In-game transactions would be a bad fit for destiny.

There is talk among a lot of people eager to buy weapons, armor, etc and a while ago Bungie hired an economic advisor to help presumably with an in-game economy. There is even a huge amount of text on "VIRTUAL CURRENCY AND VIRTUAL ITEMS" in the code of conduct. It seems that if there are virtual transaction, the WILL use real money. That scares me, alot. If you are able to buy things to use in-game, it could definitively change how the game is played. Lets look at the game itself. There seems to be a big emphasis on exploration around our solar system. I think that finding things like weapons, armor, upgrades, etc will take a long time and will be rewarding. Like if you have some super rare pistol or sniper it is significant because you spent hours trying to find it and you have a story to say how you got it. But if you can buy weapons/unlocks with currency, what is the point of exploring and finding it yourself? Would it make it feel less rewarding if things you could be found could be bought by others on a virtual store in seconds? I am for trading weapons and things you find to other players if they both earned them through playing the game. It makes getting something new feel more rewarding and ultimately makes trading very serious. I also feel that currency should also be earned by gameplay if it is needed. In the end my point is virtual currency and virtual transactions could easily turn Destiny into a play to win game and break down the sense of exploration/adventure. This is all speculation but I am not too keen on the possibility of being able to buy things rather than earn them. I suppose it is going to have to be the trade-off for no monthly fee, if that is the case. But, how would feel if the game had in-game transactions? Are you for or against them (if so explain why)? (Again, no one knows anything for sure and this is all assumptions). Edit: I want to clarify transactions made by money you earn in-game are fine as long as you can't buy money to use for the game. Everything you should do should be earned by gameplay and progression.

  • I'm all for in-game transactions, as long as its not real money. Bungie will hopefully not do real money transactions especially after the flop of Diablo 3. Lastly, those rare items will be priced on the "Auction House" for an insane amount. So, a lot of people won't even be able to get them.

The only thing that should be allowed to pay real money for in game is cosmetic items, skins for your weapons and vehicles, but absolutely nothing that can boost your character. But I doubt they will put in such a thing, it will be the in game currency.

  • They will not require real money. In Game Currency is what there will be.

As long as they're cosmetic purchases, why not. Or perhaps vehicle tuning upgrades. Not game changers like weapons though. Unless it's like, buy a nuke for 20 real bucks. Then if the person wants to go bankrupt nuking the playing field, we can all rest easy that they will eventually not be able to afford playing after a time.

  • I'm all for in game currency, just so long as it has nothing to do with real world money.

I hope that there is no way to buy your way ahead in Destiny, but I won't freak out unless it is a confirmed part of the game.

  • In games where you can use real money it's always fun to see how you do as a free player.

  • Your post made me really excited for some reason, but yes i agree. Hopefully the in game currency will be just in game and will have no connection to real world money.

  • saying anything is a bad fit for destiny is pretty ridiculous at this point considering we don't know anything about the destiny.

  • I honestly wouldn't mind microtransactions, so long as everything you can buy with them can also be found within the world with some exploring, or bought with in game currency that's given after missions are complete for example. If I already paid $60 for the game, it would be beyond poor business practice in my mind to withhold basic content (guns, armor, skins, etc.) from us unless we fork over extra money (this is only in reference to items. If Bungie wants to go ahead and add DLC locations we can visit later on, that's fair game. Just don't make it pay to win in the sense that guys who pay money get all the overpowered items). The Battlefield Bad Company 2 approach is a good one to look at: everyone can earn every gun and item in the game just by playing a lot, and specifically, allows the player to unlock the items for a specific class just by investing time in that class, and attachments for a weapon by using that weapon more. If I like to play assault and use a shotgun for example, by playing that class setup, I'm slowly unlocking items specific to the assault class, as well as attachments for my shotgun. Players who don't have the time to invest to unlock everything in this fashion however have the option to fork over some money and unlock all those items and attachments, without having to invest as much time doing so. This style of microtransaction allows everyone to unlock everything according to how they play, their patience, and the time they are willing to put into a game, and IMO, is the best way to approach this.

  • I wouldn't mind in game currency that was only available in game, where you couldn't buy them with real money , because I haven't really seen a game that had that option and hasn't become a "play to win" game (I haven't seen one but if you know of one I will be glad to change my opinion btw)

  • Bungie know what "competitive multiplayer" is. And that doesn't involve paying to win. If anything, it just enhances the game for some people, but doesn't affect your own.

  • I agree that it could be a bad thing for the game, but it could just as easily be perfectly fair. It all depends on how items are meant to be acquired in Destiny and what their purpose is.

