The 7th Column, The Community, It's Guy, and The Lack There Of

The 7th Column, The Community, It's Guy, and The Lack There Of Let me begin by saying what follows is not my rant, but as I agree with most of it I believe it should be posted. If I am wrong for this then I will recieve my just 'reward' but it must be said. I will not reveal the identity of said ranter for his own privacy reasons. Enjoy! *note: This was written before the announcement of the new Bungie.net* Part 1: You asked for this. Here goes. :3 Let me commence by stating that the problem with the Bungie.net community is deep rooted. I don’t like to blame the web team with any scathing conviction because they have provided the site that, at least formerly, hosted a really good community. However, SketchFactor apparently gave up even before the “upgraded” column was implemented – he was after all the Community Guy whose responsibilities, theoretically, included the interaction with the good persons of the Seventh Column. I was never around too long before the change so I have no grounds on which to argue that he was ever actively involved, but the fact of that matter is that when I and some of my friends submitted our chapters for approval (as was the former custom), he accepted them. The spotlight, too, had been fairly frequently updated. I understand that there are slightly higher concerns than a thriving community of well-mannered, Bungie-loving individuals – the professional needs for a sleek site with job offers and interaction with Halo 2, for example. It’d be ignorant in the extreme to pretend said necessities do not exist. But how many times have we been told that Bungie.net is not a business site – it’s a community site? The answer, should you wonder, is very often indeed. I’ll be up front and admit that some of the things done with the site are amazing, not least the full integration of the various modules as one easy-to-navigate conglomeration. I’ve always liked the forums as they, in my opinion at least, look the part, and are so very easy to use. There’s no unnecessary formatting; you just hit reply or new topic, type what you want, and hit submit. Nothing could be simpler. Since I’d never used a forum before that time, it was the perfect way to get started. Also engaging was the Seventh Column. An invite from a prominent founder via Private Message introduced me to it, and it was excellent: lots of databases and plenty of room for personalisation and creativity, plus scope for organising chapter-wide events. This little communities thrived as one and interacted with one another publicly, also, where great friendships were made and inter-chapter events established. In fact, that was the purpose of the 7th Column Community Page, which died at about the same time as the Spotlight and news. Priorities seem to be wrong, also. I refuse to believe that a search feature – and repeat threads will surface, especially in the absence of constant new discussion material and in the presence of the ridiculous “don’t dig up old threads” regulation – is more crucial to a community site than the community itself. Surely resources would have been better spent on the 7th Column in one way or another. And so many empty promises. Nobody expects miracles, but when fanfests, an updated column, more interaction from Bungie and a community that has official support are pledged, it’s saddening when they are not fulfilled, and more so when they simply fade away without even a “no, that’s not going to happen”. I wouldn’t will them all to attend massive fan gatherings, because, let’s face it, no other game developers do, but the fact that it’s happened before and future events were promised makes it that little bit worse. I’d much rather see a fantastic Halo 3 than direct community interaction, as I’m sure we all would, but surely the purpose of a site for the community and Bungie’s having of a community team is to interact with their fans? But Bungie is just the core, the very heart of a system composed of many more organs, blood, bones and flesh. [Edited on 3/13/2007]

 • So we went from Taking on the entire fabric that makes up this community, lighting it on fire, throwing it on the civilians... threats, accusations, brown nosing, A huge amount of higher-Archy speak, babble, spam, BL worthy assumptions and antics... And now were talking about Blue's Clue's? DID I miss something?

 • It seems every halo site is going through this right now, members complaining that the community is going to -blam!- and all that other good stuff. People are quick tp point fingers but slow to take action. The problem seems to be the lack of activity in the Halo world, which will of course continue to increase as the year progresses. Wait till after the release of Halo 3, than see how many of these problem remain.

 • JTFC... I never knew so much drama existed on bungie.net. I think some of the reasons for this whole thread can be explained very well by this article, an excellent read if you ever want to take the time. It does seem weird that people who are usually kind and respectful in real life can turn into arrogant jerks just by logging onto the internet. I guess its just the way we are though. • People need to be of importance at some point of the earth. It just so happens to be the easiest to do so on a Video Game forum, though why this one I dunno. You can get lost in the shadows way too easily.

 •
Posted by: Spartan 6000 I do not think there is a lack in the Community of Bungie.net, since of course one does not have all the time in the world to sit around all-day on an internet forum as well.
And yet people still find the time to complain about the most inane nuances I've ever seen. And I do think there are people who sit here all day with nothing better to do. The term we call 'a life' is lacking in these poor souls. There are more important things in life than one's reputation on a -blam!- website.

 •
Posted by: Darkm0d Some of the forums are in dissaray, i honestly think IP banning and even .net passport restrictions would make this forum A LOT less crap-ridden. But thats not the case, so you really just have to deal with all the stupidity and accept it. You cant fix a forum that supports free will IMO. there will allways be differenecs in opinion and what not, therefore disputes will allways occur. If anything, this thread should serve as a good refererance to the on-going efforts to make bungie.net more and more of a cool place to be. .
Agreed and pretty much sumed up what I had to say on the matter. I will add that, in a place like Bungie.net one cannot find a state of perfection since 'what is perfection?' Perfection could be posts every minute of everyday, no spam, no disputes, no threads getting out of hand etc..........but this will never be so. So one has to live with these things that go on in the forums and treat it as a normal on going thing and there will always be cases like this. In terms of things going back to the days of high glory and everything before the new hotness, is in my mind a nice thing to think about, but again this site is moving forward and so one must change with the times. I do not think there is a lack in the Community of Bungie.net, since of course one does not have all the time in the world to sit around all-day on an internet forum as well. The community of Bungie still thrives without sitting down and posting every minute of every hour of every day but Bungie.net will keep progressing and for the better I think and it's up to us to keep it that way.

