Destiny Beta: The good, The Bad, and The Ugly

[u]The Destiny Beta[/u] [b]1. Character Creation[/b] The Character Creation in the Beta is great, it is really nice, however my friend and I were discussing it, and found a few flaws. First off for the humans there are very few hair styles for the male character and the rest are aimed towards the female character. This lost some customization for the characters. Also for all of the creation people are going to have way too many creations that look alike. Now I know you can't help that in some cases, some people like the same looks, but in the full release add like 1/2 or 2X the amount of hair styles or facial features or every customization in general. That would fix the character creation and make it a lot better for launch. [b]2. The Game Intro/Tutorial [/b] The game intro area is good don't get me wrong, but it is waaaay too easy, granted you are at level one and so is the enemy so it makes it fair, but it feels like a chore if you wish to make a new character again. I am hoping that this intro was purely crafted for the Beta and the full release is going to be a lot different and better/more fun. You could have each person start off in their own in different starting locations, and eventually lead into a massive event with 11 other guardians like you guys showed at the E3's and announcement trailers. That would really capture the spirit of the intent of Destiny. Heck the 12 guardians could even meet a few of each other and form a fireteam or two. that would provide sooo much more social integration and fun and excitement to Destiny. [b]3. The voice of the Ghost (Peter Dinklage)[/b] The Voice acting by Peter Dinklage has gotten better from the Alpha, but it's still not that good. It's not that enjoyable, and I hate to say this against Peter, but find another voice actor. Here are a few voice actors my friend and I came up with Mark Hamill (Luke Skywalker), Danny Wallace (the voice of Shaun Hastings in assassin's creed), or Tim Dadabo (the voice actor for 343 Guilty spark). Those are three candidates for better voice actors for the Ghost that my friend and i came up with it. Peter Dinklage isn't bad, but to make the Ghost be better i would try one of those. (I personally would choose Tim Dadabo the voice of 343. It would work so well and it would be an easter egg that links to one of your previous works.) [b]4. The multiplayer[/b] I know the multiplayer is the Beta version and we only have access to 4 maps and one gametype, but on maps like the moon the 6 on 6 just isn't big enough for that map. You don't really run into anyone at first and isn't as fast paced as it could be. Maybe put it up 8 on 8 and i think it would work a lot better and be more fun as well as faster paced. Also maybe try competitive races with guardians sparrows. It would be a nice social non-combat multiplayer that would be cool i think. [b]5. The Tower[/b] The Tower is a great social place, but its lacking in being very social. A kind of cantina place should be added where you could meet fellow guardians and play a round of cards or dice and use glimmer as a betting option or they could just play to play. It would open up more social integration. Maybe even add a dueling ring for 1on 1 if someone has a grudge or wants to test their metal against someone. It would be nice and sooo much more social that people would actually use. [b]6. The Strike/Story missions and difficulty[/b] The Missions are fantastic and if you bump up the difficulty finishing the mission makes you feel accomplished. Like in Dark Souls. You feel accomplished after defeating a hard boss or getting passed a area. It's a great feeling! and for the free roam part of it if you are by yourself could you make it to where any enemies you find are attuned to your level? Otherwise it just makes the free roam too easy and no point to really free roam at all. And what is the point to free roam? No high level enemies in areas and misc missions that aren't that exciting? there has to be more that I am missing. This is my feedback to you Bungie and to you Deej. I am hoping that these ideas are taken into consideration and even some implemented into the full release. I'll see you on 9-9-14! #BecomeLegend

  • Definitely agree with a lot of your points. As someone who's sunk about 30 hours into the Beta, I think a lot of their stuff is on point, but tweaks here and there would be cool. Been talking about your armor and stuff getting dirty the longer you're out in battles and stuff over here.   • I think peter does a fine job as the ghost, but he could have sounded a little more enthusiastic. Granted he is a robotic ai, but look at cortana. She's enthusiastic and lively, and she's also an ai. But peter sounds a little... Too robotic. And after a while it's gets boring, since he's with you through the whole game. I know this isn't supposed to be a performance of a life time, and hell he still does a good job, I just wish he could have gotten a little more into it.

