What reason is there to post on the mains?

Private groups allow you to have discussions you can't have on the mains, and they are often moderated in a way that members find more agreeable (i.e. certain things that aren't allowed here are allowed there, but things that are allowed here aren't allowed there). It's easier to keep out trolls who make dozens of alts every time they're banned, and it's easier to forge connections with members because of the smaller community size. I mean, I like the mains well enough. I like venturing out and seeing opinions and perspectives that private groups generally weed out over time. But were I forced to choose one, I'd choose private groups any day. Curious to see which choice others would make.
I'm curious as to why anyone but a bad member would think this was a bad thing. Leave aside the question of how you'd determine who the bad members were - why would it be a bad thing to get rid of them?
If we're leaving out the question of how you'd determine who the bad members were then I think that it would be good to get rid of them. •
Posted by: Primo84 Not to mention, private groups, when run with too much care, often produce the unfortunate side-effect of bringing too many like-minded people together. They have the potential to become an echo-chamber of unpleasant, squishy jerking sounds. There's a Bob Ross quote I'm looking for here, but I'm coming up blank.
Cabinectomys are mutilation.

    • As primo said, I also enjoy the company of someone else's opinion on a subject, even if it isn't the same as mine. The mains are good for chatting with lots of people. [Edited on 01.02.2013 12:58 PM PST]

    • I'd post in private groups more often if it was more active.

    •
Posted by: jaythenerdkid
Posted by: Count Blinkula As for keeping the public out of your "circle", I think one will enjoy a community a lot more once they realize what little effect that trolls and bad discussion have on good discussion. It just might render null that desire to want to cut down on who you see every day.
But trolls and bad discussion do affect good discussion - by interrupting and derailing it, for starters.
Then surround yourself with better trolls.

    • Why not? I like the rules, and it's not like there's a major flaw with the mains. I'll keep responding to the threads I want to respond to, and many others will, there's not really any reason not to reply to what you want to reply to. [Edited on 01.02.2013 8:22 AM PST]

    • Larger community. There are so many small groups that have zero activity, and I'm willing to bet well over 90 percent of those groups are dead and should be shut down. Keep doing what you're doing and we'll keep doing what we're doing.

    •
Posted by: Kivell I am frankly finding it harder and harder everyday to post in the mains.
I can agree with this... partly. I believe that in the current state of BNet, being that it is in its "dark" or quiet period due to the lack of a modern product, the forums in general are a lot less active and worthwhile. I mean, back in '08 to like '10 the forums were still pretty enthusiastic, active and just plain fun. If you, Kivell, are looking at these forums differently, then I'd most likely disagree, respectively. [Edited on 01.02.2013 7:53 AM PST]

    • I've never really found any difference in quality/intelligence/etc between any private groups and the mains. Only difference is activity and some limitations on subject matter. I'll frequent the more active forums more and the less active ones less. The restrictions on subject matter don't bother me because they're better left out of the reach of, well, almost everyone I've ever seen discussing them on the internet in general. So really, my reason for posting in the mains is because I see no discernible difference in quality, only activity. More activity creates more information requiring more attention, and less activity creates less requiring less.

    • What reason is there to post in private groups? To communicate with other beings, I'd think. I see private groups as a retreat - you can escape opinions you don't like, you can escape the uneducated, and sometimes the bigotry. However, you lose far more than you gain by posting in a private group. The audience in a private group is limited, but worse still, it's filtered - the people you converse with have been selected to converse with you on a set of principles, ones you have in common. Groups tend to become circle-jerks at a point in time. Not only can you converse with the same people on the mains as you do in the private groups, but you get to talk to many more too! You get the opportunity to educate others, and at the same time you get the opportunity to learn from others as well. Isolation isn't a good thing. Edit: perhaps the Flood wouldn't be so "bad" if all the "good" posters didn't retreat to groups. [Edited on 01.02.2013 6:55 AM PST]

    •
Posted by: derka derka Because private groups are run by egotistical people who think they're better than they actually are.
I agree with this. I'm going to go with Sapphire because I think it's a perfectly good example of this. The mods cannot take criticism of themselves outside of Sapphire. The slightest criticism and you're banned. It's hilarious. I recently posted OUTSIDE of Sapphire about how I thought Jay and Harlow were being quite arrogant and trying to seize moral high ground. Banned. It's funny how they try to promote a community where you can have mature discussion but in actual fact they discourage discussion of any type to fuel their overinflated egos.