 • Since Bungie Jumpers is a private group and they do not attack or harrass other groups, then they have a right to do what they want to do. Just because the mods are active in that group, does not mean that it is elitist. Everyone on Bungie can start their own private groups, control group membership, and there is nothing wrong with what they have done.

 • It seems to me that a lot* of people suffer from jealousy around here, which considering the people they're jealous of is just... disturbing. *When I say a lot, I mean a lot of people. Those of you who are not a part of that group should know who you are, if not you may be one of them. Confusing? Shouldn't be.

 •
Posted by: Kilroy Not sayin I was mister perfect, but I (for the most part) gave good advice, i think.
Please describe good for me. Is your good my good, or is your good bad in my opinion. What do you base your good off of? Is there some kind of tool used to rate something good or bad? Oh wait, you said "I think", which means that's your opinion. Although, in other people's opinions: "Everyone is entitled to an opinion. Your opinion just sucks."
Posted by: Kilroy 5-Be a Jumper. A lot. If you're a Jumper, you're "in."(thanks butane :P)
Where are you getting your facts from? I've done it all, but where am I? Although I'm not sure if I pleasured James' anoose enough to get achieve a number 4 status, lol. 5- If you have no idea what you're talking about, don't say anything. Do you even know what The Jumpers is founded on? It's like a TFM, but not as radical as those misbegotten, lol. I'll give you a history lesson Kilroy, not that I care to, but because you're trying to tarnish something that I started building since the beginning. The Beginning of the Bungie Jumpers ***Deep in a MSN conversation*** GJJ says: yea my old chapters didn’t do too well Josher says: Well the Arbiters was a good chapter, but hardly anyone even goes to it Nosferatu (Note: this was before he was a mod) says: We should make a new group, just for people who can be intelligent and actually talk without getting flamed GJJ says: Yep GJJ says: Got any ideas for a name Nosferatu says: Black magic? Josher says: How bout The Bungie Jumpers. Like bungee, but with the i, get it, har har har, Bungie Jumpers GJJ says: I just created it. Josher says: Already? GJJ says: Yep, go ahead and join So now you’re “trying” and I do mean “trying” because you doing such a good job of bashing older members who are, for the most part, all about having an opinion, sticking to your guns, and having “intelligent” discussion. So who are you to say that the Jumpers will make you a mod? Out of the 200 people in the chapter, and more than half of them are inactive, hardly any are moderators. The ones I can think of GJJ: Founder, Ash: Been with us pretty much since the day he joined bnet, Pezza: Was introduced through the TFM gang, Achilles: I believe he joined after becoming a mod, or right before he became one, but I wasn’t that active for a long enough time to care, dmbfan: isn’t a mod anymore, but he was actually denied in, and got in whenever we (the admins) we’re dumb enough to have open membership, Nos: co-founder, left in my opinion because he became a mod and got a big head, Yoozel: joined after he became a mod, but he doesn’t even say anything, but meh whatever, Trigger: I can’t remember when he joined, but all I know is that he hates disembodied soul impersonators (yes I am the embodiment of the disembodied) , lol “Don’t dick with me. I’ll dick you over!” And many more like TGP, but we could care less about another aussie, sorry Davie. Not much has changed here, I can see though. I just started to visit this place again. I missed the carnage of Toast, well I saw the beginning, and other such for about a year, but I can say this as a member since 2003 (and this is my second account): The moment you pricks stop worrying about other people and what they’re doing is the moment you actually start to enjoy being on this site. 98.3% of you come here to boost your self-esteems because you’re not cut out for the real-world, well I’m telling you, you’re not cut out for cyberspace either because it’s harder. If this is your problem, try to do something with your life, do something different that you’ve never tried. Pick up a guitar, any instrument. Put the controller down. Start playing cards with people from your school. Maybe you need to actually try talking. It’s pretty sad when you spend your life on here, just criticizing other people’s actions. Nothing is going to changed on this website, it will always be the same and until you can get that through your oddly large dumb thickheaded shell of a skull, the better off you’ll be. I am the Emotional Support, I may not be Disembodied Soul, but “Stop asking questions. Run along. Life's wasted on the living, I always say” And thanks for making me rant on and on about nonsense Kilroy, the Jumpers is a heaven compared to this hell-hole. Now I have to continue my reading on page 5, faar smoggin smog of a zaaboogaaba! EDIT: After reading the whole thing Excellent post Maraxus, it's just a few bad people (Jeff and Jay), that doesn't mean the whole group is "bad", lol. Who am I kidding, Jeff and Jay aren't even "bad", they're just not afraid to speak their minds unlike some people who'd rather blow whistles all day. [Edited on 3/16/2007]
