So how did they manage to do motion capture for humanoids with four arms? I guess the secondary arms might just be added in digitally, without props. But even then, did the suits need to be modified to show the computer where to put the arms?
I'm looking for a vague answer from a Bungie employee...

There are three ways I know of: 1) They limit the animation of the second set of arms to less complicated actions. This is quite common as it is slightly easier if the second set of arms do less work than the mocapped ones. 2) They act out the same sequence twice, one with the first pair of arms and the other for the second pair of arms. This tends to be used if the four armed character touches something with more than two hands or performs complex actions with all their hands. 3) The second set of arms mimic the first set. More commonly used for background animations such as a distant battle.

Isn't it obvious? They strapped a baby/child actor to the chest of the mocap actor and adjusted its size for the game.

I was wondering about this too. But more so about how they would get the momentum and dynamics right for the extra arms in conjunction with the rest of the body. Making it all look natural/realistic definitely seems like a hurdle, even with the help of something like Natural Motion.

There are two possible ways that I can think of: 1) Do standard mocap, don't allow the actor to lower their arms all the way to make room for the other two. Add in the other two by hand afterwards. 2) Don standard mocap, don't allow the actor to lower their arms all the way to make room for the other two. Do another standard mocap with the same body motions, but different arm movements. Add the second set of arms into the original mocap data by hand afterwards. Both take a bit more time than standard animation, which is part of the reason we so many humanoid aliens in games and movies. Just adding extra arms is a lot of work, imagine trying to do mocap for something like this.

They hired this guy.

I think just getting most the main body movements down and then animating the second pair of arms later still does wonders compared to trying to do everything from scratch or from a simple reference video. It's not like they're going to perfectly fit the model over the motion capture people anyways.

lol that pic never gets old

I'd say they'd mocap the whole human body, then add the extra set manually. There isn't much the second pair of arms actually do, so I think it'd be all right to fudge it a bit.

This would be a great mail sack question. I'll up vote it if you put it over there.

Well, the captains and the vandals have four arms, but the dregs have only two. In other words, I have no idea.
