I swear, its like they don't want us to learn and get an education. I lived in California for the past 4-5 years, and while I went to one of the top 500 schools in the country (Adolfo Camarillo HS), when I moved to Virginia, I felt completely unprepared for it as the HS im going to is like one of the top 100 schools. Im not blaming it entirely on the school system, part of my un-prepardeness is my fault, I'll freely admit that, but my question still stands, why does it get cut first?

Because Americans don't value education.
-
Because it's the longest string.

Lol California Schools.

Isn't California 49th in education? That might be the problem. North Carolina is 48th.

With a state the size of california, i don't think crappy schools are much of a surprise.
-
Because military is more important to the US government. The education is already terrible, there's no reason not to make it worse.
-
It may be because you went from the most liberal state and thus the highest taxes, to a more conservative state with less taxes. Here in Florida, there's hardly any money in the education system. The teachers have to pay to print papers for us. And yet, I'm still learning a lot. It depends on the quality of the teachers, I think.

Smarter people = more questions = the less the government can get away with.

You think that's bad? I live in Washington State, and my school can barely afford paper!
Posted by: DeclinedA1 It may be because you went from the most liberal state and thus the highest taxes, to a more conservative state with less taxes.
You'd be amazed at how little money actually goes to education. Our property taxes pay for education, but in the late 70's we passed Proposition 13, which prohibited the increase of property taxes. Basically, we shot ourselves in the foot. Well California schools are dumbed down because... of the people that live there.
-
They want to make money with charter schools and hurt the black and Latino communities.
