Make Hand Cannons a Special Weapon

The notion of High Risk/High Reward is very much a special weapon characteristic. The sniper rifle has almost no use at close range, the shotgun has next to no range and the fusion rifle has a delay/charge time for every shot. Why not make a gun with limited clip size that specializes in headshots into a special weapon instead of a primary weapon? IMO it'll encourage people to actually use it.

  • I would like the hand cannon in the special weapon slot. I would use it as more as a secondary side-arm, though. I would switch to it when I ran out of rounds in my scout rifle so I could keep putting down enemies and not have to stop to reload. This isn't really the point of the special weapon, I know, but the hand cannon just isn't as versatile as the other primaries. There's no reason for me to use it over the scout/pulse/auto rifle.

  • So that leaves just rifles for primary. Wow, this'll be a fun game. I'm goin back to borderlands if that happens.

    • I love the had cannon as a primary its not a pistol or a side arm is a freaking hand cannon. Also i am happy if i stays as a niche weapon i find it more satisfying to get kills with i found the auto rifle kinda "cheap" and if they make it a special weapon i wont be able to see my guardian holding it like a bad ass before the game lol

      Hand Cannons are near perfect right now. They just need small adjustments in damage or speed, but that's purely as a balance issue. Primary weapons are versatile and adaptive and can be used in a variety of situations. Hand cannons fire well from close to far range, and any differences between them and the other primary-types are EXACTLY how primary-types should vary. Hand cannons don't suit special weapons, as specials are used in largely-particular situations and can be rendered near useless otherwise; shotguns need close range to cause significant damage; snipers are too slow and too hard to aim for close-to-mid range, leaving them to excel at long range; and fusion rifles have a delay that require a lot of timing and consistent aim to not get obliterated between charges. Specials are good for filling holes in a player's gameplay given the map, mission, or the player's style of play or choice of primary. Hand cannons have no place in the special weapon type.

      • No way it's underpowered as a primary weapon let alone as a special weapon, a class of which each one will one shot you if used right. I'd be pissed if I was head shot mid rang with a hand gun and die instantly.

      • After some thought... I've come to the conclusion that level 8 is just too early in the game to call for radical changes to the entire hand cannon weapon group.

      • I am a hunter in Destiny and I personally love having hand cannons as a primary weapon because I am only good with them and if they had it as a special then I won't be able to use a sniper without changing my weapon.

        • Special weapons are reserved for weapons that access in a single aspect. Hand cannons are well rounded, and theres no point in having 2 well rounded weapons if you're never going to run out of ammo for the first.

          I think hand cannons are great where they are. I love them. But as a secondary they would be pointless and no one would use them. I used my hand cannon religiously in the beta. But if it was a secondary I would not even consider using it.

          • I would actually use this if it where a special. I'm not a fan at all with the shot guns... I mean pump shot guns... An no magazine, really?!? At least I haven't found one... And the fusion rifles seem worthless... So my only go to is the sniper. A hand cannon as an option for close quarters would sit better with me. Making it so it could be used as primary or a special would be best...

              So don't use it as your primary. Would you rather lose your sniper, shotgun, or Pulse rifle to equip this? Honest question there not sarcasm. I have felt it lacking at times in the primary, but would not want it to take the place of a special.

                • NO. Hand Cannons are the only Primary I actually enjoy using, and I know I'm not alone. Look at the other Primaries: -Auto Rifle -Pulse Rifle -Scout Rifle Notice anything... repetitive about that list? In pretty much every shooter out there, you're stuck using a rifle all the time. Destiny changes that and I love it. Keep Hand Cannons where they are, buff them in some form or fashion, and call it good.

                  • I agree that hand cannons should be made back into secondary weapons. Maybe if I had some insight into why Bungie changed it in the first place I'd be more inclined to agree with its current position, but as of now I feel that it has very little right to be a primary weapon. For me, it just screams special weapon. While it doesn't have the range requirements of a shotgun, the range capabilities of a sniper rifle, or the charge time of a fusion rifle, it does fit in with the other specials in that it requires careful thought (or at least a degree of skill) before using proficiently. It's not like the primary rifles that have their bulkier clips and spam-ability. This gun has a clip of 6 and damage that really only shines through with headshots (I know headshots improve your damage with even primary weapons, but none of those are really so dependent on that damage as handcannon). Like you said, it's a high risk/ high reward gun. I don't understand why they moved it to the primary slot, but obviously they had a good enough reason to justify it. I just wish I knew what it was! It's not even like I don't like the handcannon. I love that gun. It's really freakin' cool and pretty effective when I want to blow up a stronger enemy with 6 quick headshots. The only problem is that I can't bring myself to realistically use it over the scout or auto rifles. I can, however, see it being used as a viable in-between of the sniper and shotgun specials with a quickdraw factor that the fusion rifle lacks. On a side note, what do you guys think of sniper as a heavy weapon? I keep hearing more and more about it and while I can't say that I'm 100% for it, the movement of handcannon into the special slot would give me the precise option I crave and would leave me okay with sniper being heavy.

                  • I agree but only for hunters. Titans and warlocks absolutely suck with hand cannons but I do think so other gun should replace the hand cannon for primary that way hunters can still use golden gun

                    • I think it should have a high critical hit ratio that rewards headshots a lot. It should be like a close range sniper, but is countered by good strafing and jumping since if you don't get a headshot, it'll barely do damage.

                      Improving the hand cannon at it's basic mechanics is the way to go I think. I posted a topic about having the hand cannon fire as fast as the trigger is pulled and if that was the case it could easily be a useful Primary weapon, however, your special weapon argument is definitely valid, especially if it gets more players using them.

                    • Ok first i love the hand cannon an i believe its stats are fine it fits the role of a revolver how ever it lacks the versatility that a primary weapon should have example its not that hard to aim for the head but that's not the real problem this gun only works in your favor as a primary if the fight is in your favor if you have a limited number of enemy's that you need dead fast this gun rains in the top category of damage control but if your faced with a situation where you are being overrun-ed example the moon mission then this gun quickly becomes a liability it can stay as a primary ( tho honestly for personal reasons i would like it as a second ) but if it does it needs to be able to compensate for lack of versatility or the option to have this gun be placed in ether the primary or the secondary at players desecration
