Speculation on Comet DLC
This thread is 100% speculation based almost exclusively on the word "Comet"
Ok so allow me to explain my train of thought with (some-what) concise bullet points instead of a wall of text! -The Activision/Bungie contract mentions 4 DLC/Expansion packs each named Comet. These are set to follow each of the 4 Destiny titles. The fact that each Destiny game will be followed by a visit from a comet got me thinking... -The events of Destiny's universe may not only be affected by this comet but it may very well begin and end with the comet. -Comets have been seen as a sort of mystical / godly omen throughout our history so I feel like it really fits the feel of the game. -It appears to me that the Traveler is in some sort of Hibernation/recovery state ever since it "sacrificed itself to save us" and now it "still hangs where it made its last stand..... keeping silent watch". Perhaps the comet has been assisting in the process of mending the traveler on each pass through our system, preparing it? -I'm going to say that this is probably referring to a Comet that actually exists. I'm going to take a guess here and say it may be Halley's Comet which has an orbit that takes between 75 and 76 years. (aw darn.. SO CLOSE to 77!) --When I first watched the Law of the Jungle Trailer I had a sense that the father was the Hunter depicted in the trailer and now he was passing on knowledge to his child after the events of the 1st game, preparing the future generation of guardians. edit: According to the video's description ^this^ is in fact false. The child is the Hunter. Moving on... -(a bit of a tangent but I found it interesting he was reading out of a book since in the Pathways out of Darkness vidoc we see that the missions are broken down into chapters/books.) -Destiny is a story of humanity, not just one protagonist. Stretching out the story over 75 year increments would allow for an evolution of technology over the series so that Bungie will be able to innovate the class structures, weapons, vehicles, etc. I think it really opens up possibilities for the future titles and prevent them from feeling stale and repetitive (looking at you COD). -Considering how Destiny takes place in a persistent world I think we should expect Destiny 2 to essentially take place in the same "place" as Destiny but after 75 years (if Im right about halley's comet) of civilization's advancement it will look and feel quite different. Now that I think about it, If Destiny didn't take place over a lengthy amount of time I wouldn't feel like it really portrayed humanity coming back from the brink and taking the solar system back in a believable way. That would take hundreds of years. So I just rambled off a few thoughts I've had regarding this "Comet" and some implications it may or may not have. If you bothered to read it all I thank you. I've been meaning to sit down and do this for a few weeks now but I just now got around to it. Probably spent too much time on it but oh well! Thoughts? Criticisms? (I'm sure there are others who have had similar thoughts in the community and unfortunately I cannot keep up on this stuff as well as I wish I could. If you know of any other speculation regarding Comet please post a link.)
