So Bungie.net's nearly 15-year-old Seti@home team appears to have recently got an award for being in the top 25% of teams with regards to average credit.
The thing is, the bulk of that is carried by two users (Prototape and myself). On top of that, the entire modern history was generated by only six members.
Now I'm not saying you should feel obligated to help, but I think it would be cool if, given the size of this community, more people helped with this. I could see us easily making it into the higher tiers.
In case you don't know, SETI@home is a distributed-computing program that lets you use some of your unused processor time to help interpret the mountains of data SETI is taking in about the universe. You're basically helping them find out if anyone up there is shouting at us. It's pretty non-intrusive and you have full control over how much of your processing power it's allowed to use. It will yield to other programs automatically (meaning you don't have to plan what you're running ahead of time), but it defaults to a max of 100%, so if you don't want your computer going full-speed 24/7 you can set the processor usage to low values (I keep mine at 50% and I can't event tell it's running).
Per foman's recommendation, we're forming a (bungie.net) group for this team. We have guides to getting the program working, joining our team, and how to make the most of your contribution. I assume we'll also have discussion of space stuff once things get rolling.

Don't be shy, people.

I'm in.

How much data (GBs) does it use?

Thanks to everyone that has joined recently! Our contribution rate has already doubled and it's still going up!

Edited by Prototape: 2/17/2014 8:56:38 AMMy scan/completion ratio is off the charts, 1v1me. In all seriousness though, it's been a fun experience even though I don't actively do anything aside from lending them a little processing power. It's a bit more than scanning signals for possible life, it's a cool experiment in progress of pooling computers over a network to collectively process files, so it's a fun concept either way. Plus I like the screen saver. I'm kind of in shock that we're in the top 25% though considering its activity. Some of the other groups have been doing this longer than we have with more resources, so that's pretty awesome.

Cannot remember for the life of me if it was the Jumpers or MOAP but we had one back in the day. GJJ got me involved with it. Great program but I am not on my comp enough anymore.

Edited by FoMan123: 2/17/2014 6:09:36 PMCongrats! I've been a pretty active user on this site for almost 8 years and had no idea this group existed. It'd be helpful if you gave some information and links as to how to help, how to get the software, how to join the Bungie."com" group, etc. You should also start a SETI@home group here on Bnet as a place to contain the information and for users to congregate. I'd join it. Considering that Bungie has indicated many times that it has a big interest in the science of outer space, and many Bungie fans tend to share those interests, I'd think that with some additional promotion and visibility, this could really become a big deal.

This is very cool. Congratulations, guys.

We have a team? I'll be there!

Edited by UphillMercury: 2/17/2014 6:37:35 PMI didn't even know we had a group for this. I'm signing up now.
Also, SETI Live is another horribly under-utilized SETI initiative where you look through visual depictions of radio signals looking for discernible patterns. Definitely something to consider as well.
Edited by kgj: 2/17/2014 5:55:44 PMdownloaded but now i have to restart my computer :/ wellll i'll do it in a few hours XD [seti should be surprised at a 300 foot tall mutant dinosaur helping them out] uuup and running!

Can you use your GPU to do it?

Nice award for bungie.com.

Edited by Fridge Gnome: 2/17/2014 1:24:01 PMI never knew Bungie had a team. I've been on OCNs team this whole time.
