Does Bungie have to pay for each avatar and profile background?

I'm surprised that there isn't a busy avatar community filling the avatar selection with new coolness as well as hundreds of high-quality avatars coming in every month! In fact, the rate at which new avatars are added makes me consider whether Bungie actually has to pay to have avatars or not, like trademark logos. On that note, what do you think of the quality of the avatars available? There's some terribly cropped ones from years ago, but back then Bungie's 'avatar-makers' had an excuse. There's some that you could put together in 2 minutes. There's plenty of variation at the moment from each Halo game, but quite a few lack a respectable composition and colour palette. You could say that Bungie is busy right now. Can you guess who isn't? Us. I'd very much enjoy creating avatars, and I've no doubt that we'll have more thrown at us in future. But what would you say to a monthly or trimonthly avatar competition? I'm quite the avatar fanatic and I can't settle on the same avatar for more than 2 days so they really matter to me as do the profile backgrounds. You could argue with "Coup", but that's a terrible argument. We shouldn't have to install a browser extension for more avatars. That's my say, I want yours.

  • Assuming they would all have to be approved by Bungie Staff, I'm down.

  • I'd love to make some avatars if we had the chance to.

  • This could be fun. It would almost be like mail sack competitions, just larger scale.

  • It'd be tight to make our own and share them.

  • It would be good, but I won't be changing mine.

I think a competition like this could be fun. Didn't we do something like this for the All Stars challenges? [Edited on 11.15.2012 4:21 PM PST]

  • Throughout the year, DeeJ hosted a thread in the Gallery Forum for community members to submit new avatars for bungie.net This lasted up until about Bungie Day this year. Feel free to have a peek around at those ones. As for right now, soon.

  • I agree with the simplicity and ease in creating a lot of the avatars, but that's justified because (IMO) a lot of the avatars here focus less about visual quality and more about actual meaning; characters and creations that some of us have grown up with through the years. One of the problems in making new avatars at this point is there's almost no topic for making them that hasn't been done to death already, especially when the topic is "The Bungie Community" (in the case of that thread...I mean, have you looked through it?) You could say though that we'd be going through a "flashback" phase and revisiting old Bungie games and making avatars from those games that haven't been done yet (I know for sure there's still some unused material for some funny and awesome avatars from Marathon and Oni) but to be honest I'd rather look forward than back. We should wait and see what happens with Bungie and their new chapter of games. (Coup sucks)
