All problems addressed, please read, Bungie.

First of all I’d like to say that I love the new Forums, but I think they have some major problems. It looks clean, but isn’t very functional. I want to fix that. I hope this helps Bungie out, at least a little bit. Here’s a list of all of the relatively major problems I’ve seen so far. I have left NOTHING out. Be prepared to read for a while, my friends… 1.)There needs to be the option to minimize the Search Bar in the bottom right hand of the screen. It is very cool, I admit, but at times I would like to minimize it further. It already minimizes about half of its entire size, but the “circle” with the septagon symbol, and the small “bar” that remains from the enlarged tool bar I’d like to see minimized also. [IDEA]They could minimize into a tiny button in the bottom right hand of the screen for further use. Maybe into the webmaster icon that you use in the Bungie.Net logo. That would be cool. ;-)[/IDEA] 2.)The Underground needs to have a longer topic list before the topic is pushed to page two. I personally would like to see it three times as long as it currently is. It would hopefully accommodate for the flood of users that will pour in when Halo 2 is released, and it would also give the forum longer “memory”. Believe me, once a topic is on page two, it is forgotten by the majority of the forum users. Without being remembered, “new” forum topic-makers get discouraged that they are not being heard, and leave. Also, without any memory, no one is remembered, and thus you have regulars- but no one knows who he or she is. Without regulars, newbies do not have three things. 1. No one to look up to. And thus act the same as they did when they first came to the forum. They don’t ever learn what’s right and wrong, and don't know not to ask the same questions all of the time. 2. No entertainment! ;-) Regulars keep the forum fresh and funny (at least I tend to think so. ;-)). Without entertainment newbies may be inclined to leave. 3. No one to try to act like. Once a regular sets an example of how to act the right way, they follow- and eventually become regulars themselves. 3.)Post counters enforce mass-posting by newbies in their desire become regulars. If you have post-hoarding newbies being considered regulars by everyone else, then you have a trend cascade. EVERYONE wants to post all of the damn time. That would ruin The Underground; it would be almost impossible to fix the problem without major booting. I don’t want that to happen. 4.)This is a problem that I doubt will be fixed, but oh-well. I want you to hear it. The instant posting will make frequent AIM users feel inclined to turn the Underground into a massive chat room. This also may be the result of someone who wants a lot more posts, to be considered a regular. (See #3) 5.) The Bungie logo in the top left needs to be either permanently "stuck" at the top of the screen, or have the ability to minimize. It gets in the way of forum topics at times, and is [i] extremely[/i] irritating. It really serves no purpose but to direct you to the main page, which can be done much easer by just putting it at the top of every page. No, “follow action” needed. 6.) Chronological order at the forums are needed. As it is right now you can’t keep track of the topics that you recently posted in. Quite frankly- it’s chaos. This is (in my mind) one of the biggest problems faced by the forums. I thank you for your time, you guys. My hope is that these ideas will make the new Bungie.net forums a more respected place in the Halo community. It is not only my hope, it is my goal. The old Underground was looked down upon last time. This time, I want to change that. See you around, -Banshee Barron. [Edited on 4/14/2004 3:57:47 PM]

Most forums give out rewards or titles whenever you have reached a certain post count. Bungie.net does not reward users on the amount of posts you make...so there really isn't an incentive to post just for the sake of increasing your post count.

It inclines WAY too many people to post just for the heck of posting. Some people think that if they have more posts than other people, they're better than them. It's just annoying to have people tell you that you're a (for quoting purposes only)"noob" because they've sat on the Underground giving one post replies all day to every single topic, giving them a higher post count. Hit it on the head Banshee. Good job. The bottom one actually doesn't bother me much at all. The big Bungie symbol, though cool, has to go. Or just stay at the top. [Edited on 4/14/2004 4:27:34 PM]

It will make us all want to post spam more often.

But I mean I don't really care if the counter is there or not. Doesn't mean anything. [Edited on 4/14/2004 5:08:49 PM]

I believe that we came to the conclusion that quality was more important. Besides, the new people might know by now who the old forum posters are... just look at the 'member since' tidbit under the avatar! Although that doesnt make you a regular... I'm sure that there are people who've been a member for years, but posted almost nothing. In fact, I didnt know that I've been here longer than most people. Hell, I've been here longer than the Barron or Yoozel. (but only by a few day/weeks... heh heh)

  • Well it's cool to see I made a few coments. But I agree with sigma, if you have something important to add to a conversation, add it, and don't requard it as; "SCORE i've reached level 500 now that I have 10,000 posts!". It happens on the morrowind forums all the time. Noob calling and stuff, I hate the damn word! It' even worse on Battle.net. But that's another story. The post counter is neat, I really don't think it will do much, except show how much of a life you [i]don't[/i] have. But all said in done, Bungie doesn't seem like the company that would reward it's users for using there forum....

  • I think we're going to end up having to deal with immature posters no matter what we do. I cant really agree too much with the idea of a post counter encouraging others to post more and more. First up people will find out pretty quickly that this isnt a site which awards a personal title for those who post a lot, so like has been afotrementioned, there is no incentive to post. However, people do get excited. Just look how a new picture causes mulitple topics on the same thing. Besides, unlike a lot of generic forums, I think a site like a Bungie website, while offers fun and some level of immaturity, it also comes across as a place where you have to respect the authority. From what Ive seen, most kids and general trouble makers tend to not be quite as bad in a place such as this. Obviously we're going to get some level of difficulties, but I dont think it deserves say getting rid of the counter, which is but one of many reasons someone might think to spam. I think with a little moderation and an eye on peoples behaviour, the foot wont have to come down quite so often. Its true, I did see that post someone made about wanting to make it to a thousand posts or whatever before the release of Halo 2, but I saw that before I even saw this thread, and it didnt occur to me that the guy was suddenly going to start posting tons of meaningless posts just to up his count. If he does, well, i stand corrected, but it seemed to me the sort of thing you say as a quick joke. As for the logos, I have absolutely no problem. They look great, they're perfect in their functionality, and it makes nagivagtion so much easier. of course, that's on a nice big 17" screen. Ive navigated this site on a smaller screen and it was a little clustered, but not tot he point it was irritating. But that's just me, and Im not surprised if noone cares what I think =P [Edited on 4/14/2004 9:26:32 PM]

  • Banshee hit the nail on the head. I would agree/was going to say all of those except point 4. But all of the others i agree with. I am told there are people with over 300 and 400 posts already. I mean wow, just wow. I now have 2. Post whoring=more works for stosh and the rest of the moderators.

  • My particular favourite group of members are those that advertise their post count intentions in their sigs, like "Going for a 1000". Im like.....why? That just means your idiocy and inability to string sentences together will be spread across the board for all to see. My main gripe is more a personal one, Im used to php type boards, with member lists and such. This board seems to be structured a little differently to most boards, I cant figure out whether this is necessarily a bad thing, but for me it will take a little getting used to. Also, the big avatars are very cool, but um, very, ah, big. Given that half the page space is taken up by the scroller on the right, the large avatars to me seem like wasted real-estate. 60x60 avatars would be cooler in my opinion, they look more concise and tidy. Or the profile section on the left could be made generally tighter, maybe with smaller fonts. It just seems very large and overbearing, given how small the actual forum is. • I don't agree with you complaints on the avatars. I really like their size. Any smaller and it would be too hard to tell what the pictures are I think. I mean some of them are really detailed.
