Ah, The Halo Movie Discussion Thread. I have been there for a little while, fighting valiantly for the anti-Halo movie.... thingy. Any road, my time there has pointed out some glaringly rude conduct regarding posting. This is prob. falling on well behaved ears, but what the hell. Here are a few useful tips that will help you gain acceptance and maybe a little respect. 1. Read the previous posts. Is not that much hard work. If the thread is only a few pages long, it doesn't take too long to have (at the very least) a quick skim throught the previous pages to see what has or has not been discussed, who the main posters are, to look for quotes you might like to use and to generally see how the post has gone. Posts flow like a river, and you must be in the boat of knowledge. 2. Use the [q ] [/q ] function. It is VERY basic, and it makes it clear what points you are addressing. 3. Use correct grammar and spelling (a point mentioned many times before) 4. Respect other peoples point of view. Your opinion is not the only opinion in the entire world on any given subject. 5. Point, counterpoint. Makes for interesting debates. 6. Use the edit button! It's right next to the 'Reply to' button. It's not that difficult. ( There we go goweb, just for you ;-) ) Follow these tips, and you shall be loved. Or, at the very least, not get beaten up so much. [Edited on 9/30/2004 12:36:07 PM]
Posted by: Recon Number 54
Posted by: GameJunkieJim In defense of the poster using the CovenantPorn signature. His signature is just that, a silly expression of form, it shouldn't be directly compared to the post to "authenticate" his thoughts or opinions. The signature line is just for thoughts or links that you want someone else to see. It would seem to be short-sighted to discount the validity of anyones post based on the signature (within reason), because even the silliest people have moments of clarity and depth that deserve to be read just as much as the poster with the somber and serious signature. -JIM
I may be mistaken, but I think that the Covenant -blam!- exerpt is a quote from Letters to the Webmaster. I'd check and verify but I am at work at the moment and just got swamped.
Good points, Jim, Recon. As my sig is a quote from the Webmaster, I feel foolish for the judgment I made. I was reacting and writing before really thinking about what the second or third level below the surface of the post might have been. I'll be keeping Jim's comment in mind when I view sigs from now on. Thanks, guys.

I couldn't agree more. Posting in the Septagon about how to be a polite and contributing member of Bungie-society is "preaching to the choir" in the highest degree. But it keeps us on our toes, refreshes and revives our faith in our fellow members. Plus it gives us something to point to when a kiddie is acting "kiddie-ish".
Posted by: littlerat Maybe shorter posts
Long posts are fine, as long as they are paragraphed well. Recon's posts are always easy on the eye. As are pretty much everyone else who posts on The Septagon. This thread is definately reaching the wrong audience. Its like showing a training video to the manager of a company. EDIT- Damn you GJJ.... Same Avatar After Posting (SAAP, or 'Sap') is '-blam!-'. Sure, I could blame myself, but why bother when I can blame you? *BLAME* [Edited on 9/30/2004 12:48:16 PM]

Then there's this example, from New Mombasa.
Subject: Deeper Topic: Christianity in Halo and Halo 2 Hello guys, for you who are imediatly about to posting stupid things, please just press back now, I appreciate it, I need a real thought about the subject here. Anyway, I was wondering on your opinions about Christianity in the Halo Series. A few points and connections made so far are as follows: 1) The prolouge to the game: The Prophets (Isrealites - or Jews) had much power and respect from the Elites (The People of the land) through thier direct connection to Forerunner (God). The Prophets meet direct decendants of the Forerunner (God), they are called humans (Jesus Christ.. more specifically Master Cheif who plays a double role with the name John 117, John the Baptist, Revalations 1:17. "When I saw him, I fell at his feet as though dead. Then he placed his right hand on me and said: "Do not be afraid. I am the First and the Last.") The Prophets (Isrealites) attempt to turn the Elites (People of the Land) against the human (Jesus). The Elites should be worshiping the humans rightfully, and the Prophets know they will lose everything if this happens. 2) The Flood: We arn't talking literal flood like that of Noah's Ark, it's the connection to water. Water = purity, clensing, renewing (Hence Baptism in water). The Flood purate (eliminate) the universe of life, they sweep across the land and clear away all in its path. The flood sweep across the land, much like a flood of water. Revalations 16:1-2 Then I heard a loud voice from the temple saying to the seven angels (Another point, Bungie frequently uses the number 7 such as does the Bible to represent things of extreme, completeness, or fullness), "Go, pour out the seven bowls of God's wrath on the earth." The first angel went and poured (poured, verb connected to a liquid, aka, a flood) out his bowl on the land, and ugly and painful sores broke out on the people (Hence the disformed looking flood).. ex: of Bungie and 7... 343 Guilty Sparks. Important Biblical Numbers: 3 and 7. 3 sevens, 7 x 7 x 7 = 343 Is there anything anyone would like to add or argue with in these cases? I have to confront a priest with this information soon (Getting the church to sponser a halo league and team) so someone with a good knowledge of the Bible would help with his/her opinion. Thanks in advance.
What follows is the poster's signature. Does it make sense, given the topic posted?
Covenant don't literally watch -blam!-. Their civilization is so advanced that they actually smell -blam!-. Or have it communicated to them in degrees of heat. This hot, malodorous form of -blam!- is naturally a very private matter, best enjoyed in the privacy of a ceramic Covenant Pornhole.
I'm all for intelligent reasoning. Heck, I'm in favor of just about any kind of reasoning, as long as it's well written and provides examples, and doesn't contradict itself. So I should like this based on it having one of the three covered, right? (It is reasoning, isn't it?) But, alas, I cannot. It was the flood of posts akin to this one that has kept me from visiting more frequently in the last month (well, I was also living what some might call a life--not to be derogatory to anyone here--and life has been a bit hectic of late), aside from checking out the Weekly Updates. I thought, based on the thread title, that the topic might be worth a look. It does say "Deeper Topic" in the title line, doesn't it? Putting aside the obvious, that religion (nor politics) isn't supposed to be discussed in the forums, what I found, as you have read, appears to be a jumbled, thrown together mess of misspelled words and half-baked stabs at connectivity between a video game that couldn't have less to do with Christ and his followers than my fingernail shavings do. Maybe I just hope too much when I visit here. Hope that more folks like Stalin the 31st, Recon Number 54 and Eagle 117 (just three of many others) are online posting good conversational topics (every time I've tried posting one it's on page two before you can blink--or maybe I'm not trying hard enough?). Rant over.

