo-style game was completely excluded from this game. It's just like Uplay and whatever that horrible garbage EA does. It's the companies way of forcing you to use some service they came up with out of game.

                    • A irc based chat on the site would be helpful or even better in the companion app. It's irc so it's very simple to use and almost no effort to implement it. Or a in game text based chat so we can type "LFG (Looking For Group) for raids". Or maybe a text box above our heads that we can turn off or on that says LFG or let you put any text on it. Or join a clan.

                      • Larger parties. Groups of 3 or 6 is hardly a social game. We need the ability to interact with large groups of people in game. Single digits is not social. Double digits is fine. Triple digit clans and alliances would be awesome if their was actually a purpose or reason to have such a large group.

Chat. It's the fix. No match making for raids fine. Calling Destiny an action FPS/RPG whatever fine. No way to say hello want to do x?, while in game is very odd. Just saying.

Matchmaking is all I got right now. Though I haven't seen any "valid arguments" against the inclusion of matchmaking. There's a reason why it's implemented into virtually all online multiplayers: because it works. Why would it not work in Destiny? Would it somehow dilute the experience? If so, why?

                        • instead of matchmaking they should add a list of everyone thats in your clan showing you how who is on so you can invite them to the raid.

                          • These are just examples of locations, not necessarily the best idea If you want a Fireteam for Explore then sit in the "big well bowl thing" over by the Speaker. If you want a Fireteam for Story then sit in the Lounge down the stairs from the Dead Orbit leader. If you want a Fireteam for Strikes then sit down by the Vanguard Quarter Master If you want a Fireteam for the Crucible then sit by the Crucible Quarter Master If you want a Fireteam for a Raid, then sit in front of the Iron Banner doors. Different ways of doing this will be in different social areas. Then you see who is available and start checking their bungie.net/psn/xbl profiles or send random invites. IMO This is the kind of work around we ought to do. Ultimately I think things like this will happen once critical mass at max level is achieved and the game is out for a few weeks.

                          • First of all GAME CHAT! Bungie had game chat in all of the halo games so why stop now?!Communication is extremely important in destiny, even more important than it is in Halo, and its something the game lacks so much of. Also, i think it would be cool if they added a unique chat system in free roam where you can hear other players more the closer you are to them, and less, the further you are away from them. Just like the chat system in dayz.
