The costs of inaction on climate change will be "catastrophic", according to US Secretary of State John Kerry.
Mr Kerry was responding to a major report by the UN which described the impacts of global warming as "severe, pervasive and irreversible".
He said dramatic and swift action was required to tackle the threats posed by a rapidly changing climate.
Our health, homes, food and safety are all likely to be threatened by rising temperatures, the report says.
Scientists and officials meeting in Japan say the document is the most comprehensive assessment to date of the impacts of climate change on the world.
In a statement, Mr Kerry said: "Unless we act dramatically and quickly, science tells us our climate and our way of life are literally in jeopardy. Denial of the science is malpractice.
Welp. We've past the point of no return now guys. Everyone is now going to be affected by climate change. It's pretty sad, because it was initially preventable.
-
HAHAHA! Both the UN and John Kerry are complete jokes. Of course climate change is irreversible. Nature is going to do what it has always done and we are not even close to taming her. We give ourselves way too much credit when we arrogantly say we impact this planet. We don't.
-
I can't tell if they mean that it's already irreversible, or it will be irreversible if we don't do something now.
-
Every time one of these reports comes out. John Kerry comes out with his usual rhetoric about how we need to act now, and then nothing is done anyway. Considering the people who are in charge of this world, we are absolutely screwed.
-
Inb4 someone actually thought we were going to be able to change our ways in time. We all knew it was inevitable that not enough would be done in time.

inb4someonesays 'well it's too late now, better make the most of our lives and -blam!- the future of the planet'

Wow I just read the article. Why dont we all just kill ourselves now? Oh thats right because politicians and the UN have a reputation for making climate change into a sulfur and fire event while they whizz around in their private jets and cool their mansions. To me it is hard to discern whether this is just a stupid Y2K frenzy or not.
-
Good, now we can stop hearing about it!
-
Well, to Rapture!
-
Yeah there's already enough carbon and other green house gasses in the atmosphere that sea levels are going to continue to rise even if we all stopped polluting. But that's been like that for about a decade or two; we passed the point of no return a while ago. Our efforts now are how we can cope and adapt with all these environmental changes.
-
"hurr durr liberal agenda no such thing as climate change"
-
Oh well, we -blam!-ed around and missed our deadline. Now's not the time to despair though, we need to take this time to minimize loss of life, adapt our society, find ways to preserve ecosystems, and install the infrastructure and the culture that will keep it from getting any worse; we'll need to get creative but as they say "necessity is the mother of invention". I would like to read the original report when i get the chance though.

Nothings changed since they last said this.... Companies don't care about the planet, just the $$$

Well, this is why I hate Republicans.
-
Not like anything would be done to stop it anyways.
-
Well, "not reversible" isn't quite accurate. It's not reversible within our projected lifetimes, or within a time-frame that can avoid nasty repercussions from continued human intervention on the climate, but we still have the power to mitigate those repercussions, and to start a path for overall biome recovery in the future. I don't want people thinking "Oh, we're past the point of no return. Let's just go whole hog because -blam!- it."

Edited by Explodingpiglets: 3/31/2014 10:35:55 PMIf climate change is happening, there was nothing we can do to stop it.
-
Good, can we stop hearing about it now?
-
Irreversible? How so? You may be able to debate many aspects of climate change but I hope we can all agree that this is not irreversible. I'm no scientist in this area but I 'm pretty sure the earth has ways of absorbing CO2 from the atmosphere. Maybe not even close to the rate we are emitting but saying it is "irreversible" seems silly.

Edited by RIP delta: 3/31/2014 9:53:32 PMApparently the UK and Northern Europe are most at risk of flooding and drought, bizarrely. 600 feet above sea level and hardly any chance of a drought Don't care Sue the older generations and all manufacturers! #YOLO

Climate change. Coldest winter in 20 years k West.

Now watch them release another report in a year or two that says something entirely different.
