What happened to "Not another Sci-fi"?

Of course it's more than likely that some press event was released by bungie that confirmed their overall intentions for their new ip, but what the crap happened to the giant romp about it being a HUGE step AWAY from ANYTHING pertaining to the Halo franchise? Like, How their next game wouldn't be a Science Fiction game at all, but something completely different with RPG elements? Please don't get me wrong, this "Peek at Destiny" looks Frakin Gorgeous, I'm just as Boner-Blitzed as the next guy for Bungies next Awesomocity, but still, It's like they fell off the the freakin planet for two years, and then "WOOPS! LEAKS! SCI-FI! And look! Mysterious alien object floating over the last of humanity!" (Granted that RPG elements can fit right into this premise...) but still... Am I alone? Or was anybody else just as surprised about all this as I was?

 • Just like any other genre, "sci-fi" is an incredibly broad and inclusive term that can hold together massive amounts of diverse works under one convenient banner. 2001 and Looper could both be considered sci-fi easily, and yet I hardly see any similarities between those two movies.

 • Why are you complaining? Sci-fi is pretty much a genre where you can do absolutely anything you want (making a game, that is).

 • I'm curious to see if they take Sci-Fi in an interesting direction, as far as branching out into some fantasy elements with the "Knights". Though I suppose your view on that will depend on whether or not you consider Sci-Fi as a sub-genre of fantasy or as its own unique genre. [Edited on 12.04.2012 7:57 PM PST]

 • I kind of understand this desire to see Bungie do something different, but at the same time, Bungie does science fiction so well that I cannot possibly complain. They are masters at using the science fiction element to mysticize their worlds and characters--a quality I don't see done well very often.

 • Bungie never said that their game will be a huge step away from Halo. The only things they said about Destiny were that it is not WoW in space and some vague hints like "Wouldn't it be cool if there was a world that is always there for you" or something or "At some point it is going to be more the players' game than ours".

 • Destiny has been confirmed to be a Sci-Fi game ever since that contract with Activision and Bungie was leaked.

 •
Posted by: ParkerMan22 (Granted that RPG elements can fit right into this premise...)
Pretty sure RPG elements can fit right into any premise and that this one is no better than any other, but I don't see why that would be very important because there really hasn't been any indication that there will be RPG elements in this game... • If I remember right, one of the earliest confirmed facts about Destiny was that it would be sci-fi. Shoot, in the ODST easter egg, "Destiny Awaits" it pretty much confirmed that Destiny would be a science fiction title. And who's complaining? Bungie is one of the only companies to venture 500 - 700 years into the future.

 • I do not recall them saying anything about the new game not being a sic-if game.

 • I would like to know where people got this information from about Bungie and them apparently not doing another sci-fi game.

 • They never said they were doing something completely different; they said that they weren't making Halo anymore. The sci-fi genre is quite diverse and they can still, within the sci-fi genre, create a universe very different than that of Halo or Marathon. [Edited on 12.02.2012 10:24 PM PST]