  • I think Dinklage does fine, but in a few areas he seems a little weak. For example: "Fallen drop ships? [i]This close to the surface?[/i] Move!" Just listen to it. It sounds disconnected, like they pieced together the sound clips.

    • I love Dinklage as the ghost, sure its a little hammy sometimes but he is a robot, so its fine. I think he is doing a great job.

      • 1. Hit boxes Seeing as the Destiny engine was developed from Reach's engine, I didn't figure the hit boxes would be an issue. Halo has the best hit boxes I've seen yet. They are a tad but buggy and some shots on the periphery of the target don't register properly (Frustratingly around the head too). 2. Controls I got very used to bumper jumper in Bungie's previous title and didn't want to abandon what was comfortable for me in Destiny. Sadly though, when using the bumper jumper controls "A" is the special ability and I think I speak for everyone when I say the "A" button is the king for being accidentally pressed. My suggestion is simple, allow us to assign a particular action to whatever button we want. That way, everyone can come up with something that is comfortable to them. 3. Vehicle vs Player Don't get me wrong, vehicles are and should be a power advantage to the team/play that possess it... But any player that's just hoofing it should be able to take down any vehicle without needing an ace up their sleeve. It should be difficult to accomplish and the player should have to be sly and smart about it, but it needs to be much more plausible than in the current build. 3. Customization So far I've only got two suggestions about the customization. A. Modular customization. This could be something you had planned and just weren't telling us... I wouldn't show us this if you're doing it... By modular customization I mean if I have a fusion rifle that has a part that gives it fire capabilities, I want to be able to dismantle it and put that fire "module" in say a sniper rifle or an auto rifle etc. just a neat idea. B. Custom Names Let us rename pieces of armor and weapons to make our arsenals even more unique. If I have a badass hand cannon with some spank on it, let me call it Medusa's Kiss. Or if I've got a sniper that can knock you out after just one shot like you're a lightweight, let me call it Captain Morgue. I think you guys get the picture. 4. General Multiplayer advice Bungie, I've loved all of your games and the best part about your competitive multiplayer is that they do a good job of making kills about who is the better and more skilled player; not about who has some shiny toy around the corner. Please stay true to making skill matter, not aces up sleeves. This has been a great beta and I can't wait to see what you guys do with this. I hope you're reading! It means a lot to me and many more fans that you take the time to consider our thoughts. Happy hunting, Loyal Fan

          "find another voice actor"?!?!?! really??the game launches in 46 days and you are telling them to get another voice actor? really??..aint gonna happen. Peter is just fine..if it aint broke, no need to fix it

        • I have to agree with the enemies one, why bother roaming, most enemies are below your level and they ALL spawn in exactly the same spots so there is no random feel to it. I'd like to see random enemy spawn locations and varying levels.

        • What do you mean no high level enemies in areas? I've been exploring in free roam, and met level 14 and level 20 enemies that one-shotted me. Made me want to do more missions to come back and see what the hell they were guarding! :D And the secret chests stashed around really incentivized me to explore more! :)

          • Edit: Played more of both PvE and PvP. PvE is freakin fantastic! It's what it's said to be. PvP not so much. The use of supers ruins strategy and if someone is a high level with higher level weapons they screw over everyone else. Because people take in weapons they find and upgrades it makes PvP unfair. Bungie needs to fix this.

          • I agree with having to play the first mission over again if you want to make a new character and after the first mission on the second when you have to get the warp drive you have to go listen to the voice of the traveler guy for like 5 minutes

            • I agree with your tower idea,the place seems desolate. They should add a shooting range to test weapons before you buy it and trying out new gear before the purchase

              A lot of hate on Dinklage voicing the Ghost. I think people keep forgetting, but the Ghost is a robot. We also don't know much about Ghost, outside of reviving Guardians and being a part of the Traveller.

              • this is a good game, but we need to be able to level up more or have something extra/truly different in explore and story missions. This is getting boring doing the same things over and over theres only really like 3-4 things different for each class.

