In the vast amounts of Post Apocalyptic games like Fallout, I Am Alive, Metro 2033, and even Spec Ops The Line why have we not really see a game take place while the event was happening? Imagine a game taking place during a global flood? Or the spread of deserts or even the rapid growth of the forests?
Well it does not really mean that there would be mass death. Imagine an open world game where you started off normal. But the more you play, the forest grows and grows across the world and consumes towns and every other thing in its path. Not really killing, but destruction.
Would you like to see that happen? I personally have not see one before, so that is what I am basing this on.

Because most of the time the main character prevents it.
-
That would be cool
-
They need to make a compelling game that shows how things are before the appocalypse, while -blam!-s happening, the aftermath, and how people rebuild. Almost like The Stand in a videogame.

That's a good idea for a fallout game where your 1st a human but after the nuke your a ghoul [Edited on 12.27.2012 6:45 PM PST]

Not really. They'd screw it up somehow.
Posted by: Spilled Milk Because most of the time the main character prevents it.
Well, then this would present a feeling of helplessness as everything around you is destroyed.
-
Well the problem comes in how to make the person survive all that without making it very linear. Plus you've got to create tons of NPCs and player models that look good but will never be seen again.
-
How are you supposed to implement it in gameplay though? In Fallout and Metro 2033 its just nukes going off, what can you do with something as abrupt as that?
-
I forget what the game was where you are running around a city while it's getting hit by an earthquake saving people, as well as yourself. I think it might be a japanese game US port.

What you have to understand about Post-apocalyptic settings is the idea that the human mind almost cannot contemplate what it would really be like. This sort of novelty of mindset is what makes it so interesting for us to wander around the DC ruins, or the irradiated Mojave waste. I believe that a During-apocalypse could really do well, but there is a formula that to it that might be just too difficult to risk. ;) [Edited on 12.27.2012 6:50 PM PST]

the apocalypse is something that is impossible for you to win. In a post apoc situation you can help rebuild. In a apocalyptic situation all you can do is watch the world burn.

Doesn't Darksiders take place during an apocalypse?

Left 4 Dead?

I'd like to play combat scenarios which also involve struggles throughout a Flood, meteor shower and sandstorm.

I'd like to see an Apocalyptic RPG.

Probably because you'd die, or it'd be about you hiding in a hole. Nukes and stuff aren't friendly.

The idea sounds pretty interesting. I'd bet that Bethesda would do a great job with something like this.
-
Bethesda should hire another company to make a linear FPS that takes place during the Resource Wars that came before the nuclear apocalypse in Fallout. That would be epic. Also it would be interesting to find out who fire nukes first.
