From my experience, not many people played the Xbox, it was more PS2 based and a handful had Xbox Live. Halo 3 and the 360 on the other hand, nearly everyone has Live and pretty much everyone i could speak to has played Halo 3. So given the fact not too many played Halo 2 (again in the context of people i know in person), it's unlikely they played Halo 1 (either online for PC or LAN with friends on Xbox) so they can't really judge which is the best in the series without having spent sufficient time with all of the games.
