Is University worth it?

I'm at that moment of time where I am really considering university for next year. I have been slightly put of by the £30,000 fee because of the rise in the UK and all the rest of it. I am hoping to go to study Film Production, Can anyone suggest it is really worth it, the experience, can you get a job in the media industry other than going to University for the degrees? The education because it comes at such a heavy price. Although that isn't a big concern. I was also wondering what did you enjoy more. Living at home or living at university can anyone advise what did you prefer? Thanks

It all depends. Do you WANT to go to college? I know in the industry of 3D artists they look at the demo reel and quality of work the person has done before they look at the resume and letter of introduction. If they don't like the work shown, they simply scrap it altogether. If they REALLY like your work, they don't even care if you never been to college because you obviously have the experience. It all depends if you want to take the easy path of knowledge by going to college or seeking out other means. Remember that way back when they didn't have no fancy colleges to teach them film. They picked up on tricks from others or learned from trial and error.

    • No. Just go to a community college first, or a junior college. You're getting the same exact education, only for much, much cheaper. For America, let's say the average tuition of a high profile university is about $30,000/semester. You can get the same exact quality education at a junior college or community college for less than $1,000/semester. If you go right away after college, from personal experience, you're going to hate it. If you go after getting your prerequisites done, then you'll enjoy it.

    • Generally these days most jobs require you to go to university and it would give you a great boost in your career options

Yes, if it's a technical major. Most other things are less useful and you could get away without a degree. But I'm getting paid 14k per year to go, so I'm kinda biased.

    • Here's a great debate on this very subject. TLDR: It depends on your field. You might have a better shot with making a kickass portfolio and using that rather than a colligate degree, but I would talk to some hiring managers in the field first before you go with that.

I'm not sure how in demand film production is. I would assume it's either hit or miss. College is only worth it if the degree you're wanting to get is in high demand and it pays well (or pays good enough). Most jobs today require some form of college degree, and the retards who say otherwise are sadly mistaken. But the biggest mistake that people make when going to college is getting the "hobby" degrees. They get degrees in liberal arts, philosophy, anthropology etc and when they get out of college, they throw a hissy fit and complain about not having a job. I mean what did you expect? And btw OP, I just found this website, and apparently a film major is one of the worst-paying degrees out there with an unemployment rate of 12.9 percent.

    • It's becoming a costly rite of passage for some. For others, it is invaluable time and what is learned is vital.

    • If you're studying something valuable (ie STEM) then yes it is worth it. Otherwise you are spending money you don't have to fund a hobby.