Virtual Currency does not equal Microtransactions. Halo Reach's credits are a form of VIRTUAL currency. Virtual currency means that it is some form of currency that doesn't really exist, and has no real value behind it. Also, here is the part you mention in the Terms of Use (also for anyone that doesn't want to look for it):

VIRTUAL CURRENCY AND VIRTUAL ITEMS You may have the opportunity to use virtual, in-game or in-app currency ("Virtual Currency") or license a variety of virtual, in-game or in-app items ("Virtual Items") that can be used through the Bungie Mobile App or Bungie games. You may be required to pay a fee to obtain Virtual Items or Virtual Currency. You have no property interest in any Virtual Currency or Virtual Items. Any purchases of Virtual Currency or Virtual Items (whether through actual monetary transactions or accumulation through membership benefits or gameplay) are purchases of a limited, non-transferable, revocable license to use such Virtual Items or Virtual Currency within the applicable Bungie Mobile App or Bungie game. Virtual Currency and Virtual Items may not be transferred or resold for commercial gain in any manner, including, without limitation, by means of any direct sale or auction service. Virtual Currency and Virtual Items have no monetary value, and cannot be used to use products or services other than within the applicable Bungie Mobile App or Bungie game. Virtual Currency and Virtual Items cannot be refunded or exchanged for cash or any other tangible value. If you do not redeem your Virtual Currency or Virtual Items, so long as your Bungie account remains active and in good standing, you will be offered an opportunity to convert any unused Virtual Currency or Virtual Items into one or more in-game or other options determined by Bungie in its sole discretion. All Virtual Currency and Virtual Items are unconditionally forfeited if your Bungie account is terminated or suspended for any reason, in Bungie’s sole discretion, or if Bungie discontinues any Virtual Currency or Virtual Item program. Bungie has no liability for hacking or loss of your Virtual Currency or Virtual Items. Bungie has no obligation to, and will not, reimburse you for any Virtual Currency or Virtual Items lost due to your violation of these terms and conditions. Bungie reserves the right, without prior notification, to limit the order quantity on any Virtual Currency or Virtual Items and/or to refuse to provide you with any Virtual Currency or Virtual Items. Price and availability of Virtual Currency and Virtual Items are subject to change without notice.

The main parts that I see are:
You may be required to pay a fee to obtain Virtual Items or Virtual Currency. You have no property interest in any Virtual Currency or Virtual Items. Any purchases of Virtual Currency or Virtual Items (whether through actual monetary transactions or accumulation through membership benefits or gameplay)
That actually sounds like how Bioware did their multiplayer in ME3, you could still earn credits through playing, or you could buy them. In this case it seems to have multiple ways of getting Destiny's form of currency. Then there is this part:
Price and availability of Virtual Currency and Virtual Items are subject to change without notice.
So, I think you will be able to buy them, but also earn them through playing, because it has the word "availability" in there.

If this is true, in game items that are difficult or time consuming to get, should have much better stats than store bought.

Not everyone has time to invest in a game to do that. I don't care if someone buys all the cool armor and weapons if they can. That's a PVP player's problem, not mine.

  • The contract with activision mentions both micro-transactions and subscriptions. And thus far bungie have avoided an answer, or at best replied with a "it is becoming a standard practice" line. So you should expect micro transactions for exactly the items you mentioned, that is the higher powered/specialised power weapons and gear. But also expect to need on ongoing subscription budget, if you want to play further than the default start-up worlds. Suspect this will be treated with disbelief, but why would activision include it within the contract as a planned item if they never intended to follow through. They hinted at it with the COD series, but COD was no morg, no demand to spend outside of the base game (even the DLC maps failed to meet expectations ... but Destiny, perfect fit. Prepare to pay to play.

Things are already treated as add on services (Bungie Pro?) and this is nothing new. Whether it's buying custom skins, emblems, outfits (especially in MMO titles) it's just a way to keep the player occupied. In-game transitions aren't game breaking. They aren't only going to give away "the best gear" to players that buy it for $100.00 in real money. Micro transactions, are just that, micro. I don't foresee them selling anything that would be consider the game's best, top tier items. Sure, you could buy different ways to customize your character or have in-game pets. It's no different than customizing your Xbox Live avatar, merely cosmetic. If done properly, it's not a big backlash as you're making it out to be.

      • Where there is currency to be earned, traded and spent with other players a gray market is going to arise outside the framework of the game. Accounts will get hacked, dirty money will get laundered, and the game will be marginally improved for some. The great things about Bungie games is that PLAYING them is the fun part. A focus on game play, exploration and social activity is what will make the game great. An auction house type system will create a situation were a player feels the need to earn that currency as quickly as possible. This really kills the experience. I stopped playing WoW for good because it felt like a chore, not a diversion. "Need to earn more gold. Need to get better gear so I can raid with my friends." An economy and currency does add to a game, but it also adds a ton of real life nightmares. A currency that cannot be traded and only allowing "found" as opposed to bought gear to be traded should limit many of these problems.

To be completely honest, if Bungie is a smart developer and expects high sales for this game now and for the future, I trust that they will understand that this will really -blam!- up the game. If this ever happens I know it has to be Activision that puts them up to it. Bungie would never do something like this and they never have. They've been known to come out with free maps for games all the time, they are very mindful of their fans and their customers. Microtransactions would be bearable for cosmetic purposes like skins or stuff like that but I doubt there would be any p2w crap in this game. Random thought: I hope they have an auction house in this game where people buy and sell armor, weapons, and items like in WoW or Diablo.

        • All in all, it shouldn't have a pay-to-win or a pay-to-have-fun or even a pay-to-play-with-your-friends-because-disk-locked-content thing going on I don't really care about micro transactions, but the good stuff shouldn't be available only to those who decide to cough up bundles of cash Whatever it is, it should have an equal chance of being as just as good as in-game content And yeah, don't make money the shortcut to getting good stuff, that just blows
