How big and open do you think/hope Destiny will be?

Destiny has been equated to an MMO for the console, see this article, and one of the biggest gripes I have with MMO's is the faux-openness of the worlds. They usually have a safe hub area with some jungles or something outside with constantly respawning enemies (another thing I hate) for the player to explore and do missions. But the areas don't really feel open when you are confined, if I see mountains in the distance I should be able to walk to them and maybe find a quest there. I truly hope Destiny will let us explore those mountains. We can't take previous Bungie games as examples since they were mostly linear shooters, but some other games come to mind when thinking about "true" openness. Games like Skyrim and Just Cause 2 seem to understand that players want to explore their surroundings, but would this be the best fit for Destiny, or will we see environments more akin to MMO's? Borderlands is a shooter that seems a bit more open than others, but still feels confined to specific areas and there isn't much exploring to do. Although, I'm not sure what kind of game world would fit best with a FPS. Far Cry did the open world FPS pretty well, but once you add multiplayer everything changes. I for one just can't wait to see what Bungie surprises us with. I was just wondering about the community's opinions and if you think we will see something more like traditional MMO's or space Skyrim online. EDIT: An interesting idea came up that Destiny won't be played mainly from the disk, but from dedicated servers which would make the possibility of an open world game all the more probable. I think this could happen especially since the game is going to be strictly multiplayer and online 24/7 because of that the game would most likely have to run from a server. I was wondering how you thought this would affect the game, and in particular the openness of it.

  • Each "map" with no loading screens, interior spaces included, will be about 3km x 3km. (sause) That's 1.86mi x 1.86mi for us Americans. Coming from life in a small town, that's a lot of area to move around in.

  • It will be about 2 miles for each little segment and then I'm predicting there will be a place where you transition to the next area...all said in the artists at Bungie talking at GDC I think. Maybe there will be DLC packs where you can unlock new areas and planets. (Full of new maps and missions)

  • I think each planet in Destiny will probably have a main open area that's about one half the size of a continent in Planetside 2. An area that size seems small enough to be possible and large enough to prevent the game from getting too repetitive when we inevitably have to revisit each planet.

    • Before you all get carried away with the potential scope of the game. Just remenber it is restricted by the current generation of console. It is being released on both old and new so obviously its not going to be akin to skyrim with hundreds of players. It's just not possible.

      • I'm not sure as to where the thread went, but someone was 'building' a map of the hub city and the traveler and they the two was squeezed between an ocean and a mountain range. If this user created map is anything like the real one, these natural formations will be our initial boundaries. Maybe this area will be slightly larget than the total space of forgeword. Of course we'll be able to go interstellar and visit dungeons and what not. I personally think that each world that you fly to will be abou the size of the campaign mission "The Ark". Each of these worlds might have a couple of dungeons ranging from the size of Snow Bound all the way up to Standtrap. These dungeons could be multiple multi tiered allowing for lots of fun. I'm also fairly certain that we'll be able to dock derelict ships that are floating in space, that is of course after we fight through a battalion of alien ships(I'm guessing that these space areas are fairly easy on the game engine so they'll be huge). Alright, now I'm just going on a tangent but... hopefully we'll get to experience some time travel because of the Vex. How cool would it be to be fighting with futuristic guns and 'space magic' in late 1700s early 1800s New York. Alright I'm done now...

            • In order for Destiny to be any sort of success, it needs to be fully explorable. The only reason I am excited for it is because this is how it is being advertised. I am expecting, like Just Cause 2, if you see it you can go there. They also really need to nail down the vehicle mechanics: If the vehicles aren't fun to drive, especially in a world as large as this, it is going to be difficult to get into. I had this problem with borderlands, the dune buggie thing just wasn't all that fun, you couldn't drift nicely and you didn't really get a feel for the contraption itself. This being said Bungie succeeded beautifully with the vehicles in Halo, and i have faith that they will do the same here.

            • It has to be 10 times bigger than skyrim was and if there is 4 discs to come with it on an xbox 360 its possible. But if only there was an xbox with a blu-ray drive? http://www.gameinformer.com/b/news/archive/2013/02/25/microsoft-gearing-up-for-xbox-event.aspx

              • Judging from the little snippets of what I assume were Grognok being used at the end of the 'O Brave New World' documentary, I think its safe to say that the playable areas will be massive. Perhaps not 'planet-wide'... but massive. The editor behind that screen was using Grognok to paint, not hills, or roads but mountains, with what looked like incredible ease, so it seems theyve built Grognok to handle building huge areas of terrain with ease.

To be honest? If we're being ambitious and going with the "Bungie needs to make an absolutely amazing video game to even come close to following up Halo" mentality, I'd like to see 50 - 100 mi^2 of explorable land per planet. In reference to the picture above, assuming there's 7 planets explorable in this game (which I think is highly likely), that would put Destiny at a world (in total) with an area almost 9 times that of Vanilla WoW (80 mi^2), 33% bigger than Just Cause 2 (400 mi^2), and being just around 100 mi^2 larger than Test Drive: Unlimited (618 mi^2). In my opinion, this could be one of many "big things" that could push Destiny from "oh look... a Halo MMO" to something that could be really popular. e: That doesn't include all the Space areas you can travel through in your customizable ships, so keep that in mind. Also it doesn't factor in any aerial travel one could have on any given planet. However, I don't feel like measuring game worlds in volume (nor does anyone else, according to Google), so we'll stick with 700 mi^2 + Space for now.

                    • I'm looking for multiple sky rim sized worlds on every planet or moon you can visit. Because if you think about it this way say maybe 300,000 people were on at once in sky rim you would constantly be bumping into people and someone else will have completed every dungeon before you could.

Honestly, I don't care how big the areas are, I would much rather the areas be more dense, immersive, and intractable/interesting, than huge and empty/lifeless except for a few re spawning enemies.........

                        • I understand when people talk about the Xbox 360 they could relate to the worlds not being as big, but when it comes to the Next-Gen Consoles, how can anyone speculate that Bungie couldn't harness the Huge Increase in performance to make gigantic maps? They've had the basic layout of destiny since the days of ODST. We've seen Grognok used to make a moon base in the space of an hour/hour and a half at most. With all the creative minds behind these levels... I'm sure as hell confident Bungie will make this game Incredibly large.
