Jackal Subspecies

Alright, so with the introduction of Skirmishers in Reach, it's been pretty much confirmed that there are subspecies of Jackals. Which makes sense since they have colonies on the various other moons around Eayn. However on Waypoint it says:
Easily the most common among the current Kig-Yar population, Storm Jackals represent the tip of the spear of the Covenant military body. Despite being lightly armored, this role is equipped with personal energy shields which provide resilient yet versatile cover whenever needed. Storm Jackals, as indicated by their name, are generally deployed in 'storm' or assault formations alongside other troops, though they can be splintered off into groups for other specialized roles.
If "Storm" Jackals are the most common of the population, why didn't the Covenant use them for canon fodder like the Grunts? Why were their less common brethren used? Is there a canon reason for this, or did 343i just mess up?

 • Well I think Halopedia is just making an assumption there to be honest. Seems like this is the "re-imagined" Jackal. However given that I despise most of these designs I do prefer the idea that it is a subspecies. I think the meaning of the word "current" in the context is important. The current Storm Jackal population? Or the current overall Jackal population? I hope it's the former. It means that I can dodge having to accept most of these generic re-designs as being the new standard that replace carefully designed and iconic art, and it means by corollary that the Storm Covenant isn't a new Covenant altogether. In this case, maybe the Storm recruited the help of a Jackal colony that is mostly inhabited by these, but that they also have a very small minority of Skirmishers and main trilogy Jackals too that we do not see. I really don't know though.

 •
Posted by: Wikked Navajoe I think it is because it says "among the current population...". Maybe this is referring to after the firing of Halo?
The Covenant was formed after the Halo Array fired as well. So why weren't THESE jackals used more often? Why use less common jackals?

 • I may be jumping to conclusions but these two seem to point in that direction. There's Halo Nation...
The Storm Jackal is a species of Jackal that will make its first appearance in Halo 4. Not much is know but they are expected to be stronger and may be a different rank to the normal Jackals. They look much more reptilian.
And the much more reliable Halopedia...
A third head morphology seems common to Jackals in the Covenant remnant, 2557; these Jackals have the same body structure as most of their kin, but their heads are far more muscular and reptilian than even those of the Skirmishers.[11] These Jackals also differ from the more commonly-seen variety in having reddish plumes and yellow-tinted eyes. Whether this is a natural or artificial variation is unknown; the faction also consists of Unggoy that display similarly abnormal morphology.
• Firstly, where was it stated that this is a sub-species?
