What Destiny Requires to be a better online game *Teenager Friendly Edition*

This is a revised and shortened down version of my original post regarding the changes I believe are required to make Destiny a better online PVP experience. This is not a coop related topic; I am not interested in discussing coop vs PVP, or anything in relation to how Destiny is not designed to be a competitive shooter because it is. (Note the link at the bottom) In all honesty the online PVP aspect of this game is what will keep it alive in the long term; once a new Borderlands or the next coop grindfest is released these same coop players will be long gone. [u]More Class Distinction[/u] So far the only real meaningful distinctions are the jump style, grenade and the supers. However we have only gotten access to the game up to level 8 which can be achieved in about 2 hours of online play so at this point in time this is not a valid complaint. [u]Problems with supers[/u] As they are, the super functions in a way in which it is essentially a killstreak but without actually having to get any kills to get one. In a fairy tale land where everyone regardless of how good they are should get an equal chance there is no problem with this. However this is an online shooter where there needs to be a distinction between winners and losers. Bad players only improve by losing and adapting and not by getting their hand held, the exact same as any athlete in any sport. I am not asking for a complete transition to killstreaks as I receive massive amount of hate for even suggesting the word killstreak. An improves system to show you when an enemy has a super via radar for example, and perhaps a slowed down rate of super accumulation for dying i.e. bad play would add much needed balance. [u]Weapon Balancing[/u] The Hand Cannon needs some tweaking as almost nobody online actually uses the weapon. As does the Pulse Rifles, they are slow to fire and have insane recoil. The Auto Rifles are insanely powerful at all ranges despite the fact that the gun stats screen states that it should have a very poor to modest effective range in comparison to say the Scout Rifle. [u] In-air shooting accuracy[/u] This really should be boosted, I am not asking for perfect accuracy but at least make it a viable option. Having this would add much needed variety to the gunplay and would increase the skill cap of the PVP in general. Also considering so much of play is spent in the air it is a little strange that you cannot shoot whilst in the air. [u]Aim assist[/u] The aim assist is mega to the point where it is actually difficult to miss your opponent. I find myself only actually having to do a minor tweak to the aim assist to move my aim from the body to the head. This has been mentioned numerous times in other topics so this is a well-known issue and hopefully Bungie fixes it. [u]Lag[/u] Ever since the Xbox consoles were added to the beta the amount of lag in-game sky-rocketed to unacceptable levels. Hopefully this is just a beta issue and will not be present by release day. [u]Vehicles[/u] The vehicle rant has been removed as we all know Bungie are well aware of this issue and have tweaked this ahead of release day. I await further questions and debates, try not to be too upset by anything mentioned here as everyone has their own opinions and obviously the majority aren’t going to agree with everything I say.   • I agree with a lot of your points. I think the Supers shouldn't fully reset though, if they were to take like a 10% decrease for every death or something, that would be okay. I also think that the blast area of the Nova Bomb and Titan Slam are way to big. Players are using them as a crutch, getting shot, about to die, I'll just press a button, become invincible (in the case of a titan) get an undeserved kill and walk away. It is so frustrating when this happens, especially when you are so far away from the centre of the blast. The blast radius should be reduced, or if not, it should have different levels of damage for how far from the middle you are. With the Hunter's golden gun, you have to aim properly, and you can be killed just as usual, so it is unbalanced if the titan/warlock can just blast out a super in the general area of an enemy and get an instant kill. Pulse rifles accuracy needs increased/recoil decreased. Yes. No doubt. Next question Scout rifles fire rate should probably be decreased to balance out with the pulse rifle... just off the top of my head. The accuracy in mid air defo needs increased, like, why would they even decrease this in the first place? What game am I playing? When there is so much emphasis on vertical play, multiple floors, big gaps you have to jump over, character specific jumps, double jumps and triple jumps... why on earth would you then nerf accuracy in mid air? half the game is played in mid air! The lag was MEGA after hiatus, I have no idea what happened, just an influx of players slowing everything down? Alpha was great, beta before hiatus was great. After hiatus every game had noticible lag. In the full game I really hope there is an option for regional matchmaking. Vehicles are crazy strong. Without a Spartan Laser or a vehicle beat down option they are near unstoppable. I hate myself for actually using them, but I only do so because it's necessary to destroy the enemy vehicles. I love destiny. I want to keep loving destiny for months or years to come. I want weapons to have unique character and create play styles, not become irrelevant. I want ranks to be skill based, I want all kills to be deserved. Bad players must die. END

            I think you make the mistake of believing Destiny is mean't to be a "top tier" competitive shooter in the first place. As an RPG it has simply too many variables split between two separate modes of play to be the digital chess you want it to be. With that in mind their is nothing wrong with attempting to correct errors but it will never reach the MLG compliance people seem to want it to.

              • I actually disagree that the scout rifle is beat out by a person with an auto rifle. I would consider myself and my friends as exceptionally good players. That being said we have played many good people in the beta that used the scout rifle and have done very well with it. So well that we switched over to it. IMO if the player using the scout rifle has any experience playing past Halo games and using the dmr well they should do fairly well with it.

                • Can you edit with the changes you would make? For example, a hand cannon shouldn't just be cut from the game, it should be given a unique role (ex, a close range "sniper"). In addition, the supers shouldn't be only based on killstreaks, because snowballing would become terrible. They are meant to be a special use weapon that serves a strategic purpose. For example, the nova bomb and fist of havoc are wall breakers that kill grouped up enemies. I do feel like the game would be more strategic if the shooting was slowed down to be more like halo, where a scout rifle would be a 5 shot instead of 2.5. Also, without the supers, what would stop destiny from being basically CoD?

