Should National Defense Spending be Cut? (US Citizens)
Simply a question I'm curious about. Do you think the National Defense Budget (Military, Defense Department) budget be cut? Why?

Stop producing battleships and jets? Lessen the amount of troops we train? Stop funding experiments to better our military force? To me, maybe we can cut a few things but i dont think it should be a drastic cut as some people think. I think its important to have a strong military. Instead of cutting the military, why dont we stop sending money over to the middle east, this way they can hate us for free?

1 ReplyYes, we are very inefficient and just blow lots of money. 1 trillion is an absurd amount of money to spend on yearly basis with little to no gains.

1 ReplyEdited by Quantum: 7/25/2013 5:56:01 AMYes, they waste too much money on projects like the F35, and Congress makes stupid decisions on military hardware, everywhere from 300 unnecessary tanks, to considering the Gavin APC in the first place. I don't think this Congress can be topped in terms of stupidity in military decisions. Invest more money into military research projects; everyone wins.

No. What needs to be cut are the contracts that spend ridiculously large amounts of cash on tiny things (e.g. $65 for a bolt). If we reformed our military spending, we would have an infinitely more efficient and powerful army. But no, that's too smart of an idea. As for the actual budget, no, I don't believe military spending should be reduced. If anything, we should quick spending so much on our ridiculous social programs.

2 RepliesNo, infact we should increase it. 99.9% of our tax dollar to our glorious military. We can start military programs like Ballerinas and Bullets where female soldiers engage the enemy in choreographed dance routines. We can fire solid gold bullets at our enemies. We can field tanks that size of city blocks that contain all the comforts of home. Our pilots will fly only the best stealth luxury jets. We can develop energy weapons and nuclear artillery. It'd be fun guys.

Should be cut. And that means personnel budget too. We spend almost 200 billion a year on pay, healthcare, and retirement.

We are spending buckoo on air conditioned tents in Afghanistan. Just the other day there was a newspaper article talking about how tax payers are paying for triple digit homes for senior brass. Even if there wasn't we are spending more on our military than most other nations combined.

3 RepliesNo. The DoD can't react properly to budget cuts and I'd rather not drill without pay. Maybe if they got their shit together and stopped wasting so much money on pointless things and buildings, then we could talk about a reduction in spending.

1 ReplyPeople don't know what it actually pays for. The lion's share of that particular budget pays for the pensions for the retirees. To cut it means cutting what we pay our vets.

9 RepliesWell, a few projects aren't needed anymore, especially since the US is getting out of the middle east, defense probably should trim the fat. As should a couple other programs that aren't really needed or are detrimental.

However, cutting its size or reducing funding to other things that they need or can use is completely out of the question, especially when the jihadists are infesting more and more places and Iran and North Korea have nukes.
