Where the user has green or red bars. You can rep/neg people, etc. This is useful on other forums to be able to immediately tell if the user is a quality poster or a troll. Bodybuilding.com has a great reputation system, and works as follows:
Reputation / Rep Power.
Reputation = the amount of points your reputation has - basically all the rep power of everyone who's repped or negged you combined.
Rep Power = your reputation divided by 1000. Round up if even 1 point above (so 1001 reputation = 2 rep power)
Repping someone = your rep power get's added to their Reputation
Negging someone = half of your rep power gets deducted from their Reputation
So if my Reputation is 1,000,000 then my Rep Power is 1000. If I rep someone who has 15 rep power, they would bump up to 16 rep power (1 point added to their rep power, per 1000 rep power repped to them).
If my Rep Power is 1000 and I neg someone, it only deducts 500 from their Reputation and thus may or may not result in deducting a point from their Rep Power - it would depend on how much Reputation they have and if subtracting 500 from it would result in enough of a loss to bring their Rep Power down 1 point.
To further expand on negging someone, if they have 1400 Reputation then they have 2 rep power. If I (with 1000 Rep Power) neg them, then it would deduct 500 (half of my rep power since it's a neg) from their Reputation, thus resulting in their new Reputation being 900 and thus their Rep Power going down to 1.
The system works better with time and is very helpful in forums. It would also help with obeying rules because instead of a moderator just being able to ban you, they could "Mod Neg" you and basically -blam!- your Rep Power. For example, mods on bodybuilding.com generally have 500k-2Mil Rep Power, so if you get negged by one of them you're going to lose a lot of Rep Power so you'll want to avoid doing bad stuff so you don't get Mod Negged or Banned.
Your role as a moderator enables you immediately ban this user from messaging (bypassing the report queue) if you select a punishment.
