Option to remove Drift Guard

Upon playing the Beta and having a party every day, there were very little issues I actually cared about besides this one. For those who are unaware what drift guard is, it is essentially very slight movements on the thumbsticks being negated from having any input. Now. The problem with Destiny is that the drift guard is relatively high and aiming down the sights feels like there is a massive deadzone in the controller in which no precise movements can be made. You may have probably noticed when trying to slightly adjust from the recoil of fast firing weapons that precision inputs have no affect on your aim. What that means is that you can't make any small adjustments to your thumbsticks and honestly makes the game harder to play for everybody. Anybody have that old trusty controller that spins/moves slightly when you're not touching it? That's what drift guard prevents, but it also negates controller input if it doesn't cross a certain threshold. This makes it harder to aim and move as desired since it feels so high in the game. I'm not saying remove it from the game entirely since it does not bother most people, but I can vouch for I think many players when I say that there should be the option to remove this drift guard. Titanfall has this setup and the option works well for people who want it and people who don't. I'd rather not see posts saying "get over it", because this is beneficial for players who wish to be more accurate since the drift guard is so high in Destiny and it does not hinder other players in any way by adding in the option to remove it. Drift guard makes close range battles difficult to react in quickly and precise distant shots harder to accomplish both in PvE and PvP. I am aware that this game is not intended to be super competitive, but this is a concern for the entire game, mainly for those who do not want restrictions on their skills. The game will be played as it did in the Beta, but with an added option that gives players the option to be more accurate at the risk of overcompensating with their aim. Just to be clear, this is requesting the OPTION to remove drift guard in controller/sensitivity options. This is NOT a request to remove aim-assist that all FPS have, just the ability to move and look more freely.

  • I definitely agree. As it stands in Destiny, it is incredibly difficult to make micro-adjustments while firing at something and it's enraging. I've played shooters on the PC for the past 4 years and I had no clue what drift guard was until I watched your video, I just thought it was a mechanic of the controller. They should definitely give us the choice of adjusting how much drift guard we want.

  • I can agree a feature like this would be nice, but the drift guard adjustments is a feature that effects game balance. For one, Titanfall is a highly competitive game. It was designed that way from the beginning. It only has PVP... They actually went so far as getting together with Microsoft and having controller updates just for this game. The drift option may have been part of this to allow access. Destiny on the other hand is not a highly competitive shooter, and was not intended as such. It was designed as a FPS/RPG with a dash of MMO. I feel the game is designed to go adventuring and exploring and saving the galaxy! Also I don't think the game is so grounded in to reality like Titanfall. It's not ment to be super precise. It's meant to be a well rounded fun game to play. While a feature as that would be nice, it would take time to implement. As I've said, it "will" effect game balance, and would take a lot of time to rebalance the game. Maybe something like this can be later introduced into the game threw a patch, but only time will tell. Good luck on your endeavor! ;)

i totally agree with this. I doubt Bungie will implement it though because it could turn destiny pvp, and potentially pve, into a certain experience they don't want in their game. I think most of us can agree that when there is no drift guard, aiming is extremely easy when its that responsive, and that could take away from the experience destiny is trying create. If anything i hope they tone down that dead zone because i definitely noticed how hard it was to aim in pvp when i really wanted to be precise but ended up over compensating with my aim everytime i tried to get back on target. I get that it makes the game more challenging that way, but in my opinion its a steep learning curve, and its an extremely frustrating process.

    • The issue here is that the game is supposed to be hard, thus more competitive. We, bungie/halo fans, want it to be more like halo but not so much that it is halo. Just the competitiveness. We don't want another crap CoD, or a project 1 Titan Fall. We want Destiny and bungie has made fantastic competitive games in the past. But now that bungie has moved on from halo and onto Destiny, we all as fans must trust Bungie to do as they always have and create yet another hard, competitive, skillful game like they always have. Trust in bungie my friend. In time you will figure out if Destiny is or isn't your game.

      • I do agree with you on that, but if we get to turn the aim assist off, and add in drift settings, we're really just running CoD:In Space. If anything the kill time needs to be increased a little so it gives skilled players a chance to turn round and kill the guy that's shooting you in the back (bungie y u make medal for dis insulting move) I think it's fine leaving it as is. It makes it feel like a different game, rather than a DLC for a shooter. I didn't have any problems getting headshots in crucible, shingen be locked on to dem heads bro

Agreed. I wasnt even aware what this was called. I remember KZ2 being very bad at this at launch, huge deadzone. And coversely I loved the PS3 version of BF BC2, because it seemed to have no drift guard. While the 360 version seemed like it did. I just attributed it to different sticks. until BF3 came out, and then the ps3 version felt just like the 360 version, iirc. Please Bungie, give us the option, or remove it. It just shouldnt be in any game imo.

            • Would absolutely love to see this option implemented, as well as a few others such as: An option to turn off the ADS "snap" An option for crouch toggle/hold An option for sensitivity of X-axis versus Y-axis An option for sensitivity of ADS versus hip-fire An option for mapping vehicular controls separately from combat controls An option for fully remapping the controller layouts to your liking Maybe even an option for ADS toggle if there's anyone who might like that type of feel

            • My Xbox360 controller walks slightly to the left and it was bothering me mostly because you have to stand still to do the emote like sitting or pointing. I'm not sure if the drift guard applies strictly to the right thumbtack, I guess that would make more sense, but since my right stick is in good shape I never really noticed any problems with aiming, only walking left when I wanted to stand still.

            • I completely missed looking to see if "drift guard" in the settings had an option to pick it's level or even turn it off. I'm not gonna lie. I greatly appreciate the fact that some developers are implementing this feature into games to give us the choice. Bungie already made it so while you level up your X1 character, you can go turn in your 360 and play Destiny with friends you have that couldn't afford an X1. They didn't have to do this, the fact they DID shows GREAT consideration on their part which for me and my friends did not go unnoticed. I used a Razor Sabertooth Elite controller for the Beta on my 360 and X1. http://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/B00B1MXGDO/ref=mp_s_a_1_1?qid=1406817168&sr=8-1&pi=SY200_QL40# Razor controllers have an unfortunately short lifespan when it comes to ghosting on the analogs (especially their right analog due to SO MANY GAMES requiring the right analog button as a melee attack). The slight ghosting on both my razor Sabertooth controllers is on the right analog and the drift guard prevents it from happening. So I'm extremely greatful for another feature Bungie was considerate enough to give us. But for those who don't have analog ghosting I agree the "Drift guard" should be an optional setting to turn off and on in the game. ** note: Don't ask "how" I'm able to use my 360 controllers on my X1. I hate rechargeable controllers, especially the new X1 controllers and I'm not going to be forced to use controllers I don't like if I can help it. Microsoft should have given consumers an option to use controllers they already own, instead of being greedy and forcing them to spend money on controllers that in my opinion were designed poorly**
