I'm going to be buying a bass real soon, I was wondering if any of you kind folk here had any tips for me about playing?
Posted by: Shishka Learn how to maintain your bass
I've played guitar for 13 years, passed my Grade 8 theory and playing, and you know what? I still get other people to maintain it for me. I don't even change strings, I'm rubbish at it (my Dad's better than me, so he likes to think of himself as my 'roadie'). While I know how to take my guitar apart if need be, they're like vintage/classic cars. If you know what you're doing, cool. If not, take it to a shop. There's nothing to be embarrassed about by doing this at all. If you love your instrument enough, I'm sure you'd only want the best for it anyway. Practise, and learn your scales. This is very important, even more so for Bass players as Bass lines are all taken from one type of scale or another. And one more thing, if you're a beginner and haven't bought one yet (pardon my ignorance if you have, been up all night), don't buy a fretless. I have 3 basses. 2 Fretted, and one fretless (my Jazz Bass). Bass is so enjoyable, I love playing it more than guitar sometimes. You and the drummer have the best laughs anyway, regardless of what guitarists say lol (looong story). :) [Edited on 9/3/2005]
