PC vs. PS4 at $400
Can a PC be built for $400 to equal the power of the PS4? If so, please post build w/cost.

7 Replieshttp://pcpartpicker.com/p/2oPO3 Once you throw in the extra $40 from tax (10% tax rate I believe it is, correct me if I'm wrong) and the extra $50 for a year of PSN, the price of the PS4 goes up to ~$490. This computer regularly is $533, but once you do all of the rebates, it brings the price down to $442, which is the same price as the PS4 (because of tax).

4 RepliesI'm surprised the pc master race hasn't jumped on to school me. =P I know games are great on the right pc. Driving's great on the right car. To get all the good stuff you need to drop oodles and oodles of cash. You're not going to see the top games playing at 1080p and 60fps on a cheap $400 computer. One, it's not optimized since pc gamers have different builds and components. They are expected to foot the bill for new advancements. Two, Microsoft and Sony obviously don't buy at retail. Then in the spirit of competition they play chicken until the reveal to disclose the cost and that keeps it low. Unless someone would like to impart some wisdom here, consoles will push best performance for your buck. And right now best value on the dollar is PS4. Am I wrong?

However, you should be thankful you even have the choice - in Australia, there's no such thing as a sub-$800 gaming PC, while consoles cost around $100 more than in the US.

I highly doubt you could build a PC equivalent of a PS4 for the same price unless you scrape the bottom of barrel. Plus a PS4 is better anyway.

1 ReplyI doubt that a $400 PC would have the same processing power as a PS4; most pre-built gaming PCs are upwards of $1000 (Granted, the up-front price will be lessened by the fact that PC games are often way cheaper, not even mentioning all the little options like free to play MMOs and flash games. If you pick and choose parts on a PC you build yourself (which I wouldn't attempt unless you're a tech expert,) it might come out a little cheaper; but probably not by much. For the $400, I'd say the PS4 is the better choice (although good luck finding anything at all so close to Christmas.)

2 RepliesIt doesn't work like that. You initially spend much more on the PC however it is infinitely cheaper in the long term because of the games. I just bought 3 AAA titles for well under $10 each off steam. So compare the $20 I payed to the $180+ you would pay for console versions. You get the point.

You'd also get a powerhouse of a working/design machine as well, you know... The PC I built for design doubled as an epic gaming machine.

Like most of this guys said, it might be a little more expensive to get a good gamer pc but in the long run is cheaper than the new consoles, also you don't pay to play online and you get a lot of good offerts of AAA games and you end up saving more than with consoles.

Edited by Orion: 12/23/2013 5:29:29 PMOf course not. You must remember that a PC is a PC too, not just a gaming machine. So naturally it's going to be more expensive. But it works out cheaper to buy a PC built for gaming, than it is to buy a decent PC and a console separately.

There's no point right now. The console are more powerful than most things at this price (Most, not all). It would be better to wait a while for PC hardware to advance more, so you get more "bang for buck".

It would be a waste of money and you would miss out on the whole reason for getting a gaming PC instead of a console. Better to play on a next gen console for a few years for a bargain price then buy a good PC when there is an actual worthy upgrade in graphics worth the extra money.

17 RepliesBoth current generation consoles are built like computers. If you spend about $15-$30 less than either console price, you can make an equally powerful computer. With sales and such, you could make a slightly better one.
