Religions in Destiny

In the Destiny Universe, Space Magic is a thing. It's Magic. Straight-up, unadulterated magic. It hasn't been presented as "plasmids" or "fire-ball-shooting technology", just magic. How do you think the people of The City would react to this? I think it's pretty obvious that, when confronted with a source of magic, there would be a religion (or several) that would spring up. I think especially Warlocks would be highly likely to practice or at least believe in a religion surrounding the Traveler. So, what do you guys think? Should religion, if not play a role, at least be mentioned in a Universe where it would most definitely exist?

Well considering that two of the known factions are named after religiously symbolic figures, Osiris and 7 Seraphs, I'd say there is a pretty good chance there will be some religious elements as part of Destiny's lore. What is interesting to me is I wonder has much the religions the faction names reflect will affect the back story for each faction. There are vast differences between the polytheistic Egyptian religion and the monotheistic based Judeo/Christian worldviews. ...and regardless of what you think about the topic of religion: crutch for the weak, gives significance to our entire existence, or are just ambivalent about it, having this element present is only reflective of what will always exist in society. Religions come and go, some endure from eons of time but some facet of society will always develop a system of religious belief and significance to there existence. Since Destiny is a dynamic universe, one where our community represents all of humanity in its various evolved forms (another interesting topic of conversation), I think including relgious elements is appropriate. I think you make a good point about Warlocks too. The underlying basis of most if not all Asian martial arts disciplines is religion and developing your skills as a fighter has as much if not more to do with developing some type of spiritual connection or understanding rather than simply mastering the physical actions.

  • Something a lot of you aren't understanding is that your own views and personal thoughts about religion aren't really relevant in this conversation. If you have a personal opposition to the institution of religion, fine, whatever, I couldn't care less. But this discussion is about what would and should be in destiny. And, if you don't have faith in Bungie to handle religion in a tasteful, nonintrusive manner, then I don't know why you're posting on this forum to begin with.

    • So who's going to be Destiny's version of Richard Dawkins...Dick Rawkins author of the Run-Down New York Times best sellers "The Traveler Delusion" and "The Unreality of Space Magic"...

      • I mentioned it earlier in another forum. I see the traveler possibly being a god of some sort. Does it seem legit? I don't see why not

          • I don't think there is a religon anymore. Its 700 years into the future and something almost killed humanity. And if there is a religon it will be focust on the traveler. And I think everebody will be on the same side.

            • The only religion I want to see is tied to specific factions (like maybe FWC could be a religious cult).

                  • I always thought the traveler was just a big machine that emitted a special kind of energy. It's not like magic magic it only appears to be.

                        • I say it's highly likely that certain groups within the city may have formed religions. Humanity has been struck down, is protected by a nearly omnipotent volleyball, and has been introduced to arcane space energies. If people can form religions around a dude supposedly healing the sick, dying from a certain grisly ancient execution method and rising from the dead 3 days later it's a near certainty someone would make a religion based around the events in Destiny. Maybe some even worshiping the Traveler as a god. Wouldn't mind having to defend the City from a demented death cult either.

                          • Religion in Destiny would make the universe feel much more alive even if the concept of it seems flawed to many people... The video above kind of talks about this well...

                          • Considering the Internet worships cats and anime more zealously than the most religious people, I would expect them to worship magical floating ball above city.

                          • Dead Orbit seems somewhat religious in nature, as well as Osiris.

                          • If you were to look up what seraphs originated from you could probably argue that their is some kind of religious influence in the making of Destiny... Now that I think about it maybe the factions are the religions in Destiny

We're talking about the last human city..., ever. If the concept of this game revolves around humanities desperate survival on the edge of total extinction I would think that humans would completely transcended any and all constraints that serve to separate including race and religion. It seems like with the event of a common enemy and in the face of total annihilation people would set aside any all difference and come together for a common goal. In my opinion guardians will be seen as heros and legends but not Gods for idol worship. Guardians will represent the legend inside of everyone.
