"Traveler" implies he moves from system to system. I think it finds a developed sentient species and endows them with power to be masters of their own domain fostering peace, unity, and prosperity. A Golden Age. After its work is done it leaves. I think the other alien races chased the Traveler down in greed after its power. Humans took a stand with the Traveler and were nearly wiped out. The Traveler made a sacrifice. Instead of moving on and fleeing its enemies it stayed to protect the species under assault to prevent extinction. Now after beating the drum for years, the aliens have weakened the traveler. Guardians must now venture into the wild, regain their former glory, and smite the villains gaining independence and the Traveler's freedom. That's my theory at least. :)