I too saw this post. I commented on it in the thread. or the 'Froum' as some members have called it (The idea that a thread is a forum is ridiculous enough, but 'Froum'? Please....) Any road, I too tried to make some sense, but I found it difficult. Hang on... Heres my reply.
Posted by Stalin the 31st How would it evolve the graphic movie industry? How do YOU know? Are you a movie producer? Nyet. How would a Halo movie 'up' the industry 'soci-economically'? What industry? Do you even know that you have used this phrase in the wrong context? And that you have spelt it incorrectly? And that your sentence makes no sense? Bah. HUMBUG. EDIT: Ahh, Stalin came down quite hard on poor tdj_fmc. *Pats tdj_fmc on head* Run along, ya little scamp.
Yes, there we go. At first, I tore him down, but it wasn't meant to be a nasty tearing down. Hence the edit. But I hope you can see why Stalin was angry. Nothing irritates me more than people who attempt to look intelligent by using words that they have made up, or created by crudley shoving together two other words. Also, people who use words they clearly dont know the meaning of irritates me as well. But, thats just me. (Dang.... this quote kind of goes against the 'Being courteous' thing......) *Stalin stabs himself in the belly with a small knife*

I feel your pain, truly I do. Unfortunately, suggestions and guidelines only get through to people who don't really have problems communicating (the clear sending and receiving of information) in the first place. Many of our members are more than capable of sending information. Are they all sending clear information? Unfortunately, they are not. Are they capable/willing to spend the time receiving/understanding information? Again, not as many as one would hope for. As an example, I'll pull a post from the thread in question. The name of the poster is not relevant. Take a moment to read this, and then try to guess what they are trying to say. Well think about the movie this way… Halo is very well assumed to come out on November. But think about it this way…A halo movie would up the industry soci-economically and evolve the graphic movie industry. Another thing it could do is help expand Halo’s reputation….not degrade it but intensify it’s holding consequent. Now this was one of 3 uninterrupted posts in a row by the same person. If I thought that it was their intent, I would say that they were bumping, but I don't think that entered their mind. I truly do believe that this is a sincere and honest attempt at what they consider to be a logical and well thought discussion. But, I can only look at that and marvel. My first impression was that this was someone who was from a location where English is not the primary language. In such a case, I would say that they were attempting to make an important point, but that my inability to understand was due to the fact that there were differences between the transmitter and receiver. I don't find that to be a bad thing, and certainly not a failure on anyone's part. We could continue to try to and sooner or later, I am sure that we could. However, I checked the poster's profile. It showed they are in the US. Now I am in a quandary as to explain why I am unable (after multiple readings) to get any clear message from this. It could be that I am unable to grasp the subtle nuances and wording. The problem (with that theory) is that I can define and I know each word that is used! It (the post) reminds me of someone in my field (IT Management) attempting to use as many keywords, catchphrases and double-speak as possible in order to seem more knowledgeable, even if they don't know what any of them mean. I don't know for certain if that is the case, but I consider it as at least a possibility. I don't want to monopolize the floor here. Perhaps someone can get more out of this than I could. Which was "a Halo movie would be good". I would be glad to listen to any possible alternate interpretations. The point that I am making is that in this particular case, I am glad that I see the majority of this "communication" inside a few select threads. As long as they have a sandbox to play in, they're welcome to it. I doubt that we could give any guidance, helpful suggestions, or even a session with the discipline bat (if Shishka would loan it out) that is really going to change the core problem. "What we have here is a failure to communicate" edit- don't you hate when you misspell a word, but the spell-check likes it anyway? [Edited on 9/28/2004 3:41:37 PM]
