Unwell on day of marathon: Why I did it anyway

Having completed my challenge I wanted to share the story, which I feel is worth reading. If you would like to help please share it as widely as you can. This thread is a follow-up to this. Your response as a community was really positive and for that I am thankful #SeventhColumn *** P.S. Arbitor5, an awesome guy who watched the event in person, has some T-shirts (one of which is my super-rare HFCS T-shirt). He'll be giving some away to bnetters (I'll let him explain more), so make sure that if you decide to contribute you note your username somewhere in the donation message (your unique ID, not SecondClass) Thanks :) Edit 12th July: Seeing as any bnetters that contributed post-offer were anonymous and/or told me they were not worried about swag, and the donation page expires really soon, I feel no guilt in saying Arbitor5 can keep my HFCS tee. It is the very least he deserves, after being such a great-awesome-amazing guy!

  • That was very selfless of you, Tom. And you showed great dedication to the cause. But I guess it's fair that people know the whole story. In that original thread, several people mentioned relations who suffered (or could possibly suffer) from Endo. It's scary really how widespread this disease really is, considering how drastically it is undertreated. With any luck, that will change one day in the near future.

    • Congratulations on seeing this through, I can't imagine how exhausting it must have been. I'll bookmark your page and make a donation tomorrow.

    • So you decided to swim in order to raise money for a organization that is trying to help women that have their body hurt themselves. Meh I was expecting better, but I guess that isn't bad. Personally if it doesn't kill you then there are bigger things to be concerned about.

      • And to those that pledge: I really appreciate the sentiment, but I am wary of such promises and will explain why. Many people have privately promised me that they will donate more or later, when a pay packet arrives or whatever, but they inevitably forget (if they were sincere) or later find they cannot due to the complexity of their lives. Often such promises achieve nothing. This is not a slight against anyone in particular (some could be really sincere and on the ball), but it is a good opportunity for me to give an impassioned rant directed at people in general. If you really want to help the best thing you can do is what you can with what you have. This doesn't just mean money. Donating money is a really big ask. It is very rare that I donate to charitable causes, and I certainly do not expect it of the majority of people that see this -- particularly when much of the audience so far will have been young people, like myself, who are accumulating debt, and have their own financial concerns to deal with. If you truly want to help the best thing you can do is something with action. Raise awareness. Use your social networks, for example. A small percentage of those that see it will offer something to the cause. A greater portion will be more aware and educated of the issue, planting a seed that might one day also be a force for change. This will all be, in part, a result of your efforts. So don't apologize if you can't donate, don't make promises you may not be able to keep, just do something, anything, and you will, in some small way, make a difference. Thanks :)

      • I really didn't need to hear about the diarrhoea thing, Tom. But, uh, that was really cool of you. I'm glad you didn't pass out in the pool or anything. Well done!

Nice going Tom. From a former swimming coach, not only will I say 500 lengths is by no means a small feat for anyone, but Im encouraged to know that you stuck with it even with the hadicap. Im deeply touched that you did this and Im honored that this can happen even on Bnet where the amount of troll threas far outweighs decent ones. You did a good thing. I donated $10, however you can keep the Tshirt ;)

          • Amazing. 250 laps. Even having done a marathon and training for an ironman I can't even fathom the willpower and endurance required to do that, especially in a sickened state...
