PvP Strategy: For Scrubs, By A Scrub

This of course is being learned by yours truly as well. As being a longtime BF Vet, I've been getting melted in PvP because I'm been doing it wrong. I'm learning though, and these tips here will hopefully help some others who're having troubles as well. A big thank you to everyone who are contributing their own insights and advice toward helping struggling players "git gud". Not everyone can be KD whores. 1) Unlearn your tendencies. This isn't CoD. Nor Battlefield. Stop going in thinking that what you do on those games will work on this, and you'll find your success in firefights will be a little better. 2) Lone Wolves die young. Stick with your team. STICK. WITH. YOUR. TEAM. One more time for those who have eyesight problems...STICK WITH YOUR *BLEEPING* TEAM DAMMIT! 3) Use the right weapon for the map. Wider open maps like The Moon, you should use mid to long range weapons. Compact maps like Venus use short to mid range weapons with more impact. If you're going to stick to a single "favorite" weapon, learn where and when to use it to it's best effect. 3) S.A.C.- Strafing, Accuracy & Cover. Live it, learn it, love it. STRAFING- Always move laterally when engaged. Those footsteps are the difference between hits and misses. ACCURACY- Make your shots count as much as possible. Headshots are king, but there are no instakills from them in Destiny (except for Sniper rifles), so it's key to know your weapon's recoil and compensate accordingly. COVER- Corners, ledges, whatever. Your success in firefights increases when you put something in between you and your enemy. Use the terrain to your advantage! 4) Specials aren't just for show. If you get it, USE IT. 5) Grenades. Because grenades. 6) You're not Superman, the T-Rex or the Terminator. If you have a bad round, it's not that you suck. If you find yourself getting picked off, capped or blown away frequently, it's not that your opponents are better, YOU'RE DOING SOMETHING WRONG. Each class has it's strengths and weaknesses. LEARN THEM. Each weapon has it's perks and limitations. LEARN THEM TOO. Did I miss anything? Do you have anything to add? Feel free fellow Guardians.

  • What are these weapon perks and strengths you speak of? All I see is Autorifles being a 'left click to win' and everything else being lacklustre.

    • I do fine treating it like Battlefield... The only problem I have is that every game I'll get 3-4 kills from supers yet die to them around 8-9 times. It's annoying as hell.

    • I'm trying, but I am still terrible. I cannot even get the opponents in my sights before being dead. Every game is a massacre. I am now just hiding and attempting to use cover, I only come out when I have a grenade. Then I can't even get it thrown before I am killed. I really don't like not being able to talk to my team but if I could they would hear my frustration through every curse word known followed by thrown controllers. I was good at halo. I still don't understand how everyone else can aim for heads so quickly. I have the joystick speed cranked up to 10, should I back it off some?

It's definitely a progression to learning bro....man I got wrecked in MP a lot...I had to unlearn Many things, and since crouch isn't on left stick my game plays changed a hell of a lot. I came from halo, and this sure feels nothing like halo to me outside a familiar reticle now and then. I agree with everything you said, it's all on point. But one major thing you gotta note is radar and crouching, I'm still mot 100% on if you're standing you show on radar or not...but to be on the safe side...You see that right corner slice slowly brighten red...crouch...and find cover where you can see the openings near you since you won't know where they will choose to come from. Patience saves lives, too Much patience handicaps your team. I'm still learning all this. One other thing, is sensitivity. I played with it on 3 because it was easier to aim. I quickly found out Its a bad option. Boost sensitivity to a higher than normal number and play explore and practice with it. First shot is a enormous advantage in Destiny especially if it was a head shot...so you want to make sure you can spin fast enough to the guy you noticed at the corner of the screen and hopefully pop a head shot before he gets his sights on you. Lastly, bait the enemy, don't run in. Let them come to you while you're in an advantageous position to fight. Only go in if you got team mates covering a few angles with you. Everyone all packed together can wind up killed by a vortex nade, or supers.

            • If you wanna get good at Destiny's PVP before release I have one suggestion. Go pick up a copy of Halo 3. Play it for the next month. Get used to the mechanics. Destiny's PVP requires a lot more skill than COD or BF. It's about timing, situational awareness and making every shot count. If you develop these skills you can learn how to outgun your enemy even if they get the drop on you or your outnumbered. Remember the classic trifecta. Guns, grenades and melee. Learn to use all your tools to your advantage.

            • Movement, Accuracy, Cover. I find that this game has different levels of radar abuse, including height, to throw people off, use the knowledge that people know just about the same amount as you about this game.

            • The sad thing is once one team starts really winning, members of the other team will start ragequitting and at that point it becomes impossible to catch up. There needs to be a penalty for quitting early.

                      • If you're a vet at fps', how can you get slaughtered in destiny? (mustn't be so great at fps' then - just saying) I'm not trying to be a moron here or disrespectful but its an fps, it should be second nature to you. I've only ever played halo at my friends house once in a blue moon if they even ever played it but I was able to top every match pretty much. The only tip i can say is play plenty of the pve before starting pvp, not only would you've learnt your current class but you'd have more skills and better gear. As for team combo's, it normally doesn't matter too much but consider that the hunter doesn't have the ability to kill everyone in a room with their super like the other 2 do. Warlock is better at it. My point is, you want maybe 1 hunter, 2 warlocks/titans. Maybe even 3 warlocks if you really want to control zones. Reason: warlock's grenades (one that does damage over time) shuts people from going through paths or doors and their ulti can kill lots and can be shot from a distance, Still haven't got to my main point yet. Imagine this: you're playing with friends with mics, you go to A capture point and notice there's a whole field full of enemies. Now, if you had an abundance of warlocks and titans you could call for a super to be done in that room to kill them all, if you had an abundance of hunters it'd be a bit hard to kill them with the super.

                        • Tricks that work Shotgun camping for high kd -how to- Get a high dmg shotgun and go into a room or around a corner The dmg falls off greatly at range but up close they can 1 hit Standing still makes you invisble to enemy motion tracker As soon as you pull trigger immediatly melee to gauntee the kill Auto rifles -why- They offer a great balance of all stats Able to deal good continuos dmg at rang and they usualy dont have alot of recoil Close rang full auto is deadly Relativly fast reloads Titan ult -so?- So the titans aoe is as big as the circle for a capture point come in from above and slam down to either kill or force a fall back from enemy Group loosely -why?- Both warlock and titan ults hit a large area for intense dmg and hunter pistol is easy to aim at groups Yes stay together but also keep some space Example dont have 4 ppl capping a zone because if an ult comes you all die First in first out -what does that mean???- Enter a room first then if you encounter resistance leave Reload for a full clip remember the layout of room and where enemy was Toss a nade in to force enemy to reposition and re-engage while they are out of cover This trick allows you to control field area while posing less risk than a front rush Play with a friend -ive got tons on psn and live!- Not those friends necisarly Pick ppl you know personnaly and have gamed with before All players have thier own tricks and strats and if you know what your friend is going to do you can better coordinate with his or her efforts Setting up a cross fire is a good move Lastly control points arent everything! -thats total bs- No it isnt, the score is to 20000 points and the majority of these are from kills However for each point you control each kill is worth more towards your score While controlling a zone will let you build points fast an enemy team with 1 point can still win with high skill -praise the traveler-

                            • It's good to stick to your team but NOT too close. A super will obliterate the entire group. Also, sometimes leaving your group behind to defend an objective when you have a super is actually a good strategy. You slow down their point taking while your teammates go capture other point.
