What may have caused less forum/group activity, and what can encourage it?

Some posters I've been chatting with have mentioned that they feel B.next has a bit of an unnecessary [i]learning curve[/i]. What they mean by that is that the UI of Bungie.next takes much more effort to navigate than the original layout did, which can make it difficult to follow conversation and awkward to read. Posting on B.net old was convenient because the layout was straight-forward. You'd sign in, select a forum or group, create a thread, and then you were done. Replying, quoting, saving, pinning, and moderating were in places that made sense. BB Code was likely the extent of trouble a user may have encountered in the past, and it's nice to see that was changed in B.next. But there are a lot of other changes that have been made as well: looser rules, tag usage, navigation changes, liking posts, sorting threads, replying to posts, image linking, hiding posts, muting users, following groups/users, smaller group limits, etc. While the majority of these changes alone may enhance productivity/accessibility in some way, together some of them instead complicate the forum experience and make it more difficult to follow conversation. With the previous features that have yet to return (Top Forum Topics/Pinned Threads, Group Articles, Saved Threads, and Titles), many of B.net's distinguishing traits may seem missing. Looser moderation could even be a turn off for some. I understand how those may have driven some members away, but are those the only reasons? Could it simply be because Bungie has no game around at the moment? What do you think is the main reason members feel less inclined to post? Can those who are displeased chime in with more input and suggestions?

  • At first it was the UI, but I think it's turned into being the actual community itself. Things just aren't how they used to be.

  • The forums were horribly jumbled, whitewashed to the point of being retina-searing, users were homogenized into one single mass when titles were taken away, too many subforums added to the confusion, and hashtags still don't have any place here. That's pretty much it. I'd love to see what this place would be like post-Destiny, in the B.old format.

  • I found the private groups to be some what useful but for new members to come in and try to get acquainted it seemed very limited. I do miss the old layout and I agree with you on that. I find this Test of a "beta" to be a good and interesting gamble to pull in a new audience. Bungie has also been good at taking risks, lets just hope that it doesn't have the same effect as the Myth II installer bug (LOL) if you get mad at this site and you want to delete it from your favorites.

  • I haven't noticed any change in private group activity. What can encourage it? You can by advertise your group like before. I hate private groups don't expect me to go in one. What encouraged things like that before? I hated private groups and I never wanted to be in them. I only used it because I wanted to talk to people about certain things privately. Less forum activity? Probably not having their game out and no one advertises this site. I have never heard anyone go, "Oh B.net is a sweet place to hang out at where there is a wild community where you can talk about diversified things!" Well now you can. We can talk about anything we want now which is awesome. It causes more social interaction that way and makes things more diverse. Adding more features could amp discussion and ordering posts helps.

  • One reason I use the site less now is because I have a phone, and no computer. B.next's layout doesn't work well with the iPhone, it lags and crashes a lot. Also, quoting is used way less frequently, and replies are sorted by most recent to old. I am not a very big fan of this.

  • Well, I wasn't able to log into the new site until today. There was an error, I guess. Other members could have the same problem as I did, so weren't able to actively participate in groups and their discussions.

Oh no! It's different and it takes more than 1 brain cell to use. Good riddance to those who can't devote 2 brain cells to post and be in the community.

    • We need chronological posts in threads. It is getting a bit silly, really. :-)

    • In general, the forums are now just a disorganised mess. "popular" post system stymies new conversations. Layout is often confusing or simply nonsensical.

      • One thing I think would be nice to have is an option to turn all replies on, so we wouldn't have to click every time we wanted to see the replies.

      • It takes longer to load. It's reminding me of the couple times I tried navigating Waypoint. Slow. I can get used to the layout and format, eventually though.

      • Honestly, I think it has something to do with all the serious political threads, its just not fun and laid back as it used to be.

          • I have only noticed a drop off in activity in groups. The mains still seem as active as ever. If not, more. I know I am more active in the mains now.

          • I think its because now groups don't really have that significance of being able to discuss anything in private. In the off topic forums there is no restriction, many groups were made to discuss politics, religion, ETC but now you can just do that in the public forum.

            • I don't post as much because I'm on my iPod so I don't have to sit in front of a computer and go to one to check the top stories and such on B.net. The thing is though, with this new reply system, 1-2 replies makes my screen get all choppy, and 3+ replies crashes it. So I see just a few comments with a bunch of replies I can't read or respond to it limits what I post.

            • Things seem to have taken a hit and that's never a good thing, but it's better to make changes now than to wait until activity ramps up with Destiny.

            • Honestly, my biggest complaint is the lack of auto sign in. This above all else has made me reluctant to go to B.net. I am lazy, I don't want to have to sign in all the time.

                • Activity has dropped because the new format for threads (no pages, inifinite scrolling, attempts to put newest posts first, sub-replies, etc.) is counter-intuitive and completely unsuitable for forums. It's now far harder to follow conversations in any kind of logical manner. This talk of an "increased learning curve" is an attempt at justifiying shitty UI design as being for "more intelligent users."
