|OT| and Bungie.net

So I like many people, frequent the NeoGAF forums. They have a system or, "Member Etiquette", which stops people from posting the same thread over and over again. They have "|OT|" threads, "|OT|" meaning 'Official Thread'. These are threads that keep all discussion for said topic in the one place. Take the Halo 4 threads in The Flood as an example. There are many threads about the same thing. Now, if we had one "official" thread for this topic, it would keep the forums from having the same threads created over and over again and it would also keep the discussion in the one place where it can flow and people can discuss. We kind of already have something like this in Durado's Title Thread. Now, obviously |OT| threads would only be used for major topics such as major games, events and maybe even news. So what would make a thread "official"? Like on the GAF, the |OT| would have to contain relevant information to help people learn about said topic and would have to be structured in a particular way. It can't just be someone saying "Guys, this is the official thread! Post here!" Just a thought. I personally don't really have a stand on whether a |OT| system would benefit Bungie.net. Just thought it might be interesting to discuss. Lastly, If you're against this idea, can you think of any other substitute which might see the decline in repeat topics? I think the community already does a good job of making "natural" megathreads. I recall seeing some pretty lengthy threads in the Reach forums and they got that way because the OPs made well structured and detailed threads. When others would make smaller and frankly lazier threads, people would link the other thread. How would we determine who makes the |OT|? People, by nature, will want their thread to be the megathread. I think it'd result in a lot of bruised egos and crying, much like the poll situation that people on this board want to (surprise surprise) set restrictions on. I love that this board is always trying to find ways to make this site better. I just don't think restricting discussion is the best way to go about it.

  • Having the exact same thread made multiple times can be annoying but only if you're active enough to notice both of the threads. But I like having new threads. It seems easier to have discussion about, say, Halo 4 vehicles in a thread titled "New Halo 4 vehicles News" with only a page or two of replies than it would to in a thread titled "|OT| Halo 4 thread" with thousands of replies. With only a couple of pages, new people entering the thread will generally read through most or all of the current replies before posting. That doesn't happen when there is already thousands of posts - so many get ignored.

  •
Posted by: True Underdog B.net is also structured differently than GAF. Even they have to watch out with too many megathreads. Halo 4 is a hot topic to discuss right now. It's the exact same with Skyrim (which has died down), Mass Effect (which has died down), CoD (which has died down for now), rock vs rap, ponies, and Justin Bieber (which have all died down except when someone is trying to get a rise out of people). Internet's gonna internet.
I agree, most topics die down over time. I was just thinking; having the one thread would cut down the on the same thread being made over again. So e.g. Halo OT, Skyrim OT, Walking Dead OT... you know how the GAF works. I know over time, most topics do die down (the topics you listed be classic examples). But why not have a central thread to discuss these topics? I personally don't really have a stand on whether a |OT| system would benefit Bungie.net. Just thought it might be interesting to discuss.

I don't get why this board is so hung up on restricting what people can do on this website. Admittedly, I've become more lax over the last two years but that's more to do with my interpretation of the rules and letting things slide as long as they aren't malicious but I don't think I've ever advocated restrictions just for te sake of restricting something. Internet's gonna internet. [Edited on 10.09.2012 5:19 AM PDT]

  •
Posted by: GrandmasterNinja I think then we'd need an OT thread for every single kind of idea. And games like Halo have A TON of things to talk about in a thread. What if the topic of the thread is the armor, weapons, vehicles, campaign, multiplayer... And then there are the aformention threads for improvements that they wish were implemented in the game. So I think it's best not to make OT threads to be honest. The titles thread was made, so that people don't spam the forums with CAN I HAZ MYTHIX pl0x?! Like the recon helmet effect.
I'm going to be the devils advocate here. Couldn't this all be discussed in the one thread? Of course there could be exceptions for major news or features. Also, using the GAF as an example again, when a thread reaches a certain point they lock the thread and make a new, updated OP. This could help refresh the topic. I understand why the Title Thread was made and how it kind of became the OT for titles. But couldn't the same thing be done for topics such as Halo 4?

  • A new forum for game discussion would come in useful for this. A new forum could have a Halo thread, a Borderlands thread, a COD thread, a GOW thread ect.
