Who is The Traveler?

Since its announcement, there have been many details release regarding Destiny, and what sort of Universe we the player will be able to explore. The basic premise for the story has also been explained, and as well we have learned a little bit about who we can be, and what challenges we may come to face on our journey. Yet the greatest mystery remains completely unexplained and that is, just who is The Traveler? Of course this mystery will remain a well guarded one, yet surprisingly there do not seem to be as many attempts at decoding this mystery of The Traveler as I might have guessed. Even if all we have to ride off of is blind speculation, somewhere along the road someone is bound to come close to the truth. So, why don't we use this thread to share ideas and theories as to who the The Traveler might be, and just where and or when it might come from? My theory is quite out there and based off of absolutely nothing, but it seemed like an interesting possibility, so I suppose I'll share... When the Earth was under attack, and began to fall, one lone hero/scientist figure escaped into deep space in order to establish a defense from a safe distance. Hidden away in seclusion in some unknown or uncharted territory, this person formulated a weapon that was a hybrid of human and alien technologies that may have been discovered on the planet he had landed on. After spending years designing what would be the white sphere we've all become familiar with, composed of mass amounts of advanced technology and energy, the machine possesses the ability to travel back in time only until a certain point. The designer of this tool/weapon now lives in a time where the Earth has been destroyed and humanity obliterated from existence. After completion of the tool/weapon/ or white sphere, the man travels back in time as far as he is able to, becoming one with the machine in the process to fully control it's strengths and abilities by forming somewhat of a symbiosis with the tech. The Traveler then does what it can to give humanity time and defense and to share in it's power. This then brings us to nearly the point in time in which Destiny takes places. Yeah, so probably way off course, but hey it's still fun to speculate! Now share your theories.
