Assassin's Creed III Discussion *Spoilers*

***SPOILER ALERT*** I just beat the game. What. The. Hell. Was. That. After 5 goddamn games, you're told that everything you've done for the past few centuries was irrelevant, and then you just hand the keys to the planet over to a megalomaniac. And then you are unceremoniously killed. Cut to credits. What the actual hell. The ending of this game is downright nihilistic and just goddamn depressing. It's message is that Humanity is fundamentally too flawed to ever be anything more than a band of warring, ignorant animals, that we're destined to either never mature as a species, or die out, and that our only salvation is through becoming slaves to 'higher' beings. Screw that. That's the exact opposite of the message these games have been carrying this whole time. It basically takes the last 2 minutes of the entire series to say "Oh yeah... all that freedom stuff you were going on about this whole time? Yeah, that's all bull. Kthxbye." I don't know what the developers were aiming for, but it just comes off as a giant middle finger to the fans from where I'm sitting...

  • Wasn't that bad....other than the big slap in the face for Desmond's story. Still, kinda sets up what they plan to do for Assassin's Creed 4, kill Juno.

  •
Posted by: Ric_Adbur I suppose. Maybe I just find it off-putting because it was all so abrupt and didn't seem all that climactic for having taken 5 games to reach it. In the end, all you see is a little chat with 2 of the glowy ghosts you've already been seeing since AC2, and then he touches an orb and falls over. The end. :/
There was a build-up during the cutscene sequences when you placed the keys. But I have to agree that present-day should be far more developed. We know they can do it; The stories of Altair, Ezio and Connor are absolutely magnificent. The stories of Assassin's and Templars are too. It's just this thing of "ancient civilizations" that was introduced in AC2 that lacks depth.

I thought he died at the end of brotherhood myself.
Desmond's body was charred and smoking. It's hard to tell with a youtube video. In revelations he puts his mind back together and wakes up.
Eh maybe juno was fixing his face. He looked so ugly in AC 3 its unbelievable. I thought after 3 desmond would become a master assassin and work on beating abstergo and then ff decades later desmond has the assassins back up to full strength.

  •
Posted by: ABotelho
Posted by: Ric_Adbur
Posted by: ABotelho Juno is basically a Templar, while Minerva is basically an Assassin, in terms of mindset.
Which is one of the main reasons the ending sucks. Why would Desmond suddenly decide to go with the templar way at the end?
As Minerva explained, it was destruction or POSSIBLE enslaving. He has left defeating Juno to others. Juno was a clever -blam!-. She made Connor hide the key "some place nobody could ever find it", so that the process of activating temple would be delayed centuries; which made it too late for Desmond, as Minerva pointed out. And as for not touching the orb, the cycle of life would have simply repeated itself, and within a few more thousand years, they'd be repeating themselves. That part was actually a criticism of religion, of the big themes of Assassin's Creed.
I suppose. Maybe I just find it off-putting because it was all so abrupt and didn't seem all that climactic for having taken 5 games to reach it. In the end, all you see is a little chat with 2 of the glowy ghosts you've already been seeing since AC2, and then he touches an orb and falls over. The end. :/ But I did like that part detailing what would happen if they let the world burn and restarted, and how the cycles would repeat and the Assassin's Creed would become distorted over the generations and be used as an excuse to perpetrate actions contrary to it's intent. • Well Ive ruined the ending and spoiled for myself. Its okay its my own damn fault for not staying away from the thread. But guys assassins creed 3 was still a damn great game and connor was way better than ezio in my humble opinion, mostly because hes more serious, cold and stoic than ezio. But the dude was awkward at times. And the gameplay is great. I love the frontier and ship combat. But maybe desmond just went into some kind of coma? I thought he died at the end of brotherhood myself.

  • No all the stuff in colonial America was fine. I always knew that story wasn't going to have a super happy ending. That's just history, and I respect Ubisoft for not sugar coating it. My problem lies entirely with the modern-day ending. It was extremely unfulfilling, and didn't really seem in keeping with the overall theme of the games. [Edited on 11.18.2012 8:43 PM PST]

  • I don't even give a damn about desmonds story or the whole animus thing. And yes, it was depressing that the tribe moved away. Or were you depressed about desmond dying?

  • I found the ending least offensive, mostly because I stopped caring what happened outside the Animus after the first game. The entire game leading up to the ending is what offends me.

If he sided with Minerva society would've ended up in basically the same place. [Edited on 11.18.2012 6:54 PM PST]

  •
Posted by: Lightning Yuna
Posted by: ABotelho I still think the next games should only focus on the past. Connor's story was so much better. In fact, the stories of the past are so much more developed and interesting.
I agree. But sadly that doesnt seem like a possibility. You know, because the assassins and maybe even the templars must find a way to stop Juno from being a -blam!-.
But what to the Templars seek? Peace through order. That's what Juno would bring. Juno is basically a Templar, while Minerva is basically an Assassin, in terms of mindset.

  • The ending is very hard to swallow, but I don't think it's bad. I mean, Assassin's Creed has always had religion looming around. I don't see why a depressing ending automatically means it should be a bad one. Isn't that what everybody has been wanting? An ending that isn't so happy? I mean, it does make sense. Minerva is basically an assassin, and Juno is basically a Templar. Nevertheless, I still think the next games should only focus on the past. Connor's story was so much better. In fact, the stories of the past are so much more developed and interesting. [Edited on 11.18.2012 6:16 PM PST]

  • AC3 is the last game? I assumed that the game would continue, but you would play a different character who's job is to stop Juno.

  •
Posted by: Raptorx7 Assassins Creed went down hill after 2.
I agree, but other than the last 2 minutes (and a few quirks here and there), AC3 is a really good game. It's actually very similar to Mass Effect 3 in that the entire game is very good and all seems to be leading up to something, and then the ending completely fails to deliver. Only - unlike with ME3 - AC3's ending isn't comprised of plot holes and -blam!- writing. It's just really goddamn depressing.

One of the biggest questions that I was left asking at the end of both Mac Walters 3 and AC3 was if everything is truly a cycle, doesn't that mean we'll eventually end up at the point that we're at right now, regardless of your actions?
