Why do I suck so bad at Destiny PVP?

Alright prokillers, here's your chance to school somebody who will actually appreciate it. Quick backstory; Last time I played an FPS in PVP was when Marathon was hot property, so some of my problems may just be because I'm really rusty. Anyway, what's the deal with PVP in Destiny? I feel like I'm just doing it all wrong...every time I blink somebody gets me with a one-shot kill and it doesn't seem to matter much what weapon they're using, or what I'm trying to do to stay alive. None of my weapons feel anywhere near as powerful as what the other team is using. Honestly I really want to like the Destiny PvP experience, because I've got a sentimental attachment to Bungie and this game is lots of fun for me in PvE. So help me out. How do I get the most out of this game? I've got military experience (which basically boils down to having a great deal of training in following instructions) and lots of time to kill once the game ships (retired), so if you folks can boil this particular PvP system down to some basic tactical and strategic elements I'll be able to pick up on it and have fun with it, but right now I'm feeling pretty worn down after having the brakes beat off me repeatedly in the beta. Thanks in advance for your thoughts (and for the inevitable insults from the kids table). p.s. Don't think I'm blaming the game...obviously people are winning at PvP, so the system works...I just down understand how it works yet, so I'm not one of them.

  • Same here sometimes I can be extremely good sometimes can be extremely horrible.. I tried to pairing the right gear and the right weapon but still... specially when I run a 6v6 with my friends I am always at the bottom list. I am so frustrated. I watch videos how people do sniping and all .. but everytime I kill them left them very low health they survive but I've got killed by them... tried to use the best weapon too with good perks .. oh well I feel u maybe all we need is to play more or practice more and use the weapon that we comfortable with.. I don't like shot gun but shotgun is easy to use than sniper. I am trying to use sniper more in pvp.

  • Forgot to mention, auto rifles seem to be the best for pvp so try and use those and work your way up. Just make sure the auto has good stability or its practically useless. Like I said get the righteous 7 since its easy to get and a good replacement for the Monte.

  • It mostly boils down to what gun you are using and reflexes. I use a year 2 Monte Carlo or my righteous 7 for its upgraded stability. I recommend you get a righteous 7 since you can get it from high monarchy for 150 marks and learn to use that. Make sure your scope is pointed at there head even if the reticle isn't on them because that gives you a better chance of getting a headshot and let the gun do all the work. It took me about 2 days to learn with my Monte so I'm sure you'll learn quickly. Now I always manage to get 1st if not second place even if I go negative. And don't get worked up over dying because in my case iit makes me do worse. And don't use blink. Never use blink.

  • Same same. I primarily use a Hunter but am thinking my Titan may be better suited for me in PVP. just seem to get better all round results and seems to compliment my playing style for the arena. Ofcourse I could have just got lucky the few times I was playing it the Titan!

    • I have never played a PVP, or shooter, ever until destiny. I really love this game but get KILLED in pvp. My best mission for shooting I got 77 headshots out of 120 kills. I'm usually middle and sometimes top in strikes, which i love and do primarily. I want to enjoy the entire game but I'm lucky if i get ONE kill in pvp! And spend most my time dead :( I like to blame it on being a girl... who is playing a shooter for the time. I haven't even attempted in in a while so now maybe with two characters over 300 light level I'll give it a shot once again.....

      • Keep working at it. It took me awhile to be good enough to jump into trials. I still have a long way to go but I know with practice I'll get better. Do the same bud.

      • PvP in destiny isn't like cod. Or battlefield. Their is a "tempo" of each game type... Clash I would recommend (team death match) for starting... Stick with your teammates go max armor with your class titan or warlock preferred. And just practice precision shots. I will not say I'm the best but I have bad games but I also consistently get top 3 or 1 and it is a very "grindy" type of game. And same goes for getting good. Or decent. Just play... Hence why my kd isn't the greatest I suicide a lot with blink and with the boosting a lot lol I have over 800 on my warlock! Last tip play with a fire team.. DSG Allure is my gamer tag if you wanna play crucible on Xbox one.

        • Best to watch Youtube. True Vanguard has some good pvp tutorials on all classes and aspects of the game. Playing is the only way to improve though... Its all reaction times and getting the drop on someone.

