College applications are bullshit.

I was sick the week of orientation for the spring semester at the university I want to attend, so I wasn't able to get in. And now I just realized that I had to go through the entire application process AGAIN in order to take the summer semester. That deadline was February 4. I talked to about five people on the phone who said that I was fine--that they already had my information in their system so all I had to do was register for orientation. NOPE! Turns out I'm -blam!-ed. The deadline for the fall semester was also February 4. So now I have to pay $50* and pray to every deity there is that I'll get in in the fall (which I probably won't). This is complete and utter bullshit. Now I'm just going to be sitting on my ass until I can figure out what to do. *Why does it cost 50 goddamn dollars to submit an application? Is that a fee for the few kb of data transferred, or is it for the nail-biting excitement of not knowing whether the university will say yes or not? EDIT: I accept that ultimately this is my fault. I'm just frustrated as hell. I'm going to work in a computer shop that one of my dad's friends owns. Hopefully I'll be able to develop some skills (and grow up a bit) before I actually start college. While part of me would like to just not go and roll the dice, my grandma left me $200K for college when she passed away, and I intend on not disappointing her or my family.

  • Welcome to adulthood, responsibility is increased 10-fold. Being sick is no excuse to miss important college functions. It's time to man up.

    • Presumably the $50 is a gate to prevent an overloading of their system by people who are applying who aren't even sure if they wanted to go.

    • College itself is bullshit. I paid my tuition online with an e-check on time and everything and even had the receipt and took a screenshot of the confirmation page. Apparently the check didn't go through and got bounced and I had pay tuition plus a 70 dollar late fee. When I tried to show them the receipt showing that I had paid on time to get rid of that 70 dollar fee they simply said oh we don't need that. If you want to get rid of the late fee write a letter to so and so with a valid excuse. Like I had the -blam!-ing confirmation telling you I paid on time!! Idiots.

      • welcome to your crash course to real life, where you're always at fault, and the deadlines actually matter.

      • I was gonna go to college but I decided against it be side it costs too much, no guaranteed job, and why would anyone wanna be a debt slave to the US Gov or some private bank. That's why I'm going to aircraft mechanic school. Something I've always wanted to do. And if I complete it in sittin at 50k a year starting salary. A 20 year old with a 50k salary.... Bahaaha glorious.

      • Strange, I just went up to the administration during the designated time period and enrolled. Never had any issues. Good luck though, I hope you get in. And the 50$ is probably both a penalty for being late and a compensation towards the college for having someone go back and do work that was supposed to be wrapped up months ago.

        • It's a way for them to make a quick buck even though education is supposed to be free or at least cheap in the first place.

        • I imagine the fee covers staffing costs for whatever department handles applications. That being said, applying for college is the worst. It hasn't been pleasant for either of the schools I've gone to.

          • I handed in a half-completed application on the very last day but I still got into UConn.
