Flood Already Released On Delta Halo - Halo 2

Title for Reference. So I was talking with a fellow member about the whole Flood conflict, both with Ancient Humanity and the Forerunners and how the Flood/Precursors returning to the Galaxy may be the ancient evil promoted for the Reclaimer Trilogy. Anyways, the convo eventually lead to the Flood on the Halo's and to the Flood that were already released and fighting the Sentinels within the Sentinel Wall. I think I heard something about this being explained or hinted towards somewhere, but I can't remember. Does anyone know how exactly the Flood were already fighting the Sentinels on Delta Halo? Where did the mass come from to sustain them on the ring? Thanks. Discuss. [Edited on 10.02.2012 5:29 PM PDT]

 •
Posted by: CrabbySpider I think I read somewhere (maybe halopedia), that the Gravemind had been lying dormant beneath the surface of Delta for thousands of years. If I remember correctly then the first time the MC encounters the Flood on Delta is after Regret is taken out. MC is captured by the Gravemind and taken to a cavernous lair. Let me see if I can find it somewhere. EDIT: Yeah here it is.
Through neglect shown by the Monitor of Installation 05, 2401 Penitent Tangent, a Flood outbreak occurred, and the Gravemind was able to find enough biomass to rebuild itself deep under the Library of the installation. It assimilated the dead Prophet of Regret into itself and also captured the Monitor.

Alright, that we know. But how did the outbreak occur?
