Benefits were extended in 2008 and are set to expire today. Unemployment benefits are provided to those who are looking for work and can be withdrawn if criteria are not met. It is expected that this will cause a drop in the unemployment rate, since those who lose benefits may become frustrated and stop looking for work-- thus removing them from the unemployment figures. President Obama has called for an extension, once Congress returns from its recess.
Opponents of an extension say that the unemployment rate has gone down, people should have planned for the expiration and gotten jobs by now, and that benefits make people too dependent on government. Supporters counter that the rate is still at a historically high level, jobs are still hard to find, and the basic support provided by benefits wouldn't discourage people from striving for a higher standard of living. Opponents also state that benefits only add to the deficits, since they are expected to cost $25 billion. Supporters say that government stimulus has helped the economy grow.
Either way, the fight over benefits will only add to the war that is sure to be waged over the debt ceiling when Congress returns from recess.

Edited by IchEsseKinder: 12/28/2013 6:16:31 PMOh no! People have to be productive members of society! Oh so how terrible! Trust me, it's not hard to find a job. If I was able to get multiple calls at the age of 18 (with no working experience) then anybody can. All it takes is to dress appropriately, talk maturely, and print out attractive resumes/cover letters. Clinton actually did good with creating TANF but it has now become the opposite of what it was intended. Now people who simply are lazy take advantage of it which costs the people who do need it (they may have a job but need an extra push) get punished. Rework the sytem so the lazy don't get it. Simple enough.

I don't see the option where it should've been expired long ago. Too many people are just flat out lazy, there are plenty of jobs out there, yeah it might not be the perfect job or one you want but life is rarely perfect suck it up and grow a pair.
-
Good, what a bunch of filthy bums... Send them to the labor camps!!
-
Opponents of an extension say that...people should have planned for the expiration and gotten jobs by now
Stupid jobless fucks, not planning to get a job. How lazy do you get, not getting a job by now? It's not like the job market sucks or anything.
-
It's tough, for a lot of people, work is tough to come by. Being in software development, I've found the opposite. While looking, I noticed that nearly all the jobs were IT, Medical, or Software. In MN, when the mines shut down, put tens of thousands out of work, they had a program that would extend your unemployment as long as you were in college full time, allowing people to train for a more in-demand job. Always thought that was a pretty good solution.

8 billion people dont give a shit.

Liberals are ruining free enterprise and America. Cheers.
-
Good, now they will have an incentive to better their lives. Temporary unemployment benefits should be temporary.
-
Dumbest argument ever.
Opponents of an extension say that the unemployment rate has gone down, people should have planned for the expiration and gotten jobs by now, and that benefits make people too dependent on government.
You are on unemployment because there aren't any jobs. I've been actively looking to switch jobs for 13 months. There isn't that much out there. When I go on the various job boards and look for MBA level jobs, all that comes up for San Diego are managers for those Cell Phone Kiosks. The market sucks, and the only people who are debating it are those who have never looked for work, or haven't looked lately.
-
Guess now they finally have some motivation to find a job.
-
This isn't going to help, the mess is too deep already and there's still too many people leeching off of those that are stolen from.
-
Edited by Le Dustin xLil D: 12/28/2013 7:03:09 PMBecause public housing, Medicaid, and welfare are cheaper alternatives when these people lose everything they have? There is no argument here, it's just a bunch of people who further demonstrate a lack of knowledge of how to run an economy.

sucks to suck

In Canada we pay a small tax like 10 dollars a pay-check, to EI. You have to work 800 hours in the year to qualify to get them. And they only last at a maximum of a 10 months. You cant receive benefits if you haven't worked the hours. You get maybe 85% of your max wages. They are cracking down at seasonal workers off for the winter, but why? Who is going to leave their job making 40,000-80,000 a year to work at mcds for minimum wage. Who is going to spend thousands to train these people for them to leae after three months?
-
inb4 people not understanding that market systems always create a labor surplus
-
This is gonna hurt a lot of people with seasonal jobs, like concrete, construction and stuff
-
Where is the desire to work if you get paid to not work. Seems pretty simple to me.
-
Wow you guys really are stupid fcks aren't you.

Edited by Deleted User: 12/28/2013 4:54:00 PMWhat. A Lot of people don't understand is when they state they created jobs, most of them are part time jobs on the service industry with no benefits. So taking them away is bad because when people cant find jobs and have a family to feed they will do whats necessary to keep their family fed. Thus you create criminals that are willing to do anything to feed their family. They get caught then your spending millions in the justice system to not only charge them but to put them in jail. You take the costs of the courts and the penal system to say 50-70 percent of the people who will become criminals because of this. It will cost triple the amount that those benefits cost. Not to mention its pretty shitty considering most have worked and paid taxes to have those benifits.

Awesome. More desperate people = more crime. But your government doesn't care.
-
They were lucky to get free shit in the first place.
-
They should expire. It's not that people can't find jobs, it's that they can't find jobs that payed as much as their old job.
