Your opinion on killstreaks

Love 'em.

18

Hate 'em.

73

Indifferent (obligatory 'random' answer: monkeys).

32

So what say you lot? I imagine, with a majority of us born and raised as MP gamers by the king of console arena shooters, that I'll get a majority vote on hate 'em. I hope I do. Else I'll be very disappointed. Personally, I do indeed hate them: it's bad enough losing to another team (especially if I'm not having any fun in the game), but when they get toys (abilities, weapons, whatever) to give them an even greater advantage over me, that's just not fair, I'm going to get buttplundered even more. But Tarty, I hear you cry, aren't you the very same Tartan 118 who likes ordnance drops in Halo 4? Yes, yes I am. Ummmm. Difference being, I'm familiar enough with Halo's sandbox to counter (or at least know how to) whatever toys the enemy is gifted. Whereas in -blam!-ing Call of Duty or whatever, you just get insta-powned by whatever bullets, bombs or dogs the enemy gets, with no chance to fight back. SHIELDS. Shields make the difference, I guess. I dunno.

  • Hate them. They encourage camping. The sound of "killing spree" etc was enough of a reward for me.

Killstreaks are not unfair nor unbalanced. When customizable killstreaks were introduced in MW2, I shit my pants because it was so awesome picking what you want to destroy the enemies. It was awesome playing a CoD game with not just a 3, 5, and 7 killstreak for once. It made the game even more fast paced and insane. IMO, the best killstreak in MW2 was the Harrier strike. It shot down helicopters and was strong. The nuke however ruined part of the fun as most people camped for it and boosted for it. If there wasn't a nuke, the game would have been so much better. The only downside was the amount of killstreaks that are on the same map at the same time. It gets ridiculous when there's an AC130, 2 Harriers, couple UAVs, Chopper Gunner, and a EMP all at the same time. And there is a way to defend yourself from killstreaks. Its called the Stinger, RPG, AT-4, Javelin and Cold-Blooded perk. I always have a Anti-Killstreak class ready to go in case things get crazy. Since none of my dumbass teammates ever shoot down the killstreaks, I always gotta be the guy that does. The Harrier was also another alternative as it shot down Pave Lows, Chopper Gunners, and Attack Helicopters. The MW2 Riot Shield was also indestructible from the Harrier gun, Attack Helicopter gun, and Pave Low guns. Get the attention of one of these with the Riot Shield and it will concentrate its fire on you only while you take no damage.

    • I think that if there are going to be killstreaks in a game, they should be map pickups. The way they work in COD basically make it so if you get any high level streak you win.

    • I hate them. Why? Because they cause people to camp and play like assholes.

    • I prefer a Dominion-style reward. Hold an objective, win ammo/weapons.

      • It depends on the type of Kill streak and how easily it's earned. I think the Ordnance system in Halo 4 should be tuned so that only killing without dying gives you ordnance. Like say I went 5 kills without a death. You get a tier 3 ordnance weapon: Needler, powerups, pulse rifle thingy. Killing frenzy gets you a tier 2 weapon: sword, shotgun, gravity hammer, sniper rifle, sticky detonator . 15 kills without a death gets you a tier 1 ordnance weapon: beam rifle, binary rifle, rocket launcher, incineration cannon, fuel rod gun. I think a system as described above would make players try and not die, rather than just blindly rush in and get as many kills as possible so they can get a weapon.

Any advantage based on the kills you have in a match takes from the competitive edge of the game. In CoD, it's killstreaks. You get a handful of kills and boom! You're set to have an easier time killing even more. It's like the game says, "Hey bro, I see you've been working hard to get a few kills this life. Here, deploy this, and it will rack up kills for you, no aiming required! What's that? That chopper killed a few more enemies for you? SWEET! Here's another bonus item to deploy, even though you haven't actually shot at anything yourself since your first killstreak reward. Oh cool, that got you a few more kills. Here's a nuke. Go kill everyone in the game!" In Halo 4, it's ordnance drops. Unlike in CoD, this bonus comes from total kills and assists accrued in the match, regardless of how many lives it took you to get there. Plays out like so: "Hey there, little one. I see that you've finally gotten your fourth kill (and a couple of assists!). I know you've died 20 times so far and have no idea what's going on with this map, but here's a rocket launcher. Go get 'em, slugger." Oh how the mighty have fallen, where we had to know the map and time things for power weapons. Now if we derp around long enough, one will just be given to us. And then that little derp can just rocket the guy who's been out-BRing everyone the whole game, no contest.

Stupid a shit. Honestly can't believe how long I played MW2 for with friends just dicking around with annoying killstreak combos to piss people off. So many times I got the nuke and we started throwing the match to start losing so we could use it at the end. Ah the rage. Still though, I hate what CoD has become and how 343 was clearly influenced by it.

MW came out when? It took me 2 weeks upon first seeing a killstreak to realize this... Its about -blam!-ing time the rest of you woke up. Shit.

          • Honestly I think only CoD 4 and WaW got it right (with the exception of dogs). Kill streaks are more of a CoD entity to me and don't belong in other games. If kill streaks are regulated then I'm okay with them, but if they become over the top like MW2 and onward I hate them.

          • I think MP games would be more competitive if the underdog received an advantage. To your point, the better team is already at the advantage. Something to boost the losing team has the potential to make the match more exciting. Only winning is more fun than losing by one kill.

          • I don't really like them much either, but BLOPS II had the best implementation. The scorestreaks were legitimately hard to get and points from offensive streaks didn't stack. Only support actions like UAV assists would count. You couldn't unleash a bunch of attack choppers based on one good airstrike.

          • The only killstreaks I'm okay with are the ones that require player skill to be used effectively. Halol 4 ordinance drops introduced too much randomness and it was stupid that in a game I could get 4 of them and only have the needler as a viable option, but someone on the enemy team gets a incinerator cannon and solos.

Meh, indifferent. I can see it both ways. I like getting rewarded for doing well, but don't like getting curb stomped even more for doing badly/having a shit team. That said I haven't been playing enough shooter multiplayer lately to care enough either way.

          • Kill streaks promote selfishness and camping, I prefer score streaks out of the two.

          • Players shouldn't be awarded for farming kills by spawn camping with an SMG. They should be awarded for assisting the team.

Kill streaks are not balanced and cannot be. Giving those who are already performing far better a major gameplay advantage is stupid. One of the many reasons I play Battlefield over CoD. :-)

            • I dunno, getting shot by Binary Rifles while I have the pick of the litter between a speed boost, a needler, and 2 plasma grenades is pretty fucking annoying
