Formatting a Hard Drive to work with an Xbox 360

Does anyone know where I can find the correct software to format an HD to work in an Xbox? My current drives are filling up with all the DLC for Battlefield and Halo 4, and MS no longer sells the non-slim drives. I tried a used one, but the one good 250GB one I found didn't work and I had to return it. I have a 250G, 2.5" SATA drive, but I couldn't find all the software needed to format it. Any help would be appreciated.

  • If I recall correctly, the formatting of the drive is not what is critical to make the drive readable to your 360. I believe that the console reads the model, part number and/or serial number of the drive and if it does not match drives that were factory-designated for the 360, it won't read them. I heard that a long time back and I don't recall the veracity of the source, but I am aware that people who have just tried to "slap in" a 2.5" SATA drive have failed.