        • This isnt to the author but to people wanting tips, snipers, scouts and shotguns. Getting used to snipers in pvp will trash your kd, but youll make it up when you can quickscope head shots. Stay on outskirts of the maps. With smaller maps use shotguns and autos. Medium to big maps ar scouts and snipers. Good choices- Primary: MIDA, Universal Remote, last extremety, grasp of malok, the last word, red death, hawkmoon, shadow price, doctrine of passing, and hakkons hatchet. Secondaries- 1000 k stare, longbow, lord of wolves, conspiracy theory d, party crasher, ldr, stillpiercer, and if you can rock it, queenbreakers and ironwreath. Heavies- Quillims Terminus, truth, boltcaster, dark drinker, any rocket with grenades and horseshoes or tracking, etc etc etc. Choose weapons based on maps, you best judgement is probably correct. If its objective, kill people trying to do the objective. Oh and every single subclass has superb potential, dont be afraid to mix things up. Last but not least, practice and hit those headshots. 💘 you guys, and keep it fun.

You are not alone. I've been playing Destiny intensively for 4 months now and I still pepper someone in the crucible and get killed by one or two shots from them. I'm 290 light with good armour rating. Sticking next to a team mate is fine but when you, or he, gets killed and re-spawn at some remote location, that's when you are a vulnerable lone target trying to get back into the fray. I've lost count of how many times I've been killed doing this. I'm now getting more success rushing in with a top end shot gun than standing off with a rifle, but my efforts still get me between 1 kill bad day and 12 kills good day results. Anyway, back to the one or two shot kill, I have an observation. Is it possible for someone to lower their light to 180 to get into lower level matchmaking, then raise their light back up to, say 295 with kick ass gear whilst in a crucible match. Could this explain the one or two shot kill with a scout rifle scenario ? Whatever the case, it seems there are many guys out there who can make their crosshairs stick to your head like hair gel, wish I could do it.

          • I'm in the same boat as you, my man. Although, I have my good days and I have my bad days. The other day I got 23 kills in one IB match and got like a 1.9 kd, but most of the time I get pretty close to .6 to .8 with maybe 11 or 12 kills. I used to be much worse, but one day I decided to try and grind out the thorn bounty kills and surprisingly, the more I played, the better I got until I finally managed to do it. Practice makes perfect, at least that's been the apparent idea for me.

            • Don't rush too hard, I know it's hard to do but try and stick with a few teammates, get to know the maps and all the lanes/ kill zones, and look at the radar, if you see a hint of red stop sprinting and be on high alert.

              • I know it's been along time since you posted this, but from one sucky player to another: play control, stay with the group! You will start getting assists and it gives the enemy someone else to shoot at besides you. Once you learn your best weapons, mine are Suros Regime, fusion rifle and gallyhorn, you will start getting more kills then assists and soon ( months) lol you'll be holding your own.

              • You're not doing anything wrong. It's a crap PvP game, sad to say. Sad to say considering Bungie made Halo, which was one of the best and my favorite competitive shooters ever. Destiny just isn't a PvP game. Weapons will never be truly balanced. Subclasses with basically unlimited grenades and insta-kill abilities. Too many small maps that don't allow diversity in weapon choice (although I still stubbornly snipe and use a scout). It's overall just a bad experience. You can outplay people all you want. All they have to do though is force CQC and shoot you with a shotgun for a one hit kill at an exceptionally long range, or use something like a super. Miss the halo days. Fair fight, ammo and grenade count that had to be monitored, well made maps that catered to all play styles, and people who could outplay and outsmart would always come out on top. I used to be able to burst fire the AR so well that I was getting consistent kills at mid range lol. Now I can do the same with any AR.. Cuz there's no bloom when you are able to ADS..

                  • Mate, this is me. I'm so bad it's not even funny. I bumble around Crucible basically being the gift that never stops giving for people who take me down with one shot; find me there and enjoy your endless levelling up. I started playing same time as another newbie who asked if I wanted to team up with him. 2 days after starting I'm on Level 7 and he's on 13 or something. He's probably about 9 years old. I'm still struggling with fighting off those endless waves of fallen at the last array. Other people smash that out in a heartbeat and I'm running about like a headless chicken getting my arse handed to me on a plate. I've taken to hiding in a little nook above some video screens just to get my health back. I think the comment a few made about having fun is something worth remembering (and much appreciated it); I'm all tense, just like I was when I used to play Marathon, Doom etc. (I'm 43...) and it's no good. They're right - Nobody cares. It's better to just get in among those low life and shoot anything that moves. The only way I'm ever going to get more accurate and figure all this out is by putting in a shift.... Anyway, the question opened up a thread which had plenty of info in it, so thanks...