Heroic Strike in the Alpha felt fine in terms of difficulty but it seems they nerfed that. (feel free to correct me if I am wrong)

                • I think the world events could use a bit more kick, the first time a drop ship spawned in the world I was awe struck but since after no events have really caught my attention as much. Maybe switch up the rarity of some enemies that attack in these events, I know when I remember back in halo days no matter how many times I walked upon a hunter it made me cringe pretty much everytime. I guess what I'm trying to say is randomize the events more and throw some bungie twists at us we can take whatever you have up your sleeves!

                • I agree with everything accept the voice actor. I think it's a nice twist for the little flying ghost to have a deeper voice. Besides, it'd be too difficult to get a voice and not really worth it.

                • I m enjoying the Beta so far after finally getting a code. There needs to be more instruction/display on how to unlock multiplayer. I had to go on youtube to watch a video on how to figure it out. I also really like the calling up your ghost to ride on in the free roam. I m leaning more toward buying the game.

                • The tower being more Social and the idea of games like chess or cards I really agree with. But who knows, maybe that stuff is just behind doors and we will see it in the full release

                • Destiny: Beta’s outlook. By now we got the gist of what is forthcoming. We don’t know everything but it’s hard to think we will get what we have seen due to certain er- issues. (Can we say no porting in to your friend on the surface?) This is my take on it. Graphics: Well if you want a lot going on without slowdown ya gonna need to not fill it with the best graphics. Why WoW lasted so long. May not be the best graphics, but more people can play it smoothly then most MMos out there. Sounds: Par for the course. Nothing really outstanding though seems the commercials have more dramatic music than anything in game. I would say average for a shooter. Gameplay: Pretty solid. Nothing out of the ordinary however. Chars float a bit (warlock a lot when he/she jumps) but regardless of what Bungie wanted this is VERY Halo like. PvP: I have no comment. I only recently been able to play FPS without being nauseated so I suck at PvP though I will play for fun when the game comes out. PvE: For me this is the bread and butter and it supports it as well as the PvP portion. I thank you Bungie for doing this as I have a lot of fun just hunting. Gets boring after a while and I wish mobs were a bit more random above and below ground but otherwise for me it’s great. Environment: Well we got to see the Tower and Russia. They fit but there needs to be more interaction. We should be able to collect more stuff from enemies and the field itself so we can make and do things like special rounds or customize and create our own special Cloaks, Waist flaps and Armbands. The locations are fine but seemed a bit repetitive and not enough going on in the back ground. (Like enemy Fallen or Hive ships just floating in the sky or space ships in the dock coming and going like they do on the main promenade.) We also need more lighting effects at night like when we fire our guns or throw a glowing grenade should actually- glow- Social- They wanted it but it is the WORSE feature in the game by far. With an idea that is (kinda) ho hum what could have made up for it was the ease of socializing. What they did was seriously crush any desire to group up with strangers and truly feel a part of the game’s world. *We need to be added to a fireteam and drop down above ground where our teammate is or outside the door to that underground area our teammate is at. *We need to have the ability to speak to people in the Tower if not on the ground itself by default. (Typing least in the tower would be fine for most.) *We need to click on an option to ‘call’ anyone out in the field. (Their choice if they want to accept the call though.) I’d give the beta a C+ (social could really hit this up big time) The main thing people will likely watch out for is. *Cost of DLC *Cost of Destiny 2 and 3 since they are NOT expansions. *If they can make the social thing actually work in the game as needed. Oh and where is the rain and snow??

                  • Since the game is 6 weeks from launch, and probably a few weeks from print, none of this crap is going to happen. It's possible they could add a 1v1 arena later on down the line, but everything else is about 3 years too late. It's possible that the aesthetic problems you have with the game are already addressed. More importantly, the things they CAN address, and should, aren't even on your list - like party drops, confusing tutorial, and voice chat being completely broken. Also keep in mind, this is a Stress Test Beta. That means they are basically done with the game, they are just looking to test the server architecture and network loads. They aren't looking for suggestions for actors at this point in the development. In my own opinion - I haven't played a game this good in a long time. In all phases, as well - and this is a BETA! The good people at Bungie are masters of storytelling, graphics, FPS mechanics, social interaction, and solid network code. I have faith that these things have been, and will be polished beyond expectations.

                  • I like your ideas. I'd like to add a Kiosk at the tower where Guardians can groom themselves and change their hairstyles and markings.
