Posted by: Sgt monkey41 It's more of a southern thing. My mom grew up calling her dad Sir and still does it to this very day.
Military families also. I say it, and I was raised in Chicago with a father in the Airforce.
-
Because it's showing you're a respectful person. You're dumb for not saying Sir and Ma'am.

Culture. It's a sign of respect, at least here in Texas.
-
I ussally say Mr. Soandso and Miss Soandso
-
Societal norms and all that -blam!-.
-
I don't. I call them Mr., or Mrs. whatever, unless they tell me to call them by their first name. Anyway its a politeness thing, maybe people are less formal where you come from, but that's how it is in America, at least with people you want to give a good impression too.

I realize it's probably a culture thing, but I want to know exactly.

Here in Aus I usually call them by their name, or call them mate.
-
What do they do wherever you're from, OP?

I'm sorry for acting so stupid sir.
-
I call them by their name, not sir or mam. If they don't like it, tough luck, because I'm -blam!-en their daughter already and don't care how they view me.
Posted by: MashterChief117 it makes you look stupid as -blam!-
I really cannot see how it makes them look stupid. It's polite if anything.
-
Better to be considered stupid than it is to be considered disrespectful.

It's respectful and makes their parents think their son/daughter isn't dating/hanging out with a rude -blam!-.
