Will Activision hurt Bungie in the long run?

Most of you heard, Activision spent half a billion dollars to fund all of Destiny's desires. However, I can't help but think the over-advertising will actually be a turnoff for most people, because most people hate mainstream. Call of Duty has a horrible reputation because it is mainstream, and it has all the nine year olds in the world. My question is, despite the fact Destiny is the most funded game of all time, do you think it will actually hurt them in the end?

Unlike a lot of people here, I don't hate Activision. They're one of the oldest gaming publishers in existence. They're partially responsible for the popularity of gaming today.

    • Bungie is a for-profit company and making a deal with the business empire that is Activision will bring them more profit so no it won't hurt them.

    • Activision helping them can be a good thing if they let Bungie be Bungie. They will make a lot more money trusting them to put out games as they please rather than pushing a game out every year like cod.

      • Long run? Probably, but this destiny will be good at least, the lack of joe staten makes me pessimistic about the future, and activisions history makes me more so.

      • Activision will push Bungie to release game items that has to be paid with real money. Like World of Warcraft's Astral tigers and mounts. Micro-transactions in Destiny might not be a too far fetched idea. If makes sense in a business point of view. I would pay 50$ or more to have a unique or a limited edition sparrow. Long story short, Activisions will do as much as possible (with out damaging the franchise)to get the most profit out of it.

Except that there is a direct correlation between the ammount of advertising a product recieves. and it's sales. There is a reason advertising exists.

I am more worried on what will happen if the game turns not out to be as good as they say and they (activision) wasted all that money for nothing , hyped for this game though.

Nothing wrong with good advertising; it's how things get sold. And a new IP definitely needs to have good advertising to make itself well-known. As long as the advertising is more grounded into what the game can do and what can be done with it, there's nothing wrong with that. Advertise away; keep the hype strong but in-check.

        • I don't mind spending extra in a game I enjoy, 1 example is world of tanks you need to buy the beginner package which is 50 quid and there are extras also u can buy, graphics on tanks is rubbish yet u need to pay 50 for a fighting chance otherwise pointless playing. At least with Destiny you pay for the game and get something worth the money with adv of buying extras

          • no, their contract basically means Bungie has complete freedom to do whatever the -blam!- they want.

            • Bungie has a ton of freedom, they will do what they've always done, which is make great games. I think that Activision is putting so much money behind it because they are convinced it will be the next Halo in terms of status and fan base, so they are really loading the cannons double-charge for this one.

              • I disagree. Bungie will greatly need the advertising. Simple ask two people on the street what Destiny is and all you will get is a blank look. Ask them what CoD advanced warfare is and they will say, "oh yeah that's some game I just saw." *Takes glasses off* So you see, Bungie needs to step up their marketing campaign and Activision is just the group to do it.

Oh, yeah. I said Bungie needed to say far the -blam!- away from Activision, and now we have one console getting special treatment. Watch, Activision's dabbling is going to lead to worse and worse shit as time goes on.
