Microsoft has announced that the Halo series has moved 50 million since its inception in 2001. It has also been confirmed by 343 Industries that the next titles in the series is also in early stages of development.
The seven games in the series sold 46 million units before the launch of Halo 4 in November 2012 (via Gamespot) meaning Halo 4 has sold around 4 million copies. The game earned $220 million during its first 24 hours at retail.
As far as a new Halo title is concerned, 343 Industries Frank OConnor has told CVG the team is currently prototyping ideas, software, and art. Microsoft has said previously a second trilogy in the Halo will be released.
I cannot say more than that but work on the game started actually before we launched Halo 4 and continues apace as we cycle staff through the team vacation breaks, he said. We are excited about the next game.
OConnor also said a second season for Halo 4 Spartan Ops is still up in the air, as the team is looking at how the first season does, before deciding.

Thoughts on this?

I am really hoping that Halo 5 will be for the next gen Xbox and not the 360.
-
I don't see what the big deal is. I would rather have a company begin developing a game earlier than rushing it in a smaller window of time. It's not like Bungie didn't do this, too...
-
You guys, realize Bungie did this too. Games take years to make, so they'd best start now. Much of 343 would end up sitting around if they waited.

Of course the next one is being made. That has always been the case with Halo. Halo Reach and ODST were both started about the same time and no one was upset about that.

I just hope they don't make a right pig's ear of it like they did with Halo 4.

Right?
Yes. What part of "prototyping ideas, software, and art" is causing you confusion?
Woah hold your horses, I just haven't read it all.
It wasn't that long of a post.
I know, but I'm doing scrolling these parts as I'm helping my family.

I just love how people jump to random, pointless conclusions. Halo 3 was being worked on before Halo 2 was released, it's always been done this way. There's no way that giving 343i more time to work on the game could make it worse.
Posted by: xSapphire
Posted by: Dreadnough7
Posted by: xSapphire I thought Microsoft already said that they were trying to make Halo a yearly release.
Source?
Here. They definitely want to, but 343 is digging in its heels.
The article states that they want to pace faster the release of new games, but nowhere it says that it'll become annual releases. Such a pace is unsustainable with Halo.

Already new that Halo 5 was in the works. But still cool.
-
Posted by: mvyorkie009 its already being started??? wow not only does the game play like cod it is going to be produced like cod. yorkie
...its a company...they finish a game, and then they start making another one. This is how the world works. COD didn't invent this.
Posted by: Nephilim713 It will not be yearly release clearly. Halo always has much more variety.
"It won't be yearly release. That wouldn't work well with us or Halo." --Frank O'Connor, a year ago. The fact that Halo 5 is in development already should surprise no one. Hell, ODST and Reach were in development alongside each other, and I'm sure Halo 3 was in pre-production towards the end of Halo 2's cycle. It's just the most efficient way of doing things.
Posted by: Noshotskill Well nowadays, most sequels in a big series begin development before the first game is released. Its not surprising that Halo 5 is already in the initial stages of development, especially considering how large 343i's team is. As for Spartan Ops season 2... I doubt it will be released, because the only replayability comes with players who want the fastest experience.
i would like to see a season 2 of spartan ops, i want to see more of the story
