Hipfire, Melee function and a couple other PvP questions

To the people who got into the Alpha, How effective was hipfire? Were you able to outstrafe those who were ADSing? How much does ADS affect movement? How does melee work? As in, when you have your Cooldown Melee ready, does it automatically use it when you hit the melee button? What does the 'Player Highlight' button do in PvP? and finally, Did you have fun? From what I've seen, it all looks pretty awesome and I'm hype.

  • I can weigh in on a couple of these. Hip fire felt pretty weak for a Bungie game. I found myself getting frustrated and switching to ads even at close range. Strafing was decent in both hip fire and ads, but not great. Melee abilities are used whenever you melee and the cool down bar is full. The exception is the hunter's throwing knife, which seems to detect when you are in melee range and only goes off when appropriate. It was definitely fun.

    • I didn't run much in the Crucible during the Alpha (was more interested in seeing the world where I'll pry spend most of my time). Hipfire was okay but there does seem to be an overall greater focus on ADS in Destiny than there was in Halo. Melee felt pretty weak, aside from when you had your special melee ability charged. Finally - Team Work is crucial, only game I really got frustrated in was one where I was on a team that just wasn't working together and subsequently got slaughtered.

Hip fire is really effective but it depends on the gun. For example I could get tons of kills hip firing a hand cannon but not the pulse rifle. Naturally it's not as accurate as halo since all guns have ads. Some guns are meant to be hip fired and have "increase accuracy when shooting from the hip" on their skill tree Melee is EXTREMELY satisfying for all classes in Destiny. The other dude already answered your question. The highlight player option brings up a menu that let's you invite players to your fire team, view their PSN/Xbox live account, or look at their gear.

        • Hip fire isn't as strong as halo, but it is a definite option at close range.
