Just saw this on net. Comparison on game's maps. Do you think Destiny needs huge maps on each planet, space station, spaceships, etc? And even larger one on Earth?
Is too much to explore a good thing for the taken? Some gamers are afraid of "too much exploration" because this same exploration becomes more a responsibility for them rather than a feature. The less exploration they make, the more important items, or secrets, or hidden quests, or possibilities, they will have. So they feel the need to explore the current map entirely before moving on to the next one, even if they want to go ahead already.
From the games shown there, the only one i truly know is WoW (got my explorer tabard). And it does takes time to cross those maps mounted or running. And WoW's map is a tiny little thing comparing to others there.
Just for the record, Elder Scrolls: Daggerfall has the largest recorded gamespace, nearly 250 miles wide, or 62.000 mi². But like Bethesda already said, "the size doesn't necessarily compare from game to game. In other words, how fast you can move across the world has a lot to do with how big it seems."
The two maps:

So gentlemen, does size matter?

I want them to be as big as they can possibly be, the more there is to explore, the better.
