I need somone to clear somthing up for me. I have a Bellsouth Fastaccess DSL internet connection, which SHOULD be at least a 256k connection. I only looked really hard for the first time today, and from what I've gathered, this means that I should receive files to my CPU at least 256kb/s, right?
However, the test file my friend is sending me now over AIM file transfer says 26k/s, and its been coming in steady at that same speed for the past hour. This download rate is worse than a 56k modem users, isn't it? Can somone please tell me how to optimize my connection?

when it says you're downloading at 26k, its probably in kilobytes. however, 256kps is 256 kiloBITS per second. there are 8 bits in a byte, so logically you should download at 32kilobytes. however, due to various factors, the kilobyte number ends up being closer to 1/10th of the kilobit number. hence my 1500kps downstream, 256kps upstream connection downloads at around 150 kilobytes a second at uploads at around 25kilobytes a second.
