Is transferring Destiny saves between Platforms possible?

There's going to be a interesting conundrum coming up for a lot of us since Destiny will be transitioning between multiple platforms from Microsoft and Sony most likely in 2014. Many of us will still have the 360 or the PS3 and if Destiny ships for the older consoles we'll most likely be playing it till the second generation of next gen consoles hit the market, due to the rule never buy first wave due to all the issues they inherently have at launch. So there you are six months into Destiny on your Xbox 360 or PS3 and now you've seen the signs and the PS4 and the Infinity(XBOX) is looking ready for purchase. Now for me personally I fall into the category of switching over to SONY this time out due to being tired of the yearly cost of XBL. So now I really have an issue because I would figure it would be easy for saves to be transfered in Destiny from the same platform console to it's newer iteration, but not between Sony and Xbox. So now I have a level 45 Titan on Xbox and I'm switching over to PS4, can you go through Bungie's servers and regain that character for the PS4? My first thought is no, of course not. You need to start over, but that might be something to look at as a developer down the road trying to cater to major platforms when creating characters on Destiny by pass coding them individually so consumers can have the option of switching over to another venue and taking their information with them. Anyways It was sort of bugging me this morning since I'm up in the air on what Console I'm buying in 2014 and the loss of time while playing on my current console.

  • Sorry to burst your bubble but you will still be paying a yearly fee on ps4. Ps4 online services aren't free like they were on PS3

    • It will be possible because your save is on the Bungie server

    • I totally agree with the idea of data transfers cross console. It in some cases would be good for both companies as in people who want the transfers are most likely going to or already have the opposing businesses console and are going to buy the game anyway creating revenue for both companies. The idea of data transfers would give the buyers a greater incentive to get a newer console since they don't have to fear starting over wouldn't have to go through the work of going through the game again and getting all their gear. This alone deters a lot of people from getting the newer gen games and consoles all together until far later when it seems everyone but them have one. The person either likes a console or not so not having the ability to transfer data cross platform won't change their mind on which console they will buy. Plus bungie is who holds all the player data and the servers and most of the things that make the game run so they do have a say in this matter and i have heard many statements saying that it is likely to happen in the near future. It would certainly stop that annoyance in the back of my head that i just left a day of my life and a fully geared character on an old gen console that I wont really use any more. All that time just, gone

    • Why not just get Destiny on the PS4, since Destiny probably wouldn't launch till 2014 and PS4 would have been out for a year and hopefully will have bugs worked out.I hope but Sony and MS do some kind of bundle for next gen and copy of Destiny. Win Win for everyone

      • Bump.... I'm rocking the 360, but would love to jump to the ps4 to join friends in the epic quest against darkness.

      • Triple Bump. From what I've read, the two major companies involved (Sony and MS) would have to agree to allow it. And since they are direct competitors, I doubt that would happen. However, never say never! I would love for this to happen so my wife and I can play with our friends on one console, and my dad on the other. Just thinking about all the time I would have to invest just to play with my dad scares me. I really do want to jump systems, for him, but I've got time invested and gear, items, stats, etc etc. But what we also need to remember, the PS exclusive items (Monte Carlo exotic I believe) won't transfer over to MS. At least not yet until everything is available for everyone then. So maybe that's when we will see a cross-over possibility?

      • Old thread, but STILL unconfirmed over 1 yr later! People are quick to assume NO. Yes, I know characters are linked to XBL/PSN account names. But why couldn't character stats transfer through your BNET account? They'll all be online anyway - level, gear, etc. GTA5 accounts can transfer like this. I'm still rocking a 360, but want a PS4 once price comes down a bit...would be tough to start over once that time comes. Latest I've found is this (4/28/14): He said that no decision has yet been made for those console owners who switch brands, meaning that a PS3 owner who buys and Xbox One might not be able to transfer their saves. "We don't have any plans to announce there right now. Traditionally that's been restricted by the platform [holders] themselves. We'll just have to wait and see where they go with that." http://www.polygon.com/2014/4/28/5653642/destiny-ps3-upgrade-next-gen-ps4-xbox-one-compatible-windows-pc

        • Between Xbox 360 and Project: Durango, as well as between PlayStation 3 and PlayStation 4, you probably can, but between Xbox and PlayStation? NO

        • Well that question is easy to answer: NO the ps consoles are owned by sony and the Xbox consoles are owned by microsoft, and seeing as those are major rivals in busyness they will almost never share something like cross platform data sharing.

        • It probably will, since the game stats would be saved over the Internet and very little would be saved on-disc. Also, does anyone know if saved games (where you are still playing the mission but you saved it in the middle) in campaigns are ever backed up online, or are they a disc-only save? Because if they are disc-only, then people would have no way of keeping their saved games when they changed platforms. Its not as critical as in-game rank or anything, as you can start a mission again easily enough, but depending on how long Destiny's missions are it could be a problem.

          • I hope so. Perhaps it would be possible to route the information through your B.net account in order to synch up your Sony and Microsoft online accounts.

I am equally concerned, OP, I too am eying the PS4, but the thought of having to redo all of my work in Destiny is a hard one, even if the game is as fun as it sounds. I'm still giving the Nextbox a chance, I'm waiting until after the reveal this month to decide, if they lower/remove monthly rates and will allow used games, I'll probably stay and Xbox fan. EDIT: Also it's probably killing DeeJ and the ninjas to see these threads since they have played Destiny (well at least some of the ninjas have) and probably know the answer to this question...

            • Given how much data Bungie has gathered as we played Halo in almost a decade since Halo2, and the previous statements that Destiny will be an online only game, I think it's very possible. Assuming of course that you have your PSN and XBL userids linked to your Bungie.net account. It all depends on how much data about your character that they store on their servers and if Sony or Microsoft prevent them from allowing console migration. It would simply be cloud saves for your character data, with Bungie.net as the cloud service in question.

            • We won't know until closer to launch just how cross platform the game is going to be. My money is currently riding on 360->nextbox only. and ps3 -> ps4 only. Each being tied to gammer tag / PSNID respectively. But only bungie can tell us for sure! It would be nice if the whole system was cross platform so we can go to friends place and play together even if they are on a different system...

              • I think sharing characters cross-gen is a possibility, since they will share the same online service. Not across different online services, though. Your Tiger Man's either Team MS or Team Sony, unfortunately, and I don't think they'll ever get to play together or even switch teams. :(

              • I am pretty sure that if either next gen console have any bugs or problems that the companies will replace them since they would be under warranty...
