Bushfire season hits Australia

Homes and lives threatened as 135 fires burn across the state of New South Wales Bushfire season always sucks, it's a horrible start to the new year. Tasmania has been hit bad already, with thousands of people evacuating their homes and towns in order to save their lives, and now NSW is feeling the heat wave as well. Temperatures of 40+ degrees C (100+ F) caused the fire danger to reach the level 'Catastrophic', the worst possible danger level. Just thought you guys should know. Discuss bushfires.

There's hundreds of fires of differing intensity across Australia, and there are about five or six highly catastrophic fires threatening various areas. For you Americans, here in Australia we're having the equal of what would be an extreme tornado outbreak with multiple EF5s, except instead of tornadoes it's bushfires. And it really is hell here - today it got to 42 degrees celcius, and I'm near the coast where we usually have cool, temperate days and relatively cold winters.
Where about?
I live in the Illawarra region, specifically to the south of Wollongong. We all received phone calls from the emergency services last night, and a warning of a "catastrophic fire" is in my area. There's a couple of strong fires south in the Nowra area, which I can smell the smoke from. And today it was hotter here than it was in the inland Southern Highlands and Southern Tablelands, which was really odd, because we usually get a wonderful sea breeze down here that makes it relatively pleasant during hot days. Right now it feels like hell.
Sounds bad. I know a person in Campbelltown who told me it was pretty hot in the past day or two, and when I was down in Nowra it wasn't exactly cold.