Why shouldn't someone be allowed to use a super once a day if you are on a 15 kill streak it's cause you are a good player and if you get killed by a super it's cause you made a mistake an was in a place you weren't supposed to be no matter what bungie does to balance things( which in my opinion they don't need to ) people will still find a way to bichhhh an moan

                    • You have good ideas but missed a few that are really important. First off 60fps is a must simply because it decrease reaction time allowing for more skill to be prevalent and making the game more pleasing in both look and feel. Second the field of view is absolutely the worst I have ever had to put up with in a shooter as my character has absolutely no peripheral vision combine that with the ridiculously large gun models will result in just flat out not seeing enemies. Third remove the damn minimap any body who plays seriously will always try to think of ways manipulate the minimap by utilizing teammates verticality and even the biggest problem sitting crouched in a corner with a shotgun and knowing exactly when an enemy is at that door. Removing the minimap will force us to scan the environment and give a feeling of uncertainty. My last change is just to increase the player count these maps were in no way designed for 6v6 as evidenced by the amazingly boring moon map

                      • PVP was fine... Sick of these MLG threads. MLG needs to realise you have to be good at the game the way it is. Not change the game so MLG bads can actually play good. I would love aim assist to go... Just because it messes me up more than it ever has helped (enemy runs past my sights and they move... Making me miss the target I was aiming for that's dumb)

                            I love how Bungie said this isn't for competitive players along time ago, and they keep saying with every other post. Yet competitive players keep saying things.... just boggles my mind... who are the competitive players talking too? Bungie isn't listening...                                 [spoiler] TL DR if you're an idiot on a forum with a low attention span, don't bother reading [/spoiler] The comments on these forums are ridiculous. What the hell is wrong with all these guys saying you're trying to turn the game into an mlg game? You brought up plenty of what others already brought up...weapons...vehicles...supers...etc...I'm glad you brought up the player mechanics and the depth it adds to the combat in the sand box. The general consensus from these people is the beta build should be the launch build. Adapt to any broken features, don't change absolutely nothing, let us Keep beta progress because that's what the beta was for. You mentioned halo...great...do people not understand bungie made halo? That those mechanics made it So good and fun? It expands what a player can do in the sand box. It adds another tactical option to take. Those are bungies trademarks. Not 343....you aren't turning it into halo...Destiny has jump,,,hip fire...the idea is make it better than halo....instead...those mechanics are under used and penalized in Destiny...resulting In a straight forward strafe and shoot mechanic....that will grow stale I fear... This games way to straight forward. There's penalties for going outside the typical strafe and shoot tactic. Instead The supers replaced that. Just wait for your super meter and waltz up to the control point and blast the entire team defending the zone there. Its going to be hard to fix the supers. You can't make them worthless. But if the depth of the player mechanics is remedied, perhaps there would be less resorting to just sitting and waiting for your super. Enhancing player mechanics results in more variety and exciting combat. More survivability and turning around a fight, and less who shot the first shot wins.. Right now the crucible provides some fun. But pve is where Destiny shines the most. The crucible feels incomplete. Its lacking a little. I think it's depth to playability. Right now it's strafe and shoot, pick up special and heavy ammo, spam super. There's no leaping from a vantage point cause you're getting shot at, out maneuvering 2 or more players shooting at you while landing all your shots, surviving the battle and even winning it. Instead...it's a simple strafe....or run away...if you can....or if they're close enough, super them or hide and pop out with golden gun...supers shouldn't be a crutch all the time. Destiny could be the funnest multiplayer ever. The potentials right there. Shit maybe if those mechanics were in the game people wouldn't feel the need to nerf the ARs cause now you got an alternative to dodging it while still landing shots. Or maybe players don't want shit changed cause they want that easy kill. A target that's not moving around as much. I'm no mlg player. I wasn't even that good at halo, and I was ok in Destiny. Its the fun factor of the combat system I'm targeting. Combat depth makes a world of a difference. In what you can do, and how you can do it...the more options, the more we distinguish ourselves as players. Anyways man you had some decent suggestions. This forums for feedback, and you provided your thoughts. Thanks for sharing, and sorry for the long reply.

                                  • I stopped reading at the supers part and mention of COD kill streaks, and skimmed the rest (barely). Such a reward mechanic does not belong in Destiny (and I don't like it). You seem to not get the up-my-sleeve mechanic of the PvP, and possibly not too familiar with Halo's either. This is not just a primary wep vs primary wep PvP game. In Halo the real for-the-kill weapons, were first come first served, around the map. In Destiny you already have them, it's just a matter of using them. You get supers faster for kills and from orbs (working as a team). But the heavy ammo is up for grabs at certain times and places (I don't know the pattern if there is one.) These things gives newbies, unlucky, struggling players a chance to fight back, get back into the action, if you will. It's a good thing because it keeps players on their toes more, and it also doesn't mean said players tactics with advantages will ensure kills (they can still miss, even with supers, I've seen it.) This creates a more balanced (fair) game then that stupid COD thing (I don't really care about anything else you said.)

                                        • I agree on several points, but I disagree on supers, air combat, and lag. Supers - What you're suggesting would help a team that is doing well to just steamroll the enemy since the better off team would be able to use supers at clutch times and the opposing team would rarely, if ever, get to use theirs. Also the majority of players would never even get to use their special if it reset after dying. While I agree that it would suck to have a streak cut short by a super, I find it better than what you're suggesting. Air Combat - While the penalties might be too large, there should definitely be penalties to shooting while jumping. Since it is supposed to be about skill I would say tone down the bloom but remove all aim assist and increase recoil (something like 2x or just flat out set it to max). Lag - I think this was more your playtime. I played the beta throughout the weekend and I didn't have a lot of lag. In fact I can only think of 2-3 instances where there was noticeable lag; and they all happened just before being forced to get a patch or the servers going down temporarily.
