How much has the combat in Halo really 'evolved' since Halo 1?

Personally, I believe the horse and carriage were overrated. Sure, it was a good form of transportation back then, but now, it seems very slow compared to most cars now.

Reach was decent, as is Halo 4 (fixed some of Reach's problems, but also created a bunch of new ones so consider these two to be equal). CE was incredibly boring. For its time, it was awesome, but it's extremely generic now with very linear gameplay.

It has remained with the basic concepts as the start, but basically think of it as continuously being upgraded.
