With Bungies discard of managing the Halo Universe the population on these forums dropped significantly.
With the announcement and future release of Destiny it's very likely these forums will transubstantiate a great population influx.
In my experience the forums were properly moderated during the Halo times, but only decently during their latest installment: the Reach days. The reason to it is ofcourse the large amount of community members and the only fair amount of moderators.
Also, it appears to me these moderators only operate on different, non-overlaying time zones.
I suggest looking into this in order to moderate the forums more properly in future years. My suggestions are:
1) Expanding the team with more forum moderators.
2) Hiring forum moderators in different time-zones to steady and overlay moderating in general.
I'm sure there are enough capable people eagerly awaiting to amplify the team. This will result in a more fairly moderated community since a lot of offenses were and still are overlooked.

Maybe a couple more. Why not? :-)

I can't wait :)

We have enough moderators at the moment. What we need is for members to take charge and lend the new members a hand by guiding them.
Posted by: Spartan1065 Say someone thinks that I am incredibly annoying and they decide to block me but I actually make a really good thread with a lot of discussion value and people in their private groups are discussing it. They will have to choose between being annoyed and being left out of conversations with people they do like interacting with. After a while of being removed from good conversations I think that users would decide it is better to put up with slight annoyances and stop using the feature.
That example is completely unfair of you to make. If someone blocks you because what you're posting annoys them, they're probably not going to see your "really good thread" as a really good thread. I also remember back when the Bungie Favorites were removed for Reach in favour of filtering user-generated content, Achronos said something that really stuck. Paraphrasing.
From each user's perspective, most content is not worth looking at - it is terrible. Each user also thinks their own content is not terrible and therefore should receive more exposure.
I really think that is where your (and others') argument(s) stem from; you just don't like the idea of someone else thinking your posts aren't worth reading and not getting the attention you think they deserve. And we see this already happening all the time when people do things like bumping their topics, quoting their own posts, and so on (which made it a huge problem in the files forums). Why else would they do it? The other point to address would be the "fragmenting" which Hylebos brought up earlier. I don't disagree this won't happen, but I disagree that it would "fragment" the community to such an extent that significant discussion value or participation is lost (which some of you seem to be implying), simply because I cannot imagine users immediately and liberally clicking a block button on anything and everything they disagree with. I don't think it's a stretch to say people would much rather get into/can tolerate participating in a discussion, heated argument, or a name-calling match than to immediately block someone - people here are generally pretty thick-skinned. I think the vast majority majority of time it would be used where what someone has posted would be against the rules anyway. Of course, we could now get into a more interesting discussion of why moderators should/shouldn't be the only users to interpret what spam is.

I'm aware of 6 or 7 different moderators. If Bungie does decide to upgrade their staff, I hope they pick well. [Edited on 12.13.2012 8:45 PM PST]

We either have enough ninjas to handle the incoming traffic or Bungie will appoint more as they are needed, not before.
Posted by: Bricypoo I think everyone who is a Legendary member should become a Forum ninja.
That'd work well.

I don't think the initial influx will be huge. But I guess we'll just have to wait and see. I'm definitely looking forward to it though.
Posted by: ARBITOR 5 So, this is a 'I want become guyto ban people' thread?
My exact thoughts. The number of moderators we currently have wielding banhammers is plenty. Just because you don't see them posting doesn't mean they aren't there.
Posted by: dazarobbo Moderators being unavailable was one of the things I brought up in the topic about an ignore feature a while back. Isn't that something more preferable?
I remember that thread. If you had a link to it I would post my response to that feature, but I'll just explain it less eloquently than I did in that thread now. While many users would initially use the feature to block users that annoyed them they would miss out on significant parts of discussion in threads if people were to quote and respond to them. Even a broken clock is right twice a day and so is an annoying user and people will want to discus those correct viewpoints. Say someone thinks that I am incredibly annoying and they decide to block me but I actually make a really good thread with a lot of discussion value and people in their private groups are discussing it. They will have to choose between being annoyed and being left out of conversations with people they do like interacting with. I think that the solution is to chain the current moderators to the Internet and shoot caffeine directly into their eyes.

I think that we should wait and see if we need more moderators before we start talking about hiring more of them.

I'm sure the Web Team will take your expert insight in the world of forum moderation into consideration. ©

Instead of making more mods to ban more individuals...why not give the mods we have buttons of mass destruction, that ban lots of ppl at once?
-
I think we have a decent amount of mods to bully us! Joking I love you mods, don't ban me! :9
Posted by: roman arrow12 Every single person on this website is a moderator. If you use the report tool, bad threads/posts get dealt with pretty quickly.
Agreed... I think the moderators are great and can handle it. But I'm sure Bungie knows what to do if things get crazy for the current moderators.
